I’M OFF
Hey pardner, Billy-Ball is off to Texas today. Do I sound like a cowboy? I’m heading to Dallas for a few days of work (which means I won’t be here for the next couple of days). As you know Dallas is known for quite a few things besides killing John Kennedy (the President, not the infielder for the Senators and Red Sox). Did you know that Shane Andrews is from Dallas? So are Cliff Cook, Dave Duncan, Jason Jennings (all those guys have double initials), Sam Horn, Ruppert Jones, Howie Reeds, Carl Warwick, both Mike Basciks, and Buddy Groom amongst others. My favorite Dallas born ballplayer is Mr. Cub, Ernie Banks, born January 31, 1931. I had the honor and pleasure of spending some time talking with Ernie at the hotel bar in Seattle at the All-Star Game a couple of years ago and I can assure you that everything you have heard about his enthusiasm and love for the game is still intact. To have played as well as he did during those awful years of the Cubs, truly indicates a love of the game. Banks was an incredible power hitter from 1955 to 1960, Banks hit more homers than anyone in the majors. In 1955 alone Banks hit a record five grand slam homers. Banks didn’t look like the massively strong power hitter that he was, but he had incredibly strong and quick wrists. While today he would certainly be placed among the great shortstops, if you are looking for a Banks equivalent, look at Alfonso Soriano.

hypertext narrative and baseball
hypertext narrative and baseball
The patterns and structures of hypertext narrative sometimes seem complex, and a few critics dismiss hypertext because it does not always fit into familiar dramatic structures. But hypertext's patterns are not confined to avant-garde experiments; the patterns that help us understand hypertext fiction are patterns we see in other large-scale narratives journalism, history, memoir, and technical writing. Farther afield from the friendly confines of literature, the narratives of sport are also large and complex. Perhaps the patterns of hypertext may seem less forbidding as we find them in the narratives of professional baseball. While pundits fret that television and new media somehow make the audience passive and inattentive, thoughtful observation reveals surprising scope and depth even in popular entertainment. Cycles are central to hypertext and to baseball. In hypertext fiction, the rhythms of recurrence created by intersecting link paths are perhaps the central feature.

SIGNONSANDIEGO 8:09 p.m. April 12, 2005 These may be trying times for baseball, but let's forget the "s" word for a minute (steroids, that is, and I won't say it again, promise) and remember that there are some pretty good players out there who are worth watching and who are virtual links to past generations of baseball greats. Statistically speaking, you've never seen anyone closer to Joe DiMaggio than St. Louis' Albert Pujols. Did you know that when you watch Colorado's Todd Helton, you're practically seeing the second coming of Stan Musial? Alex Rodriguez is, of course, a bigger, stronger Ernie Banks. And it's hard to look at Seattle's Richie Sexson and not flash back to big Frank Howard. Welcome to the stat clones:

Editor's Note
Of Weddings and Baseball
Weddings can make you think in unusual ways. Last month this father of the bride was flooded with a variety of emotions as he and his wife walked their firstborn down the aisle. Memories flew past at supersonic speeds, and there was a sharpening of the senses that made every second more intense and memorable. And right in the middle of all those images and emotions were thoughts of Minnie Minoso and Ernie Banks. Even in spirit these great Chicago baseball legends had no business being at my daughter’s wedding, but nonetheless there they were, and they just would not leave. Minnie Minoso, a Cuban immigrant who began playing baseball on sugar plantations, became fodder for parody and derision when he said, “Baseball has been very, very good to me.” Minoso’s heartfelt remarks—both the content and the accent—have been mocked time and again. Minoso came from poverty to fame and financial security while playing a game that gave him pleasure. As the first dark-skinned Hispanic in the major leagues, he understood the nature of gratitude, whereas those who mocked him showed that they knew little of struggle, and even less of thankfulness. At my daughter’s wedding, I felt an overwhelming sense of appreciation that I knew Minnie would understand. As we walked down the aisle, I noticed the beauty of the room we had rented, the simple eloquence of the flowers on either side of the minister, and the glow of the faces of all those in attendance. I thought briefly of the crowded apartments of my youth and of a father who worked no less than 10 hours a day. Love and appreciation are heady emotions, and when they mix their potency is magnified. The surrealistic memory of Minnie reminded me of the nature of gratitude. I said to myself, “Physical therapy has been very good to me,” not only because it has allowed me to earn an income to support a family and pay for a wedding, but because it has fed my soul.

HOME TICKETS SCHEDULE PLAYERS ... TEAM HISTORY Chicago Cubs Baseball History Chicago Cubs, professional baseball team and one of six teams in the Central Division of the National League (NL). Formerly called the White Stockings, Colts, and Orphans, the team plays at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois. The club is owned by Tribune Company and wears uniforms of red, white, and blue.
No major league team has continuously represented the same city longer than the Chicago Cubs and their predecessors, who date back to 1870. Chicago’s first star was Cap Anson, one of the premier batsman of the 19th century, who led the team to the first championship of the National League in 1876.
Chicago fielded many powerful teams from 1876 to 1910. In 1907 and 1908 the Cubs won consecutive World Series titles, but since then the team has established the longest championship drought in major league baseball. Through the decades many standouts have played in Chicago, including Hall of Fame members Ernie Banks, Kiki Cuyler, Rogers Hornsby, Ferguson Jenkins, Hack Wilson, and Billy Williams. Later stars included Andre Dawson, Ryne Sandberg, and Sammy Sosa.
The Chicago White Stockings club, the predecessor of the Cubs, was formed in 1870 to challenge the Cincinnati Red Stockings (now the Reds), baseball’s first professional team. The first professional league, the National Association, was founded the next year. Frustrated by players jumping from one team to another in search of higher pay, White Stockings president William Hulbert founded the National League in 1876 to provide regularly scheduled games, professional umpires, and better relations between players and owners. The team’s first manager was Albert Spalding, a star pitcher who left the game in 1878 to build his sporting goods company. Anson replaced Spalding and led the White Stockings to five NL titles during his first seven years as manager.
