Each hitter will fill exactly one spot in the lineup, according to the following conditions: Michael must bat fourth.
Cornelius must bat in some slot before that of David.
David must bat in some slot before that of Victor.
Jose cannot bat eighth.
Carlos must bat either immediately before or immediately after Michael. 1) If David has better plate discipline than Victor, Jose, and Kazuo, yet because Jose and Kazuo are speedy they must bat before him, what is the earliest slot in the lineup in which he could bat? A) Fifth
B) Eighth
C) Seventh
D) Sixth
E) Fourth 2) If Douglas gets on base more often than Kazuo and hits for more power than Kazuo, where does he bat? A) Seventh
B) Sixth
C) Fifth D) Eighth E) Bench Him 3) If a condition were added to the list of conditions such that prospects who fail to live up to their billing and display no ability whatsover to take a pitch to get on base must bat seventh or eighth, which is a complete list of all possible seventh and eighth hitters?

I'm not sure what this says about me, but my entire day was made when I got home from work and verified that the VCR had decided to accept my sacrificial offering of a DVD player in lieu of devouring my tape yet again, and had successfully recorded the afternoon Spring Training game.
Finally they got their transmission fixed or persuaded Ralph Kiner to wear pants, and I got to see most of an entertaining if not very satisfying ballgame. Here are my thoughts:
  • Reyes cracks a single early down the right field line and the ball rolls over into the expansive foul territory and warm-up mounds. He tries his patented move of stretching what is for anyone else a single into a no-doubter double, and fails because the right fielder - Franklin Gutierrez, I think - navigates the mounds, scoops the grounder cleanly, spins and uncorks a perfect bullet a step ahead of our hero. It took an amazing play to get him; that's how fast and aggressive Reyes is. I'm more awed than worried by his attempts. They provoke the same invigorating shock that a basestealer does when he starts his charge, and I hope he has the judgment for both moves.
  • Baldwin looked hittable yet not particularly horrible. He made some nice pitches, too. Shouldn't be a candidate for the fifth spot, even if the only qualification necessary to nail it down is looking hittable yet not particularly horrible.

    Ryan Dempster Chat
Florida Marlins' pitcher Ryan Dempster, from Sechelt, B.C., joined SLAM! Baseball online this evening to talk about baseball and the Florida Marlins. Review his answers in the transcript below. Dave What's it like playing in Florida? Ryan Dempster: I have to say that it is great place to pitch but a little humid at times. Since I came home the weather has not been too bad, because it has been sunny. KEN @ COMOX,BC YOU JUST MISSED A WORLD SERIES RING (1997), COMING UP IN 1998, WHAT DO YOU FEEL ARE THE CHANCES OF THE MARLINS BEING COMPETITIVE NEXT SEASON? IF YOU SEE ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT WHERE WOULD YOU MAKE THE CHANGES? Ryan Dempster: I think the chances are pretty good. We improved from last year quite a bit and I see us improving even more next season. I think that you can always use starting pitching, maybe another starter and the Marlins have been talking about going and getting a catcher. We have two great catchers but we did not get a lot of home runs out of that spot so maybe a more offensive catcher.

TennisOne, A few days ago, while watching the US Open, I caught the last few points of Marina's mixed doubles match. I was at first confused by the scoring, then outraged, when I realized what was happening. The match ended on a very sad, silly note - one measly point ending their chance in the end. As most club and recreational players (i.e., fans) are doubles players, I'm sure they enjoy watching great doubles teams at work. There is much that could be learned, there net duals can be incredibly exciting, and there is more of a fun and entertaining aspect to doubles as now played. On top of that, the scoring system would only serve to confuse people, especially those new to tennis, who have to use traditional scoring when they play. Well, I could go on, but your article basically says it all. At the end, Paul says "Doubles lovers of the world unite!" I think we should do just this. I think we should start petitions, letter writing campaigns - whatever we can think of, to encourage the ATP to drop this crazy idea. I am hoping that TennisOne and perhaps some other online sites and print magazines could get the ball rolling here. What do you say we start something!! Sincerely

