HOME TICKETS SCHEDULE PLAYERS ... TEAM HISTORY Cleveland Indians Baseball History Cleveland Indians, professional baseball team and one of five teams in the Central Division of the American League (AL). Formerly called the Blues, the Bronchos, and the Naps, the club’s current name was suggested by a fan in 1914 to honor Louis Sockalexis. Sockalexis was a member of the National League’s Cleveland Spiders during the late 1890s and the first Native American to play professional baseball. The Indians play at Jacobs Field in Cleveland, Ohio, and wear uniforms of white, red, and black.
Many legendary figures have played for the Indians, including Stan Coveleski, Bob Feller, Nap Lajoie, Bob Lemon, Satchel Paige, Gaylord Perry, Frank Robinson, Tris Speaker, and Cy Young. The club won the World Series in 1920 and 1948. With 111 wins and only 43 losses in 1954, the team put together one of the best single-season records in history.
During the 1990s Cleveland won five consecutive division titles (1995-1999). The Indians captured the AL pennant and advanced to the World Series in 1995 and 1997. The club lost both World Series, the first to the Atlanta Braves and the second to the Florida Marlins.

We Get Stacks and Stacks
by Mike Carminati We Get Stacks and Stacks of Letters, Letters! Reader Jeff Mayne (no relation to Brent) queries: Hi, I was persusing the internet looking for something and came on your site (and spent quite a few enjoyable minutes reading your comments instead of getting back to work. From your site, you sound like just the kind of person who can head me in the right direction to find out some obscure baseball numbers. Here they are. Maybe they will inspire you to look into them or maybe clue me in on some internet sites where I may find these things. 2. I have been tracking Bonds this year and notice that he has ALMOST always gotten either a hit, a walk, or a HBP in games he has started (missing maybe 3-4 so far). Does anyone have records of % of games on base? Hope some of these inspire you.

NINE: A Journal of Baseball History and Culture - Volume 11, Number 2, Spring 2003, pp. 27-35

Excerpt
For some time now, modern (post-1975) Major League baseball players have labored under the stigma of being viewed as disloyal to their teams. Players, so goes the argument, have callously abandoned their ties to the teams and cities that gave them their start and their fame. They've done so because they're preoccupied with chasing the big money, which might lure them elsewhere. In other words, today's player places greed over loyalty. This perception illustrates, in the minds of the critics, another way that free agency has ruined the game for the fans, whom players routinely abandon no matter how strong the hometown support. Although popular among fans, owners, and sportswriters, this view amounts to a rather odd argument. Even if players did totally control the hiring process, how would their behavior differ from any other professional? Indeed, we would think it strange for a corporate executive, for example, to turn down a better job at another firm, in another city, merely because it would show disloyalty to the executive's current company. Perhaps loyalty should be more important, but why impose the standard merely on ballplayers?
