Padres Within Reach of Greatness... I Think
By Matt "The Crank" Wall Greatness, that is, when measured by the yardsticks of grade inflation, social promotion, automatic non-merit-based pay increases, and other similar social phenomena in the modern age. The Padres have a more or less comfortable five-game lead in the NL West this year, at this writing sporting a 71-73 record and a five-game advantage in the loss column over both the Giants and Dodgers. The NL West is weak, but not as depleted as the AL West, where there are only four teams. But the AL West has been a powerhouse for a while, with all four teams being decent and producing their fair share of wild cards. What the Padres are threatening to do win a division title, and a shot at the World's Championship, with a sub-.500 record has never been done. Even if they fail to do this, they almost certainly will have the worst record for a playoff qualifier for a non-strike year, ever. Watch out, you 1973 Mets. If we go back before the era of division play, when there were two eight-team leagues, and omit the shortened season of 1918, there were only five teams that made the post-season and did it winning fewer than 90 games even during the era of only 154 games per season. (The 154-game schedule was established with the 1904 season, although many rainouts and browned-out games were not made up in the early part of last century.) We're talking five teams in 65 years.

86. The Baseball Guru - GIVE ICHIRO AND BIGGIO THE MVP By John B. Holway

http://baseballguru.com/jholway/analysisjholway02.html
John Holway History GIVE ICHIRO AND BIGGIO THE MVP By John B Holway Ichiro? Boone? Giambi? Bonds? Sosa? Gonzalez? The annual MVP handicapping begins. Who would you want up to bat for your team when the game is on the line? The early favorites seem to be Giambi and Bonds. They're both very good hitters. But MVP? A game-by-game, play-by-play analysis says otherwise. The real MVPs - the guys who get the runs when they count most and who let the team down the least were Ichiro and Craig Biggio John B. Holway has written ten books on baseball, including the first one in English on Japanese baseball. Like most everyone else, the baseball writers who do the voting go by the usual criteria - home runs, RBI, and batting average. The assumption is that a batter who hits a lot of homers and bats in a lot of runs, will also do it more often than anyone else in the clutch. This sounds reasonable. But maybe it is, and maybe it isn't. I use a different standard and have been tracking players off and on with it for over 50 years batters can win and lose games just as much as pitchers can. I've found that about half the time the "official" MVP is not the leader in Batting Wins. Here's how it works: A BattingWin goes to every man on the winning team who produces enough runs, scored or batted in, to equal the margin of victory. A Batting Loss goes to every man on the losing team who strands enough men on base to equal the margin of defeat (however I first give credit for runs he does produce).

Baseball Fever General Baseball PDA View Full Version : Catcher's ERA abolishthedh 05-29-2003, 07:07 AM In another post, I mentioned Catcher's ERA as being a great idea, but not knowing how to find the information to make use of it. I thought I would post a formal request for leads on the matter.
Catcher's ERA is an idea put forth in The Diamond Appraised, by Craig Wright and Tom House (Simon and Schuster, 1989). I don't know whether the book is still being published. The idea is to calculate an ERA for the innings a catcher plays as catcher for his team. It is calculated exactly the same way as a pitcher's era, except for catchers. The problem is the availability of data for various catchers throughout baseball. We need the data for innings caught, and for the number earned runs given up in those innings.
The authors introduce the idea by posing the question of why managers who platoon catchers don't resort to changing catchers on occasion, instead of changing pitchers. It could also be very useful to determine whether or not two catchers should be platooned, whether a team should carry a pitcher's "personal catcher", or whether a player like Piazza should be moved to first base when he recovers from an injury. ;)
Anyway, we should stay on topic. Does anyone know where to find the data for innings caught, and the number of earned runs given up in those innings?

CBS SportsLine.com wire reports
ST. LOUIS Chris Carpenter started ahead of Roger Clemens in the All-Star Game, then topped him again a few days later. The St. Louis right-hander outpitched Clemens to become the NL's first 14-game winner. He tossed a three-hitter and inadvertently played a major role in his team's big inning, leading the Cardinals to a 3-0 victory Sunday that completed a three-game sweep of the Houston Astros Cardinals manager Tony La Russa picked Carpenter to start for the NL on Tuesday over more heralded choices such as Clemens. "I don't concern myself with what Roger does," Carpenter said. "The only thing I can do is give my team a chance to win and beat their lineup. Not beat Roger." He's tied with Jon Garland of the White Sox, who won his 14th game on Sunday, for the major-league lead.
