Look at a list of the top 5 catchers of all-time and Johnny Bench is a lock to be near the top (if not in the No. 1 slot). With his career accomplishments and his combination of power and defensive skills, induction into the Hall of Fame was a certainty. A powerful contributor at the plate, Bench was equally as impressive behind it. In his first 10 full seasons in the majors, Bench brought home the Gold Glove 10 times. During the 1970s, he was a key component of the Reds teams that won 6 division titles, 4 NL pennants and 2 World Series. Bench hit 10 home runs in postseason play with 5 of those coming in the World Series. His list of career accomplishments is impressive:
  • 14 All-Star teams 389 career home runs (His 327 as a catcher was a record until it was broken by Carlton Fisk) He led the league in total bases in 1974 with 315. It is the only time that a catcher has ever led the league in this category.

Taking that advice, he was selected in the 1965 amateur draft by the Cincinnati Reds and signed with them. After two seasons in the minors, Bench made Cincinnati's Major League roster for the 1968 season. this marked the beginning of one of the most successful careers in baseball history and to Johnny's ascension as a celebrity. Today Johnny enjoys a well-rounded, stellar career. By making the transition from athletic superstar to successful broadcaster, he has proven himself a winner in tow of the most popular areas in American culture: baseball and the media. He maintains a sense of balance by using his celebrity status to aid worthy causes, such as the Heart Association, the American Cancer society (as National Chairman of “Athletes vs. Cancer”), the Kidney Foundation, Franciscan Sisters of the Poor Health System and Muscular Dystrophy. He also supports the Cincinnati Symphony, the Museum of Science and Industry, and his own Johnny Bench Scholarship Fund which grants financial aid to Cincinnati college students. Clement received the award at a banquet in Wichita, Kansas, that featured Hall of Fame catcher Johnny Bench and Hall of Fame shortstop Ozzie Smith. A national voting committee decided the honor as Clement was one of three finalists for the award. Arizona's Nick Hundley and Texas catcher Taylor Teagarden were also finalists. Clement is the first USC catcher to win the award and the second to be a finalist (Alberto Concepcion in 2002). Selected third overall on June 7 by the Seattle Mariners in the 2005 MLB draft, Clement led the Trojans in most offensive categories this season. He batted .348 (80-for-230) with 17 doubles, 15 home runs and 54 RBI. He also led the team in walks (44) while stealing a career-high five bases and throwing out 25 of 68 baserunners (37%). Greatest Catcher in the history of Major League Baseball
Johnny Bench was born in Oklahoma City, OK on December 7, 1947 and grew up in the small town of Binger, OK. His childhood dream was to become a major league baseball player and his father counseled that the position of catcher was the most direct route to that goal. Taking that advice, he was selected and signed in the 1965 amateur draft by the Cincinnati Reds. After two seasons in the minors, Bench made Cincinnati’s Major League roster for the 1968 season. This marked the beginning of one of the most successful careers in baseball history and to Johnny’s ascension as a celebrity. Over the years, Johnny has maintained a sense of balance by using his celebrity status to aid such worthy causes as the heart Association, the American Cancer society (as past National Chairman of Athletes vs. Cancer), the Kidney Foundation, Franciscan Sisters of Poor Health System, the American Lung Association, and the “Catch the Cure” program of the Children’s Hospital of Cincinnati. Johnny has also spent quite some time in entertainment, logging thousands of hours in personal appearance on television networks such as ESPN and Fox Sports, in addition to participating in events such as touring with Bob Hope’s Christmas Shows, and visiting troops in the Far East during Desert Storm. He has also sung with the Cincinnati Pops, written books and hosted the Emmy Award-winning instructional show, The Baseball Bunch.
