C RACKSMOKERS OF MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL BELLE, ALBERT
Timeline tracing some of Cleveland slugger Albert Belle's more celebrated transgressions:
After attacking an obnoxious and unruly fan and failing to run out ground balls during the Southeastern Conference Tournament in Starkville, Miss., LSU coach Skip Bertman suspended Belle from the 1987 College World Series in Omaha, Neb.
While playing at Class A-Kinston (N.C.) in 1988, manager Mike Hargrove, now Cleveland's manager, sent Belle home at midseason for repeatedly failing to hustle.
After allowing Belle to cool down for two weeks, the Indians re-assigned Belle to Waterloo (Iowa), a lower-level Class-A club. Belle refused to play and was sent home for the remainder of the season.
After what he deemed unnecessary harassment from a fan at Cleveland Stadium in 1990, Belle threw a baseball into the chest of the man. Major League Baseball suspended Belle one week.
In the winter of 1990, Belle admitted himself to the Cleveland Clinic, where he spent two months being treated for alcoholism and underwent counseling to control his temper.
Belle charged Kansas City pitcher Neal Heaton at the mound after Heaton threw behind Belle's back during a game in 1992.

In Defense of Albert Belle By Eric Enders
March 10, 2001 The man with the worst reputation in baseball is being forced to retire, to the media’s great delight. There has been a recent proliferation of columns by baseball writers wishing Albert Belle the worst, saying they won’t miss him and that baseball will be better off without him. All of them ignore one small fact: that Albert Belle is perhaps the most misunderstood athlete of his generation. Egads! An interview! ) “I don’t get excited talking about myself. Guys such as Sandy Koufax, Joe DiMaggio and Steve Carlton did not interview, and it was no big deal. They were quiet. I am also quiet. I just want to concentrate on baseball. Why does everyone want to hear me talk, anyway?” Sounds perfectly reasonable to me. So he doesn’t like talking in public. Big deal. Leave him be. Since beat reporters are the guys (and they are almost all guys) who vote for the Hall of Fame, their distaste for Belle will probably cost him a spot in baseball’s shrine. I don’t much care whether Belle makes the Hall of Fame or not, but it would seem a shame to penalize one of baseball’s greatest players just because he’d rather go home after the game than submit himself to a bunch of stupid questions. I’m not convinced that Albert is a bad guy, but even if he is, is that reason enough to keep him out of the Hall of Fame? It’s never been reason enough before. From Cap Anson to Ty Cobb to Joe DiMaggio to Tom Yawkey, the Hall of Fame as it stands is a virtual Hall of Assholes. So why change things now?

Phat Albert
By Lance Linden, March 16, 2001
For those of you too busy not watching the XFL to notice, Albert Belle, the only player ever to hit 50 doubles and 50 home runs in the same season, announced his retirement recently. This announcement initiated a slew of articles discussing whether or not Belle should one day be elected to the Hall of Fame. The arguments, as these arguments so often do, focus mostly on comparing Belle to only those players who suit the writer's pre-conceived notions of whether or not Belle is deserving of enshrinement. The two players most often mentioned in the Belle comparisons are Kirby Puckett (in) and Dick Allen (out).
Now, let me make this clear: I do not care whether or not Belle is elected to the Hall of Fame. I do not care about Bill Mazeroski's recent selection, or the voters' continued neglect of Bert Blyleven. I do not care about who is in and who, at least for now, is out. You could induct every member of the 1962 Mets and I wouldn't bat an eye. The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum exists as a celebration of baseball history and was never intended to be a yes/no referendum on who met the ever-changing definition of "greatness." Blyleven was a better pitcher than Jack Chesbro; the Hall's exclusion of the former and acceptance of the latter changes that not one bit.

The game's most intriguing player tries to put his controversial past behind him When Albert Belle decided to leave the Cleveland Indians and sign a five-year, $55 million contract with the Chicago White Sox, he not only became the game's highest-paid player (until Barry Bonds surpassed him two months later), but he also started a transformation that has revealed a side of him that, previously, rarely surfaced in public. Somewhere along the way, during the 343-mile trip from Cleveland to the Windy City, Belle found a new attitude. The 6-foot-2 muscular frame is the same, the pigeon-toed walk is the same; the sometimes partially bearded and cherubic face is the same, but, in many ways, this isn't the same guy who gained a reputation for being surly, moody and difficult. With the move to Chicago, he has become a more mellow, more approachable superstar. These days terms like accessible and agreeable seem to fit him like a fancy, tailored suit. Even his harshest critics say this is a new Albert Belle who is much different from the one who became the most talked-about and, many say, the most intriguing player in the game.

"Albert didn't trust people. He was always sure that somehow, somebody was out to get him," says Peter Gammons on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. Albert Belle's career was halted by a bum hip. What if they held a Hall of Fame induction ceremony, and no one came? For years, Albert Belle's offensive numbers pointed directly toward Cooperstown, even while the often offensive outfielder antagonized the media, the very people who would vote for him. A bad hip may have rescued Cooperstown, prematurely halting a career that during the 1990s set high production and durability standards. Bud Black, a Cleveland Indians teammate, nicknamed Belle "Snapper." Others simply called him crazy. Belle could flare up at any time, even at friends, and often turned violent. "Albert's snapped at me. He's gone off at other coaches," said Indians coach Dave Nelson in 1996. "You never know which Albert's going to show up." At Louisiana State, Belle chased a heckling fan in the stands, was suspended and ended up missing the College World Series. In the minor leagues, he destroyed part of a bathroom after a tough night at bat. In the majors, he turned up the intensity. He struck a photographer and a fan with thrown balls in separate incidents, charged the mound to fight pitchers, verbally chastised NBC reporter Hannah Storm before a World Series game, chased egg-throwing teenagers from his house on Halloween and leveled Milwaukee infielder Fernando Vina with a forearm hit while running the bases.

    Albert Belle
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Albert Jojuan Belle (born August 25 in Shreveport, Louisiana ) is a former outfielder in Major League Baseball One of the leading sluggers of his time, he was the first player to hit 50 doubles and 50 home runs in a season. However, his career was repeatedly marred by his particularly surly conduct both on and off the field. He was noted for rudeness to reporters and fans , occasionally becoming violent. Belle played collegiately at LSU and upon finishing was drafted by the Cleveland Indians . While in the minor league system he was known as "Joey", and was thought of as a top prospect, but a high-risk one due to his conduct. Belle underwent counseling, and became known as "Albert". Briefly his behavior improved, but after a time the anger returned in conflicts with reporters and fans. In the winter of 1996, he signed with the Chicago White Sox (and was temporarily the highest paid player in baseball). He ended his career with the Baltimore Orioles , retiring at age 34 as a result of degenerative osteoarthritis in his hip.
