Friday, January 24, 2003 Biggio requests extension from Astros Baseball notebook
The Associated Press
HOUSTON -
Astros owner Drayton McLane is considering a contract-extension request by 14-year veteran Craig Biggio, who will be moved from second base to the outfield this season to make room for Jeff Kent. "This isn't just talk about an extension," Houston general manager Gerry Hunsicker said Thursday after meeting with McLane. "It's a situation that evolved regarding the signing of Kent and regarding Craig moving to the outfield." Biggio and McLane met for two hours Wednesday. "Craig just wanted to get a few things off his chest," Hunsicker said. Biggio's contract expires at the end of this season. McLane doesn't expect a decision until next week. "I told him we'd review it and get back to him," McLane was quoted as saying on the Astros' Web site. "We'll have to look at our long-term finances and see how we can fit this into the budget." Biggio has spent his entire career with Houston and is the team's career leader in games, hits and runs. McLane has said he wants Biggio and first baseman Jeff Bagwell to end their careers with the Astros.

Astros second baseman Craig Biggio is within one hit of being the all time record holder for being hit by pitch.
HOUSTON - Craig Biggio hobbled into the Houston Astros' clubhouse following a recent win, with bags of ice wrapped around his lower back, right shoulder and left knee. Biggio will soon enter the record books because of career filled with afternoons like these, a game where he was twice hit by pitches. He's perilously close to redefining what it means to take one, or maybe even two, for the team. "It's a painful way to make a living," Biggio said, smiling through the aches. Heading into Friday night's game, Biggio had been plunked 266 times in his career, putting him one away from tying Don Baylor's modern-era mark of 267. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Biggio will need to be plunked 21 more times to tie the all-time record held by Hall of Famer Hughie Jennings, who was hit 287 times in a 17-year career that started in 1891. Virtually a 185-pound bull's-eye, Biggio has been whacked in the face just once, drilled in the head four times and been pelted from shoulders to shins on 261 other occasions.

1999 Post-Season Review Houston Astros

January 14, 2000 This article takes a look at how the Houston did in the 1999 season relative to preseason expectations. Capsule Summary
Projected Actual Runs for 829 823 Runs allowed 733 675 Run Margin 96 148 Wins 93 97 Pythagorean wins 91 97 Placement 1st 1st After 35 years of what fans have come to accept as major league baseball even though it was a revolutionary development at the time to play baseball indoors on a plastic carpet the Astrodome closed at the end of the 1999 season. The last season in the Astrodome also marked the end of an era for the franchise as well, as the Astros will now face greatly increased expectations for the future. Although they came very close to the World Series in two of the most memorable League Championship Series ever, the Astros have never made it to the Fall Classic. Now, after winning their division for each of the last three years, and with a state-of-the-art new ballpark set to generate beaucoup bucks for the team treasury, anything short of being on the field when the last out of the 2000 season is made will be viewed as a disappointment.

Hearing The Blue Van Body Armor is For Sissies
It's good to know that I am not the only person who has a problem with the excessive body armor that some MLB players are wearing these days. Rockies' pitcher Jason Jennings was throwing a shutout against Roger Clemens yesterday when he grazed Craig Biggio on his robotic-like massive arm guard in the third inning. Two batters later, Morgan Ensberg hit one deep. Biggio takes it on his sissy arm(or). After the game Jennings said of Biggio , "The ball's about two inches off the black. And he isn't getting out of the way. It's tough to swallow." I'm sure Jennings was extra pissed because he hit Biggio twice in the game. No wonder Biggio has been plunked 266 times and counting (as is well documented in this blog ). If I could wear some bullet proof

Commitment to Biggio has more than been met
    By JOSE DE JESUS ORTIZ
At last count, $71,553,000 buys a lot of enchiladas and a lot of brisket. And $71,553,000 is a nice way to say thanks. ADVERTISEMENT Nonetheless, $71,553,000 doesn't buy you a championship. Heck, if you break it down, it has bought the Astros seven hits from Craig Biggio in the postseason. That's a bargain price of $10,221,857 per hit over 14 games and 54 at-bats. Call me a management stooge if you want, but it's silly to say Drayton McLane owes it to Biggio to bring back the veteran next year. If Biggio meets all his incentives this year, he will have earned $71,553,000 from the Astros since 1989, his first full season in the majors. If for some reason Biggio is hurt and cannot meet his remaining incentives for plate appearances, the number drops by $250,000.
