Calling Wade Boggs "just" a singles hitter is selling the Hall of Famer short, writes columnist Mike Celizic.
COMMENTARY Mike Celizic NBCSports.com contributor Mike Celizic Wade Boggs was probably never appreciated as he should have been. And even now, inducted into the Hall of Fame, there isn't the buzz about him that there would be if he had made his mark on his game in a bigger way. He hit singles, mostly; 75 percent of his 3,010 hits were of the one-base variety. Just 118 of them cleared the fences. And there were a lot of people who said when he played and probably still say that if you can't hit home runs, you can't be a true superstar. That's nonsense, and people are beginning to realize it today, when baseball numbers crunchers like Bill James and general managers like Theo Epstein and Billy Beane are reintroducing the idea that there is nothing more important to scoring runs than getting on base. And in his day, few were as good at Boggs at doing that simple-sounding yet absurdly difficult task - getting safely to first.

Wade Boggs earned 91.9 percent of the vote when he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. - Wade Boggs cried when he acknowledged his father, who turned a scrawny kid into one of the game's toughest outs by teaching him that inside-out swing. Ryne Sandberg was simply Ryno - smooth, stoic and flush with reverence for the game. Four decades after they once dreamed of baseball greatness, Boggs and Sandberg were inducted Sunday into the Baseball Hall of Fame to the raucous cheers of thousands of Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cub fans. "There were many stops along the way," said Boggs, who began playing minor-league baseball in Elmira, N.Y., in 1976. "But today that train has pulled into Cooperstown, and I've found this family here at the Hall of Fame. My wife and I believe this is the beginning of another baseball journey." Boggs, who batted left-handed, was an undersized hitter who didn't attract much attention even though he finished his senior year at Plant High in Tampa, Fla., on a 26-for-33 tear. He was drafted in the seventh round by the Red Sox and then spent five-plus seasons in the minors before finally forcing Boston to promote him in 1981 after he led the International League in batting.

Career Hitting Record Baseball's best hitter during the 1980s, Boggs won five AL batting titles in a six-year period, from 1983 through 1988, and set a major league record by collecting more than 200 hits in seven consecutive seasons. The left-handed-hitting Boggs joined the Boston Red Sox during the 1982 season, when he was used in the outfield, at first base and third base, and as a designated hitter. He batted .349 in 104 games. The following year, he became the team's starting third baseman and won his first batting title with a .361 average. After slipping to .325 in 1984, he won four titles in a row with averages of .368, .357, .363, and .366. Boggs hit .300 each of the next four years, dropped all the way to .259 in 1992, then went to the New York Yankees as a free agent. In five years with the Yankees, Boggs hit over .300 four times, including a .342 average in 1994. His final major-league season was with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 1998. Blessed with an excellent eye, Boggs rarely struck out and drew a lot of walks. He led the league in walks with 105 in 1986 and 1265 in 1988, in runs scored with 128 in 1988 and 113 in 1989, and in doubles with 45 in 1988 and 51 in 1949. He was also the league leader in on-base percentage in 1983, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, and 1989.

Awards: All-Star (12): 1985-1996; Gold Glove 1994-1995 Hitting Bio Wade Boggs was a virtuoso with a bat and one of the game's true masters at striking a baseball between the foul lines at an alarmingly successful rate. Utilizing great bat control and a good eye, Boggs won five batting titles, strung together seven consecutive seasons of 200 or more hits, and earned 100 walks in four straight seasons. With his knack for getting on base, Boggs often batted leadoff, and scored at least 100 runs every season from 1983 to 1989. A member of the 3,000-hit club despite failing to get a chance to play in the big leagues regularly until he was nearly 25 years old, Boggs retired with a lofty .328 batting average. Quote "I used to tell my pitchers I could get them two strikes on Boggs easy, but from then on they were on their own. There's no doubt in my mind that he is the best two-strike hitter in history."
