I was expecting a well-written chronological biography of Barry Bonds and that is most definitely not what this book is. While the material may have been all right, the book is atrociously written and a labor to get through. The author, Steven Travers, is a former sports columnist for the San Francisco Examiner. He was also a minor league baseball player, who graduated from the University of Southern California and attended law school. Unfortunately, in my opinion, his impressive background does not make him a good writer.
This has got to be the most poorly written book that I have ever attempted to read; it is so bad that it obscures any good content that the book may have had and unfortunately, in my opinion, it is not worth the paper it was printed on.
If you still really want to buy this book, I would recommend therapy, but you can

Barry Bonds: The Baseball Superstar the Media Love To Hate
by Burton S. Blumert When a prominent athlete hits the front page these days, it’s usually a sordid tale involving murder and mayhem. One athlete savagely dismembers his wife, another sullen footballer hires an amoral thug to murder a pregnant girlfriend, and on Super Bowl weekend in Atlanta, an NFL poster boy takes part in a bloody confrontation that leaves two dead. It was very different when the San Francisco Chronicle featured baseball star Barry Bonds on their front page on June 1, 2001. But the only violence in this story was Barry Bonds bruising baseballs during his record-breaking barrage of home runs in the month of May. Bonds, in his sixteenth year in the major leagues as a superstar, was never identified as a home run slugger in the mold of the great Babe or modern bashers like Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa. In his early years, Bonds was a lithe figure, emphasizing speed and defensive skills. When Bonds struck his 500 th career home run earlier this season, the baseball establishment seemed surprised. How had this interloper entered the legendary domain inhabited by only seventeen baseball immortals? The event was well covered by the media, but Bonds membership in the exclusive 500-career home run club seemed more honorary than earned.

'Steroids, Steroids,' The Hateful Chorus Chants by Burton S. Blumert
Memo to Editor Rockwell and other baseball fans: Let me shift your attention for a moment from the Red Sox vs. the Yankees, the finest teams money can buy, to the Left Coast and the incomparable Barry Bonds. Let me bring you up to date. For the first 20 games of the 2004 Season Bonds:
  • Leads the league in batting: .500 Leads the league in HR: 9 Leads the league in Bases on Balls: 30 (this statistic is ominous)
These astonishing numbers are consistent with Barry’s shattering of records the past three seasons. Here are those highlights:
  • In 2001 Bonds hit 73 Home Runs (a record that will NEVER be broken) He won the League’s Most Valuable Player Award (MVP) In 2002 Barry won the Batting Title by hitting a glittering .370 During the World Series, he batted .471, hit 4 HR and was walked 13 times.

Career Hitting Record The son of former major-leaguer Bobby Bonds , Barry was an All-American outfielder at Arizona State University and was chosen in the first round of the 1985 free-agent draft by the NL's Pittsburgh Pirates. He played just 115 games in the minor leagues before being called up during the 1986 season. Within a short time, Bonds was being touted as the next great super-star, a rare combination of hitting ability, power, speed, and defensive skill. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Bonds, who is left-handed, batted only .223 as a rookie but hit 16 home runs and stole 36 bases in just 113 games. He was named the league's most valuable player in 1990, when he hit .301 with 33 home runs, 104 runs scored, 114 RBI, and 52 stolen bases. He also led the league's outfielders with 14 assists. Bonds won the award again in 1992. He had a .311 average that season, led the league in runs scored with 109 and in walks with 127, hit 34 home runs and 103 RBI, and stole 39 bases. Bonds went to the San Francisco Giants as a free agent in 1993 and had his best season to date, batting .336 with 46 home runs, 129 runs scored, 123 RBI, and 29 stolen bases, winning his third MVP award in four years.

Bonds was asked whether baseball fans would be able to side with the players, considering the average salary is now $2.4 million. "It's not my fault you don't play baseball," Bonds told The Post. "It's not our fault you're not an actor or Bill Gates or anybody else." Ultimately, Bonds believes baseball would survive another stoppage. "It's entertainment," he told The Post. "It will come back. A lot of companies go on strike, not just baseball. And people still ride the bus."

Legal battle enters extra innings
After an auction fetches $450,000 for Barry Bonds' homerun ball to be split by two fans vying for it in court, one now faces another legal battle with his own lawyer. With the proceeds netting less than half of the ball's estimated $1 million value, attorney for plaintiff Alex Popov obtained a temporary injunction to freeze his former client's $225,000 share of the profits to go towards a $473,530.32 legal bill.

Two baseball seasons, one fierce legal battle and hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees after Barry Bonds' record-setting 73rd home run in 2001, the baseball has finally landed in the hands of a single undisputed owner: Comic book creator and producer Todd McFarlane, who paid $450,000 in an auction that closed Wednesday.

Fans take the stand to describe melee over record-setting ball Though it looks like any other baseball, Barry Bonds' home run ball has been valued at more than $1 million. By Matt Bean
Court TV Barry Bonds' record-setting 73rd homerun disappeared into a mass of fans in the right field stands of Pacific Bell park on Oct. 7, 2001. But was it nestled in the glove of one man or free on the ground for another to grab? That's the question behind the trial pitting Alex Popov, who rose above the crowd that day and got a glove on the ball, against Patrick Hayashi, who claims he plucked the prized souvenir from the ground. On Friday, Popov's second witness, Contra Costa, Calif., dentist Douglas Yarris, told the judge deciding the case that he landed near Popov at the center of the scrum that ensued over the ball. Douglas Yarris witnessed the catch and the ensuing scuffle. Yarris, 44, brought his son, Travis, then 13, to the season-ending game. Like Popov, the dentist positioned himself on the walkway behind right field where Bonds was most likely to hit one out. When Bonds connected with Dodgers' pitcher Dennis Springer's pitch in the first inning, Yarris thought he had a chance to grab a piece of baseball history. "It was such a slow pitch," Yarris testified. "I thought it was coming right at me."

Barry Bonds salutes the cheering SBC crowd before the Giants' home opener Tuesday. Click photo for larger image. On the table Milestones and records for which Barry Bonds would fall just short if he never played again: No Milestone RBIs needed to tie Carl Yastrzemski for 10th all time (1,844) Multi-home run games needed to tie Babe Ruth for first all time (72) RBIs needed to tie Mel Ott for ninth all time (1,861) Home runs needed to tie Hank Aaron's 755 for No. 1 all time Runs needed to tie Pete Rose for fifth all time (2,165) Because we've conspired all these years trying to bring him down, the nation's baseball writers gave Barry Bonds another most valuable player plaque to drag around this week. We've done that seven times now. Replicas of his six other MVP awards were displayed in pre-game ceremonies Tuesday in San Francisco, their shiny totality emblematic of our 19-year mission to destroy one of the greatest hitters to play the game we love.
