Player Spotlight Craig Tomarkin The following comparison of Pete Rose to his long-time teammates: Bench, Morgan, Foster and Perez, shows that he was not in the top 3 players on his own team (and we're not even including the pitchers on his team such as Tom Seaver). To illustrate the point, batting records of their best single season, top 5 seasons, top 10 seasons and careers were compared. Their seasons were sorted by the following criteria to determine which is their "best." And, with exception of the "career" totals, no season with fewer than 400 plate appearances was included. The players were sorted by OPS (on base avg + slugging avg) and by Total Avg (TA=batting avg + slugging avg). Then, the rankings were averaged to determine the total combined ranking. After studying the table below, also consider the intangibles. While I don't consider Pete Rose a superior fielder, to his credit, he won 2 Gold Gloves as an outfielder. His teammates winning Gold Gloves, Bench who won 10 and Morgan who won 5, are in the Hall of Fame, Foster and Perez didn't win any and are not. As far as base running, if you use stolen bases as a measure, Rose was adequate, but not superior. To me, while he was fun to watch (I admit I was a big Reds fan) and longevity is a big factor, by most fundamental and widely accepted statistical measures, he just wasn't as obvious a choice for the Hall of Fame as some make it seem. Sorry Pete!

Johnny Bench was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on December 7, 1947 and grew up in the small town of Binger, Oklahoma. Johnny's childhood dream was to become a major league baseball player and his father counseled that the position of catcher was the most direct route to that goal. Taking that advice, he was selected and signed in the 1965 amateur draft by the Cincinnati Reds. After two seasons in the minors, Bench made Cincinnati's Major League roster for the 1968 season. This marked the beginning of one of the most successful careers in baseball and to Johnny's ascension as a celebrity.
Over the years, Johnny has used his celebrity status to aid such worthy causes as the Cincinnati Symphony, Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, the Kidney Foundation, Muscular Dystrophy, Franciscan Sisters of Poor Health System. He also started and maintained the Johnny Bench Scholarship Fund, which to date has provided funds for 275 students to attend college in the Cincinnati area.
Johnny has spent quite some time in entertainment also, logging thousands of hours in personal appearances on TV and such events as touring with Bob Hope Christmas Shows and also visiting troops in the Far East and Desert Storm. He has also sung with the Cincinnati Pops, authored books, and was the host of the Emmy Award-winning instructional show "The Baseball Bunch".

Votes Never Jumped Too much San Diego Chicken Singing (There Is Nothing Like A Game) Johnny Bench and crew dance to "Centerfield" Tommy Lasorda as the Baseball Wizard Other Thoughts:
  • The Baseball Bunch never jumped the shark. I looked forward to watching Johnny Bench, my favorite ballplayer, and the San Diego Chicken every week. That was before ESPN and satellite tv became popular and you didn't have access to all of the games and players. All you got was the game of the week on Saturday, Monday Night Baseball, TBB and This Week in Baseball. I guess TBB got cancelled due to product saturation. I remember seeing one where Johnny Bench and the kids were doing a song and dance number to the John Fogerty hit "Centerfield". As if the song weren't bad enough, it was redone with a bunch of kids singing. I won't even mention the dancing. It still haunts me to this day. The Baseball Bunch never jumped! I lived down the street from where the show was filmed (in Tucson, Arizona). It was a big deal to go to the park every spring and watch Keith Hernandez, Andre Dawson, Bill Madlock, and other great players from that era. Johnny Bench was very, well, not pleasant, but all of the other players signed autographs and took time to talk to kids and parents who came to watch. This was a fun show and, as previously mentioned, was before the cable TV boom. Thus it was one of the few opportunities fans had to see their players in a one-on-one type atmosphere. As the intro song said, "You gotta love the Baseball Bunch!"
