GEORGE BRETT
George Brett was "The Franchise" for the Kansas City Royals during most of their first twenty-five years of existence. A line-drive hitting menace, he seriously challenged the coveted .400 batting mark in 1980, and collected more than 3,000 hits in his career. He was one of the greatest post-season performers in baseball history and the first Royal inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Nicknames
Brett never earned a real popular nickname. His teammates called him "Mullet" early in his career. If you see any of his early baseball cards you'll see the unfortunate reason why.

GEORGE SISLER
George Sisler never played on a pennant winner and he wasn't a slugger, but in spite of that he earned a reputation as the best first baseman in the first 30 years of the 20th century. The greatest player in St. Louis Browns' history, he twice batted over .400, and his 257 hits in 1920 remain a modern major league record. That same year, the lefty-swinging Sisler hit in 41 consecutive games, an American League record that stood until surpassed by Joe DiMaggio. Sisler, who attended the University of Michigan, where he played for Branch Rickey, was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1939.

Baseball Almanac "I could have played another year, but I would have been playing for the money, and baseball deserves better than that." - George Brett B aseball Almanac is pleased to present an unprecedented collection of baseball related quotations spoken by George Brett and about George Brett. George Brett Quotations From George Brett "A woman will be elected President before Wade Boggs is called out on strikes. I guarantee that." "He ( Jamie Quirk ) looks like a greyhound, but he runs like a bus." "He said I couldn't do (off the field) what I did when I was 23 or 24, and I paid attention to him. Damn it, I got a trainer and went to spring training in the best shape of my career and in 1985 had the best season I ever had and we won the World Series. Before that, I didn't know how long I was going to play. That talk with Mr. Fogelman was the most inspiring talk I ever had with anyone." "I could have played another year, but I would have been playing for the money, and baseball deserves better than that."

Career Batting Record One of the biggest stories of the 1980 baseball season was Brett's drive to become the first player to bat .400 since Ted Williams in 1941. He was over the mark going into September, but a thumb injury hampered his swing and he fell 5 hits short, ending with a .390 average, still the best for a major league hitter since Williams' feat. Brett won the AL's most valuable player award that season, when he also had 24 home runs and 118 RBI. A left-handed hitter, Brett joined the Kansas City Royals briefly in 1973 and took over the third base job the following season. In 1975, he led the league with 195 hits and 13 triples. The following year, he won his first batting title with a .333 average and again led with 215 hits and 14 triples. Brett hit 45 doubles in 1978 to lead the league. In 1979, he was the league leader in hits and triples for a third time, with 212 and 20, respectively. After his great 1980 season, a leg injury limited him to 89 games in 1981. Although not known for his speed, Brett stole 103 bases from 1975 through 1980, but the injury slowed him and cut down his defensive range. From 1986 on, he was used primarily at first base and as a designated hitter.

For the World War II general by that name, see: George Howard Brett (military) George Howard Brett (born May 15 in Glen Dale, West Virginia ) is a former American baseball player. He is one of the greatest third basemen in Major League Baseball history and the only man to ever win batting titles in three different decades. Brett was the youngest child of a sports-minded family which included his older brother Ken , a major-league pitcher. His family moved to the midwest and later to southern California when he was a boy, and Brett grew up hoping to follow in his brother's footsteps as a big-league baseball player. He was drafted by the fledgling Kansas City Royals in the second round of the baseball draft. Brett began his professional career as a shortstop , but had trouble going to his right defensively and was soon shifted to third base. As a third baseman, his powerful arm remained an asset, and he remained at that spot for 15 years. The Royals promoted him to the major leagues on

George's Bio Kansas City Royals Kansas City Star Email Us! George Brett He was already the only player to win batting titles in three different decades, a thirteen-time All-Star, and the last modern player to make a serious run at hitting .400. The younger brother of pitcher Ken Brett, he led the league in hits and triples in 1975, repeated in both categories in 1976, and added his first batting title that year, hitting .333 to edge Rod Carew and teammate Hal McRae, later his manager. From 1976 to 1978 the Royals lost three straight playoffs to the Yankees despite Brett's three-run homer in 1976 and his three consecutive homers off Catfish Hunter in 1978. Just before the All-Star break in 1980 Brett was hitting .337 when he strained ankle ligaments trying to steal a base; however, he got hot in July and even hotter in August, going 4-for-4 on the 17th to reach the magic figure of .400. With two weeks left, he slumped but finished strong (10-for-19), ending the season at .390; he also led the league in slugging (.664) and, to absolutely no one's surprise, was named MVP. That year, the Royals broke the playoff jinx against the Yankees as Brett homered in Game One and hit an upper deck home run off Goose Gossage to win Game Three. Although the Phils beat KC in a six-game Series, Brett homered and went 9-for-24 in the Series. The Royals finally won a championship in 1985 as Brett starred offensively and defensively; he went 4-for-5 in Game Seven, robbed the Cardinals of five potential hits and went 10-for-27, scoring five runs.
