Yogi Berra
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Yogi Berra on his 80th birthday Lawrence Peter "Yogi" Berra (born May 12 ) is a former catcher and manager in Major League Baseball who played almost his entire career for the New York Yankees . He is one of only four players to be named the Most Valuable Player of the American League three times, and one of only six managers to lead both American and National League teams to the World Series . He currently lives in Montclair, New Jersey Born in an area of St. Louis called " The Hill ", Berra was originally nicknamed Lawdie , a diminutive of his name Lawrence . He picked up his nickname from a friend who said he resembled a Hindu holy man ( yogi ) that they had seen in a movie. Young Mr. Berra apparently liked to sit on the ground while waiting for his turn to bat with his arms and legs crossed in a yoga-like position. (The Hanna-Barbera cartoon character Yogi Bear was named after Berra.) He began playing baseball in local American Legion leagues, where he learned the basics of play as a catcher. After rejecting an offer from the St. Louis Cardinals

YOGI BERRA
If he didn’t actually exist, Yogi Berra probably would have been invented as a cartoon character. The left-handed hitting catcher won three Most Valuable Player awards and ten World Series titles with the Yankees. He holds the career record for World Series games played, at-bats, hits and doubles. He was one of the most unlikely stars in baseball history – with his paunchy body, long arms, and large nose, he was razzed by opponents who were consistently beaten by his play on the field.
Nicknames
Berra's given name was Lawrence Peter. The name "Yogi" was tagged on him as a youngster because he was funny and awkward looking, and friends felt the name fit him. Cartoon character "Yogi the Bear" was named after Berra, not the other way around.

Lawrence Peter "Yogi" Berra was born on May 12, 1925 in St. Louis, Mo. and grew up on Elizabeth Street in a neighborhood called "The Hill". Yogi got his "nickname" from Bobby Hofman, a childhood friend. While watching a movie about an Indian snake charmer, Bobby noted that Yogi had a striking resemblance to the hindu man, saying "That yogi walks like Lawdie ( Larry) Berra," and the name stuck. Joe Garagiola tells a funny story about Yogi giving Carmen an anniversary card signed 'Yogi Berra.' She asked him if he thought he had to sign his last name so she wouldn't think it came from some other Yogi." In 1942 Yogi was playing minor League ball and was approached by the then Cardinals General Manager, Branch Rickey. Rickey had just signed Garagiola for $500, but Rickey offered Yogi $250 and Yogi turned him down. It was reported that Rickey said of Yogi, "He'll never make anything more than a Triple A ballplayer at best." Yankees scout Leo Browne disagreed and convinced the Yankees that Yogi was worth the $500, so the Yankees signed him. Yogi was assigned to the Norfolk Tars of the Class B Piedmont League. During a double header, Yogi had perhaps his most productive game ever. He is credited with driving in 23 runs that day.
