Survey Hardball at its finest Pieces of the Past column by Jim Reis The traditionof baseball runs strong in Northern Kentucky with the old professional Covington Blue Sox, the Newport Brewers and many semi-pro teams. Often overlooked are the teams from Ludlow. Over the years Ludlow's baseball teams - such as the Ludlow White Sox, the Ludlow Giants and the Ludlow American Legion - would compete annually for local and regional league championships. In fact, in 1875 one Ludlow team played a two-game series against the Cincinnati Reds and a game against the Boston Red Sox. By most accounts, the first baseball team organized in Ludlow was in 1874. The baseball club awarded a contract to Cuthbert and Co. to grade a ball field. The old ball field occupied the site where Caple Park is now located. The ball field, with its ''fine view of the Ohio River,'' was to be ready for use in May 1875. The Ludlow team took on all challengers and traveled, playing in Louisville in May 1875 and throughout Cincinnati.

Baseball Arrives in Holland:
A history of the origins of baseball in Holland, Michigan by Michael Van Beek Events like this help define the rich history of Holland baseball. Although this type of boisterous event in the Holland versus Ionia game proved rather rare, the story of baseball in Holland in the late 19th and early 20th centuries is certainly a tale worth telling. The Holland Sentinel claimed in its obituary of “Java” VerSchure (one of the early Holland baseball enthusiasts) that “Holland’s baseball history is a story in itself; in fact, it is outstanding...” However, even though this story might be outstanding, the development of baseball in Holland was a problematic matter. Indeed, there were many failed attempts at putting together a successful team and a relating positive baseball atmosphere before anything permanent could be established in Holland in the early 20th century. In fact, the financial support was significant enough that Holland gave birth to many other teams in the 1899 season. A team rather similar to the Holland City Base Ball Club was founded. The City News gave details of several games between the Holland City Base Ball Club and the this newly formed team called the Holland Independents. Apparently, the Independents were not of the same caliber as the Holland City Base Ball Club, because they lost 12-1 in what was called the championship game for the city. Besides the rival games between these two city teams, Holland also witnessed many more recreational games between teams representing different businesses in 1899. In addition to the printers versus cigarmakers game that actually continued throughout the lackluster four year period of baseball before 1899, Holland saw businessmen battle clerks and farmers, and the workers of 7th Street play the workers of 8th Street.

TOP RETURNING PLAYERS: Norberto Navarro, Sr., C/P; Willie Rogers, Sr., SS; Blaise Simon, Sr., 1B/P/OF; Kevin Fagan, Sr., P/1B; Tony Gironda, Sr., DH; Brandon Decker, Jr., 3B; Kyle Trouton, So., P; Cory Paterson, So., CF; Steve Mattia, Jr., 2B/P. TOP NEWCOMERS: Steve Krajnk, Jr., OF/P; Bobby Brunda, Jr., OF. OUTLOOK: If inexperience was a factor in nearly a dozen close losses last season, the Bucs should be much-improved with eight players, including seven starters, back. Five seniors who took their lumps as freshmen and sophomores lead the way. Fagan, who pitched a no-hitter against Zephyrhills as a sophomore, is back at full strength after missing two months last season with a shoulder injury. Navarro should do some spot starting and close games behind Fagan and Trouton. HUDSON COACH: Vince Ferlita (first season)

Thousands of persons had seen the play, but only one of them, a man 80-odd years old, had seen it correctly. Connie got the name of the umpire wrong, mistaking Joe Rue for Bill Grieve, but he got the play right. Later on, though, he was discovered upbraiding himself for helping out the arbiter.

    (3) The corporate seal of the American Baseball Club of Philadelphia (1913), which still gives a very nice imprint.
    (5) The stock transfer ledger for the Ottawa Baseball Club, Ltd.
    (6) The stock certificate book from 1952 of the Ottawa Baseball Club, Ltd., with share certificates signed by Earle and Roy McGillicuddy.
Needless to say, these books and records are full of priceless signatures of Shibes and McGillicuddys, and they help to tell through the corporate dealings a good part of the off-the-field history of the Philadelphia Athletics. Somewhere, we presume, are the minute books of the two American Baseball Club of Philadelphia corporations, the one from 1901, the other 1913, but even without them these artifacts and records tell quite a story themselves.

A Life in the Negro Leagues

Ivan R. Dee, 2000 Buy the book from Chapter 3 N othing sullies the remembrance of Josh's golden moments as witnessed by fellow Negro-league performers. Buck Leonard remembers a game against Leon Day and the Newark Eagles in which the Grays were behind, 2-1. When a runner got on first, Leonard sacrificed him to second, one of the few times the hard-hitting Leonard ever bunted. Josh could tie the game with a single, so Day bore down on him. He got two strikes past Josh and prepared to set him up for a third. Again, Josh was the kind of hitter, as his teammates insist to this day, who never worried about two strikes on him. He didn't shorten up or widen his stance. He believed he could hit anything in any situation, and simply had the confidence he would. Day wound up and threw a tough two-strike pitch, a fast curveball on the outside of the plate, and Josh nailed it over the scoreboard in center field. It was a blast which not only broke up the ball game but which had people slapping their foreheads in disbelief. "He was that kind of power hitter," Leonard said. "Nobody knows how far that ball went that day." Or the time Jack Marshall saw him commit himself too soon and almost strike out on a sucker pitch. Almost. For as Marshall remembers it, Sonny Cornelius was pitching for the American Giants against the Grays at Victory Field in Indianapolis, Indiana. Cornelius threw Josh a good slow curve and fooled him completely. Josh took his short stride, shifted his weight as much as he ever did, and began his swing. He brought his left arm across his body, but halted the motion at the sight of Cornelius's tantalizing slow curve, let go of the bat with his left hand, and with only his right hand gripping the handle, swatted at the ball as if he were going after a horsefly. The drive carried 375 feet and out of the park. Josh circled the bases, unable to contain a smile; Sonny Cornelius shook his head.

One month into the season, the Marlins finally have their
rotation intact. How much did they miss injured righthanders
Chuck Smith and A.J. Burnett? If their respective starts last
week were an indication of things to come, the Marlins could

    DECEMBER 29, 2000
Righthander Manny Aybar is a wild card for the fifth
starting spot in the Marlins' rotation next year.
The former Cardinals prospect was 1-0 with a 2.63 ERA
in 21 appearances out of the bullpen last season. And he
hasn't started a game since 1999. But he has pitched
impressively during winter ball, compiling a 4-2 record and
2.94 ERA in the Dominican League numbers that have caught the attention of Marlins brass looking for a quality arm to fill the final spot in the starting rotation. The first four spots will go to righthanders Ryan Dempster, Chuck Smith, Brad Penny and A.J. Burnett.
