Wade Boggs: A First-Ballot Hall of Famer (Part Two)
by Richard Lederer In Part One , I compared Wade Boggs to the first-ballot Hall of Fame honorees over the past decade to determine whether he was worthy of being selected on his initial attempt. I believe the answer was a resounding yes. Drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the seventh round of the 1976 amateur draft, Boggs toiled in the minors for six years Stuck behind Carney Lansford Ichiro Suzuki , .350 in 2001) and finished third in the 1982 A.L. ROY balloting. Tony Armas 1984 Baseball Abstract
  • One of 25 players with 3,000 hits.
  • Ty Cobb Tony Gwynn and Honus Wagner (8 each), Rod Carew Rogers Hornsby and Stan Musial (7 each) and Ted Williams
  • Hit over .360 four times and better than .300 15x.
  • Set a modern-day major league record with seven consecutive 200-hit seasons (1983-89).
  • Scored at least 100 runs (1983-89) and had 40 or more doubles seven seasons in a row (1985-91).

Boggs, Sandberg enter Hall of Fame Sunday
    By ERIC AHLQVIST
    Editor

In front of what will likely be the largest Induction Ceremony crowd in at least five years, the Hall of Fame will welcome two new members on Sunday.
Third baseman Wade Boggs and second baseman Ryne Sandberg will join the fraternity of baseball's elite beginning at 1:30 p.m. on the grounds of the Clark Sports Center. Also to be honored are baseball writer and ESPN analyst Peter Gammons, who will receive the annual J.G Taylor Spink Award for meritorious contributions to baseball writing, and the longtime voice of the San Diego Padres, Jerry Coleman, who will be presented with the 2005 Ford C. Frick award for major contributions to baseball broadcasting. Hall of Fame spokesman Brad Horn said Tuesday the Hall is projecting crowds of 20-25,000 for the Induction. "We have two players with national appeal and a record 52 Hall of Famers planning to attend, which combined with Friday's rededication ceremony sets the stage for a great Induction Weekend," Horn said. Following is an in-depth look at the careers of Boggs and Sandberg.

Saturday - at Tropicana field in front of 39,512 screaming fans, and at home, Wade Boggs stepped up to the plate and on a 2-2 pitch became the 22nd player in the history of the major leagues to bag his 3000th hit. ...And he did it with a home run to boot. He is the first player in history to do that. In a post-game interview, Boggs said "I knew as soon as the ball left the bat that it was a home run. I thought: I'll never see that ball again." The ball was indeed later returned to Wade by the fan who caught it - and with no demand for payment. There are some true fans left, after all. Boggs grew up in the Tampa Bay area and began his baseball career here in little league. He went on to the major leagues, and spent 11 seasons playing for the

By John Kekis ASSOCIATED PRESS 12:17 a.m. August 1, 2005 Four decades after both first dared to dream of baseball greatness, Boggs and Sandberg were inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame Sunday to the adoring cheers of thousands of Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cub fans. The long journey was finally over, and it was difficult to believe. "I am living proof that dreams come true," said Boggs, who began playing minor league ball in the Red Sox system in Elmira, N.Y., in 1976. "In life, so many things are taken for granted, but one thing I can honestly say is that I took every day, enjoyed putting on that uniform and playing the great game of baseball." Sandberg became one of the best second baseman in baseball history with the Cubs. "I wish you all could feel what I feel standing here," he said. "This is my last big game, this is my last big at-bat, this is my last time catching the final out. I dreamed of this as a child, but I had too much respect for baseball to think this was ever possible. I believe it is because I had so much respect for the game and respect for getting the most out of my ability that I stand here today."

"I was always Reggie Jackson and Pete Rose. All those guys." "I had a rope line for the home run on top of the garage, off the garage was a double, trees and picnic tables were the fielders," Sandberg said. "I played with a solid plastic golf ball. I remember putting my arms up in the air on a game-winning hit, 'Is it out of here? Yes!' And I was by myself." "The Hall of Fame is not something an athlete can set as a goal," said Boggs, a five-time AL batting champion for the Boston Red Sox who became just the 41st player elected on his first chance. "It's something that evolves." For both Boggs and Sandberg, it evolved slowly at first.