After viewing the slide presentation that accompanies Agnes Harder's History of Brainerd with her and Edgar at the Remington H.S., I bid them farewell, carefully clutching the slides they had graciously agreed to loan me so I could make copies of them and return them the next day. I headed west on K-196 towards Wichita, stopping in Whitewater for a few minutes to drive up and down its wide, clean, but quiet Main Street , taking in the town's towering grain elevator and contemplating the difference a few miles of railroad track can make in a community's history. With the wind whipping my Honda from side to side along the narrow two-lane highway, I made it over to I-35 and headed south to Wichita, where I spent the night after dropping off the borrowed slides for overnight duplication at a local graphic service bureau. Before walking across the Arkansas River from my hotel to watch the first few innings of a wind-throttled Wichita Wranglers baseball game, I dialed the home of Jake Cornelius, a Brainerd resident whom Agnes suggested I contact to get another perspective on the whole affair. She had warned me that he was very busy and that I might have a hard time getting him on the phone. To my surprise, he answered on the first ring, and seemed to be expecting my call. We made plans to rendezvous at his house the next morning and "have a look around" what's left of Brainerd.

    Apocrypha in Pittsburgh
By David Marasco Baseball is about legends. The high point of the 1996 season was not Albert Belle's fifty homeruns or Greg Maddux's pitching prowess, but Cal Ripken breaking Lou Gehrig's famed streak. This appeal to myth was even more so behind the color line. One tall-tale has Josh Gibson hitting a ball out of Forbes Field only to be called out when it was caught the next day in Philadelphia. Not surprisingly, Satchel Paige as the Negro League's most famous player also stars in many such stories. One of these is recounted in his autobiography, "Maybe I'll Pitch Forever," One day I pitched a no-hitter for the Crawfords against the Homestead Grays. That was on July 4. I remember because somebody kept shooting off firecrackers every time I got another batter out. Those firecrackers still were popping when I ran out of the park, hopped into my car, and drove all night to Chicago. I got there in time to beat Jim Trent and the Chicago American Giants one to nothing in twelve innings. This seems more than a little unbelievable. A full nine innings followed by an all-night drive to be topped with a twelve-inning shutout? Even if one does believe in Paige's pitching abilities, his memory might not be trusted. His autobiography was written in 1962, and while that was only one year removed from his pitching for AAA Portland, it was nearly 30 years after the fact. Also to be considered is that the only Trent that played for the Chicago American Giants was Ted Trent. This calls for a little digging. Fortunately both Chicago and Pittsburgh had very active press corps in their African-American communities, so many pieces of this puzzle could be found.

Hoffman Could Play and Teach Baseball
I'm at my parents for my father's induction into the Huntingdon County (Pa.) Sports Hall of Fame. Here's the bio written by Terry Bowser of the Huntingdon Daily News: Edwin J. Hoffman learned the game of baseball on the sandlots of Saltillo. His ability eventually took him to Juniata College and on to professional baseball in the Cincinnati Reds' organization. Learning the game and being able to teach it are two entirely different skills, and Ed made the transition to become a highly successful baseball coach of 16 seasons at Huntingdon Area High School.

    April 9, 2004
"Take me out to the ballgame" is being heard all over the world as major league baseball starts another season. The same familiar tune will be heard at SUNY Fredonia from the Rockefeller Arts Center as the Department of Theatre and Dance wraps up another successful season with its rendition of the popular musical about baseball, Damn Yankees. Damn Yankees , with a score by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross and a book by George Abbott and Douglas Wallop, will perform in the Marvel Theatre the last two weekends of April. Performances are April 23, 24, 29, 30 and May 1 at 8 p.m. and April 25 at 2 p.m. A talk-back with the cast, designers and crew will be held following the Sunday matinee. Tickets are on sale at the Central Box Office in the Williams Center at 673-3501. The show's plot has been taken from two popular stories. The first is the Faust legend about an aging man who is so drawn to a young girl that he sells his soul to the devil in return for renewed youth. In the legend, the bargain works out poorly and everybody ends up dead, except for the devil. Roughly the same situation occurs-but more happily this time-in a novel by Douglass Wallop called
