I guess I am thinking possibly Larkin as well only because of his position....
Not even sure I think he deserves it..... The Commissioner 09-21-2003, 05:39 PM Belle should definitely make it, but he probably won't due to the degree of his unpopularity. Larkin also deserves to make it, but once again, I'm not sure if that translates into him actually making it or not? Cougar 09-24-2003, 11:44 PM

After the home run, Billy Martin (Yankees Manager) approached umpire Tim McClelland to protest the fact that there was too much pine tar on the baseball bat. The MLB rulebook states that: "The bat handle, for not more than 18 inches from the end, may be covered or treated with any material or substance to improve the grip. Any such material or substance, which extends past the 18-inch limitation, shall cause the bat to be removed from the game".

A game with more history and honor than any other sport there is. And who better to represent the opposite of this honor during the mid 1990's then slugger Albert Belle. Albert Belle was one hell of a ball player. He's been out of the game since a hip injury in 2000, but in his prime, he was at the top of the league's best power hitters. In 1993 he led the league in RBIs, in the shortened season of 1994 he batted .357 and in 1995 led the league with 50 home runs, a number that at the time (only seven years ago) was a lot more than today's standards. He was a perennial all star and one of the league's top players. Yet to many, he was far from the model ball player. Throughout his career he had a history of short tempers and bad decisions that led to countless suspensions and a black eye on his career. It started back in college, when while playing for LSU in the College World Series Belle was suspended for trotting out an off the wall single. That was in 1987. He was drafter by the Cleveland Indians the next year, and in 1990 Belle was suspended 5 games by Cleveland management after trashing a sink in the Colorado Springs clubhouse during a post game tirade. On their advice he was admitted to the Cleveland Clinic for treatment of alcohol addiction and anger problems. This was just the beginning of the on/off the field antics of Albert Belle.

What is your best baseball moment?
"Getting to the big leagues was my best moment. I think anybody that's gotten there would say that, unless maybe they won a World Series or something."
How about your worst?
"Probably getting suspended in the Midwest League for 30 games for pulling the tarp and getting caught doing it. (Laughs) I think we were on like a 17 day road trip and we wanted to get out of there a day early."
Who's the most talented player you've ever played with?

In 2003, Sammy Sosa was busted for using a corked bat to add some extra pop to his swing. The former Chicago Cub and National League homerun champ was suspended seven games for the corked bat. Baseball Fever
Friday, August 9, 2002 Hey everyone. It's been an incredibly long hiatus, over a year since the last update, but the Baseblog is back. I am very sorry that I have been so infrequent with this site, but I hope to resolve that and keep this site updated as a regular site from now on. This is an incredibly unusual time for baseball, which is why I was interested in starting this site up again and documenting it properly. I hope you all will enjoy it. Tuesday, March 13, 2001 Infrequent Updates Just wanted to apologize for the blatantly infrequent updates so far. Unfortunately, the news so far hasn't been all that interesting. Hopefully things will pick up and there will be more to talk about once opening day comes around. Please bear with me until then. Benches Clear After Jordan Hit By Brown Pitch During Atlanta/LA Game Nomar's Wrist Will Be Re-Evaluated I have to think that he will eventually be fine, but this is definitely a troubling development. I'm not a Red Sox fan per se, but I am essentially a fan of any team that can challenge the Yankees, and the Red Sox are certainly on this list. Losing Nomar for any length of time could be a major blow. Gary Sheffield fires agent, hires Scott Boras

ALBERT A LONG WAY FROM A NO-BELLE PEACE PRIZE
Why can't a world that is dysfunctional enough to embrace Dennis Rodman accommodate Albert Belle? Belle must be thinking the same thing. Rodman is getting his own TV show, albeit on MTV. Belle gets nothing but grief. Maybe it's the hair. Rodman may be a cross-dressing, head-butting, body-piercing, semi-intelligible freak, but his ever-changing hair color helps make him appear clown-like, comical ... even harmless. At least, that's the guess here. Rodman flaunts his weirdness and ends up in the company of Cindy Crawford and MTV bimbette Jenny McCarthy. Belle, meanwhile, is linked with menacing Marge Schott, a crude, chain-smoking outcast. It's no wonder, then, that Belle said last week at the All-Star Game that he believes he is the target of a ``smear campaign.'' You don't hear the phrase ``smear campaign'' used much anymore. Sounds like a holdover from the McCarthy Era (That's Joe, no relation to Jenny). Smear is an odd word to use in 1996, when every athlete's problem, it seems, boils down to ``getting no respect.''

"The strongest thing baseball has going for it today is yesterdays." - LAWRENCE RITTER, Author of The Glory of Their Times Beating the Braves, 3-2, Giant hurler George Wiltse runs his career record to 12-0. 'Hooks' dozen consecutive victories establishes the record for the most wins at the start of a career for a starter. The Braves play their ninth consecutive doubleheader. The streak, which began on September 4th, sees the team lose five in a row, including four to the Giants. During the fifth inning of the second game of doubleheader, a giant swarm of gnats engulfs Ebbets Field causing the game to be postponed. At Ebbets Field Cardinal starter, Cloyd Boyer, hurts his arm while warming up and is replaced by Red Munger. The reliever goes the distance beating the Dodgers, 6-2, getting credit for a complete game, but not for a game started.

To his detractors, Albert Belle was Mike Tyson in cleats. To his fans, he was misunderstood and given a bad rap by the media. What gets lost in the argument about his personality and forgotten because his career ended so abruptly, is that Belle was one of the most feared hitters in major league history. Born Albert Jojuan Belle on August 25, 1966 in Shreveport, LA, he became an Eagle Scout as a youngster. The son of school teachers, he graduated 4th in his high school class and attended nearby Louisiana State University (LSU). Known at the time as Joey (short for Jojuan), Belle set several school records at LSU before a behavioral related suspension cost him a chance to play in the College World Series. Despite concerns about his attitude and rumors about his character, the Cleveland Indians selected the troubled prodigy in the second round of the 1987 amateur draft. Belle debuted with the Indians on July 15, 1989, and appeared in 62 games that season, hitting 7 homeruns in 218 at bats.
