Hallmark of Boggs was his plate discipline
August 1, 2005 COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. Why should we not be surprised that a third baseman playing for Elmira's New York-Penn League team in 1976 found a little free time to sneak away for a visit to the Baseball Hall of Fame? Wade Boggs always did have his eye on the prize. It's official now. Boggs is in The Club. He's a certified, card-carrying lodge brother of the Babe, the Georgia Peach, the Yankee Clipper, the Big Train, the Iron Horse, the Say-Hey Kid, and Mr. October. Boggs may never have had that extra something that officially renders a player ''beloved," a la Ted, Yaz, or Pudge, but he was relentlessly efficient, a man who irritated and frustrated pitchers almost as much by not swinging the bat (1,412 walks) as he did by swinging it (3,010 hits). He was Mr. On-Base Percentage before we even knew what on-base percentage was. He was even Mr. OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging percentage) before we knew what that was (a career .858, with a dazzling 1.049 in 1987).

Wade Boggs: 2005 Hall of Fame inductee
Nothing average about five-time batting champ
July 31, 2005 Wade Boggs goes into the Hall of Fame today, representing the Red Sox, and stirring memories of a wild and wacky time in Boston baseball. He played in Boston when the Celtics were king and the Patriots struggled to put fans in their dismal old stadium. He played for Ralph Houk, John McNamara, Joe Morgan, and Butch Hobson. He played before the construction of the .406 Club, and he claimed the monstrosity behind home plate made it harder to hit the ball over the right-field wall. ''I was always on the back page," Boggs acknowledged in a wide-ranging interview as he prepared for today's induction along with Chicago Cubs second baseman Ryne Sandberg. ''You guys [media] like quotes. When you wanted something honest I gave it to you and everybody else sugarcoated it, or wouldn't tell you, or they'd go into the trainer's room. Every time you came to me, I told you what was wrong. You guys loved that." There were on-field controversies. Boggs was accused of being selfish. Some teammates grumbled that he cared only about his stats, that he wouldn't give himself up and move a runner over, that he wouldn't try to hit homers if it meant sacrificing his average. Roger Clemens once groused about Boggs sitting out games at the end of 1986 to protect his lead over Don Mattingly in the race for the batting title. Meanwhile, Boggs's candor and accessibility got him in trouble and was used against him. He did not hide from the media and didn't mince words.

Fans' comments I will never forget the day the Devil Rays came to St. Pete. My son's school band had the pleasure of placing all the cushions in the seats, with some of the parents' help, of course. He really wanted an autograph from Wade Boggs and Fred McGriff and these two gentlemen were so nice and understanding a kid's dream and realized what role models they were. My son was able to get a baseball with both of his heroes' signatures and we still have that ball in a safe place. Mr. Boggs, I am so very happy for you, you are the most deserving baseball player that I have ever read about, heard of and I wish you the best in life. Linda Richardson, Brandon Wade, congrats on your induction into the Hall of Fame. I am from the Boston area and watched your career from the start. I met you through a mutual friend [Bill Moloney] and you were someone who regular people could relate with. You worked your ass off and you would take the time to talk to friends of Billy and have a beer with us. Of course we would buy. Congrats. Scott Braxten, Salisbury, Mass.

To get the clearest picture of the magnitude of Wade Boggs's production, consider this: in his 18-year career, Boggs reached base safely in an incredible 80% of his games and was the only batter in the twentieth century to have seven consecutive 200-hit seasons. ( Wee Willie Keeler pulled off eight straight from 1894 to 1901.) He appeared in twelve All-Star games as a third baseman, second only to

Sep. 19, 1967- Baseball player. Jim Abbott is one of an elite group of major-league pitchers to have thrown a no-hitter, a feat he accomplished while he was a New York Yankee in 1993. Abbott, who began the 1995 season as a member of the Chicago White Sox and ended it as a California Angel, is also among the few hurlers whose fastballs have been clocked at over ninety miles an hour. What makes his success all the more remarkable is the fact that he plays ball without a right hand. He was born with a rounded stub at the end of his right arm, with one small, finger-like protrusion where his right hand should be. He pitches with his left hand, with the palm of his glove resting on the stub. After each pitch, he quickly switches the glove to his left hand, so that he can catch or field balls thrown or hit back. Prior to becoming a major-league pitcher, Abbott was an Olympic gold medalist, a collegiate baseball all-star, and a high-school standout in three sports. Abbott's athletic achievements have amazed sports fans and inspired countless numbers of Americans with disabilities, who flock to ballparks to see him pitch. He receives hundreds of letters a week, many of them from handicapped children and their parents, and he tries to answer as many as he can, even though he has never considered himself to be disabled. "I just don't think all of this about me playing with one hand is as big an issue as everyone wants to make it," he told Ira Berkow of the New York Times (December 25, 1992). "I don't try to run from the attention about it; I just accept it." Abbott maintains that the toughest thing he faces is not his disability but major-league hitters. The feeling is apparently mutual. "He's got the hand that counts," Larry Sheets of the Baltimore Orioles told a reporter for the Washington Post (April 26, 1989) after facing Abbott's power pitching for the first time.

Wade Boggs Elected to Baseball Hall of Fame
Wade Boggs, once a member of the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Devil Rays, but most beloved in the hearts of New Yorkers as a NY Yankee (especially since he was a part of a World Series team), has been voted almost unanimously to the Baseball Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. Some of his stats: His career batting average is .328, and he's batted in 118 home runs and 1,014 runs in over 2,439 games. But who could forget that magical moment when, after the Yankees won the 1996 World Series, Boggs got onto a police horse and rode around the stadium . It would have been one thing if Boggs was riding the horse alone, but he bumped along riding behind a police officer. This made Gothamist laugh well into 1997. Boggs is a superstitious player . And here are some more stats and this is a Yankees.com story about his numbers Posted by Jen Chung in Sports
