30. Baseball Musings: Bell And Brinkman
Buddy bell got an earful from umpire Joe Brinkman last night and didn t like it . Futility Infielder jay Jaffe s baseball site. More than just a blog.
http://www.baseballmusings.com/archives/010505.php
Main July 31, 2005 Bell and Brinkman Buddy Bell got an earful from umpire Joe Brinkman last night and didn't like it. Bell questioned a call on Berroa — complaining that a called strike was in fact too low — when he said Brinkman responded with a profanity-laced tirade. “We’re supposed to sit back,” Bell said, “and we’re supposed to say, ‘OK, whatever they want to say.’ He can call me whatever he wants and get away with it? “To be honest with you, there’s a little bit of a double-standard when umpires can do whatever they want and you can’t do anything back to them.” According to the article, the exchange between manager and umpire could be heard by the fans. Was anyone at the game last night? What exactly was said?
Posted by David Pinto at 10:19 AM Umpires TrackBack (0) Comments I don't know what was said at the game, but is this something that might be addressed in the offseason? A lot of people seem to be complaining about umpires overstepping their bounds recently. One example I can think of is David Wells getting thrown out by the second base umpire a few weeks ago. 31. Baseball Fever - Greatest Blue Jay Ever?
baseball Fever is a baseball discussion forum made for serious baseball fans, No, Mr. bell is not the greatest jay ever. The best that season yes.

Baseball Fever American League Toronto Blue Jays PDA View Full Version : Greatest Blue Jay Ever? The Commissioner 09-27-2003, 09:55 PM Has Carlos Delgado accomplished enough at this point to be considered the greatest player in club history? If not who does deserve that honor? rudy 09-29-2003, 11:05 AM I see the words "Greatest Jay Ever" and only one player comes to my mind, regardless of stats.
Dave Stieb.
He WAS the Blue Jays. Kroxquo 09-29-2003, 05:23 PM Unitl he wins an MVP, I don't think that Delgado has yet matched what George Bell did for the Jays. 09-30-2003, 04:01 PM Dave Stieb is the first player who comes to mind when I hear "Blue Jays".
His Number should have been Retired long ago by the Toronto Brass.
Other Players who have produced good Stats are: Carlos Delgado, Joe Carter and George Bell.
Infielder, Tony Fernandez is another Player who contributed well to the Blue Jays success over the years. Atlanta Braves Freak 10-01-2003, 03:41 PM If Delgado hits about .290 for his career and hits 500 HR he can be considered the greatest Blue Jay ever. For now it has to be Joe Carter. Jose Tartabul 10-02-2003, 01:39 PM

32. Baseball Fever - New Rankings For SS Based On Win Shares
baseball Fever is a baseball discussion forum made for serious baseball fans, historians, jay bell 81.97 34. Dave Bancroft 81.26 35. Dick Groat 78.40
http://baseball-fever.com/archive/index.php/t-6998.html
Baseball Fever General Baseball PDA View Full Version : New Rankings for SS based on Win Shares cubbieinexile 03-10-2003, 07:30 PM In Bill James' New Historical Abstract he ranks by position based on a formula largely reliant on Win Shares. I disagree with some of his methods, in that he places too much emphasis on Peak Years than he does on overall career. I have changed the formula so that now to get the rankings I use a players top 4 season average plus best 8 consectutive year average as well as Total Win Shares/Total Games*162. Plus I changed the subjective part, taking out the clutch and defensive aspect since I have no way of knowing either of these. Bill's formula was a 3 year average plus 5 year consectutive average plus the Harmonic mean of career winshares divided by ten and 25. I removed the last part. Plus for the age bonus I set the cutoff at 1950. Meaning any player born after 1950 can only get a maximum age bonus of 15.
Some notes before the list:
Basically ignore the ranking for Monte Ward. Most of his value came as a pitcher and in an era vastly different than todays game. In fact the pitcher was a whole lot closer to home plate making it easier for pitchers. I could have seperated out the pitching years but decided not too. If I had he probably would have ranked around 35th or so just like Bill has him ranked. Also in the SS category 10 players lost playing time because of War. So i had to adjust there totals, some by as little as 1 and others by more than 6. ARod, Jeter, and Nomar have less than the 8 year consecutive in that part of the equation. This is because Nomar hasn't played 8 seasons, ARod because both his first two seasons were less than 70 games combined, and Jeters because his first season was only 15 games. So basically you have to take there rankings with a grain of salt.

Bell boys follow dad on baseball diamond
    By Larry Ward
    Staff Writer
It's only four letters long, but it's a big name in baseball. Nevertheless, Ahwatukee Little League all-star Brantley Bell unpretentiously carries the same name as his father, Jay, a 17-year major leaguer, an original Arizona Diamondback who scored the winning run in the D-Backs' 2001 World Series victory over the New York Yankees and is now manager Bob Melvin's bench coach. It may seem natural that Brantley, a member of the Ahwatukee 9- and 10-year-old all-stars who have gone through the District 13 tournament and state playoffs undefeated, and his 7-year-old brother, Brock, would be in baseball. "We tried to get them involved in other things too, like swimming, tennis, basketball and even horseback riding," their mother, Laura, said. "If they started playing baseball, we wanted them to want to and do it on their own without any pushing." He also takes piano lessons, as do his brother and sister, and has a shown an interest in the theater arts. But Brantley and Brock wanted to play baseball.
