Berra, Yogi
(Lawrence; ), baseball player. An outstanding catcher for the New York Yankees and American League most valuable player three times, Berra was a fine hitter and consistent fielder. His modesty and congeniality made him a great favorite with baseball fans, as did his talent for such pithy comments as "It ain't over till it's over." He also managed pennant winners with the New York Yankees and the New York Mets and was elected to the baseball Hall of Fame in 1972.

Baseball Fever General Baseball Hall of Fame Talk PDA View Full Version : 5 Tier HOF (v.2) - The Ultimate J W 07-08-2003, 11:27 AM When I first joined Baseball Fever (aka Baseball Almanac) a few of the older members got together to put divide markers on the field of 189 Major League players in the Hall of Fame (Ozzie Smith had just been elected). They started with the top 40, and voted on their Tiers 40 at a time until they had 29 left at the bottom.
Now that we will be adding Eddie Murray and Gary Carter, I figure it's time to revise the list with the throngs of new posters here.
I also declined making lists last time as I felt I wasn't knowledgeable enough to have an opinion. I'm looking forward to doing it now ;) .

Career Hitting Record Other Resources After playing in the minor leagues in 1943, Berra joined the U. S. Navy. He returned to professional baseball in 1946. Called up by the New York Yankees for the last weeks of the season, he hit a home run in his first major league game. In 1947 and 1948, Berra was a part-time catcher for the Yankees and was also often used in right field because of his hitting and strong arm. When Casey Stengel became the Yankee manager in 1949, he made Berra the starting catcher and hired former Yankee great Bill Dickey as a coach to help polish his defense. Like Stengel, Berra was known for his malapropismshe once said of Dickey, "He's learning me his experience"but he was widely respected by people in the game for his knowledge of baseball. Stengel called him "my assistant manager." A left-handed hitter with power, Berra liked to swing at bad pitches, but it worked for him. He batted over .300 three times, hit 20 or more home runs nine times, and had 30 or more home runs twice. A fine clutch hitter, he had the first pinch-hit home run in World Series history, in 1947, and he hit a grand slam home run in the 1956 series. Five times he drove in more than 100 runs.
