66. Baseball Musings: Guillen's Zimmer
He has a brilliant baseball mind but, like Guillen, never has run games. harold baines, who serves as a specialassignment instructor,
http://www.baseballmusings.com/archives/006240.php
Main March 20, 2004 Guillen's Zimmer Joe Nossek was supposed to be Ozzie Guillen's bench coach . He was going to be Zimmer to Guillen's Torre; the guy who would whisper in the manager's ear to remind him of strategy and personnel changes. But Nossek is gone for health reasons, and the White Sox are scrambling for a replacement:
Guillen indicated he wants to stay within the White Sox "family." The most logical choice is Jeff Torborg, who managed the Sox in 1989-91 and was Guillen's boss with Montreal in 2001 and Florida in 2002 and part of `03. Torborg might not know the American League like Nossek_no one does_but the former catcher has managed almost 1,400 big-league games and watched perhaps another 1,400 as a broadcaster. Carlton Fisk, who talks about getting back into baseball as a manager or coach, would be a big risk-big reward type of hire. He has a brilliant baseball mind but, like Guillen, never has run games. Is there anything Guillen could do that would be more popular with the fans? It's true Fisk and Reinsdorf are not on good terms, but Reinsdorf probably could fix that with a one phone call (albeit a long phone call). Fisk's presence on the bench would be huge. He certainly could tutor Miguel Olivo and probably help the pitching staff along the way. He has said he's not sure if he wants to tackle the grind of a 162-game season, but this would be a chance to take the job for a test drive.

J erry Reinsdorf, the chairman of the board of the Chicago White Sox since 1981, issued an ultimatum to Chicago in 1988: build the team a new ballpark or the franchise would move to St. Petersburg, Florida. On May 7, 1989, ground was broken for the new Comiskey Park, now known as U.S. Cellular Field, a $167-million stadium built across the street from its predecessor 79 years after the cornerstone had been laid for the original ballpark. It was the first new baseball-only stadium built in the American League since 1973. Designed to hold 44,321 fans, the new ballpark produced the franchise single-season attendance record (2,934,154) in its first year.

Sammy Sosa at bat in September 2000 at Busch Stadium Samuel Peralta Sosa , better known as Sammy Sosa (born November 12 in San Pedro de Macorís Dominican Republic ), is a professional Major League baseball player for the Chicago Cubs . Sosa ended the season with 574 career home run s, placing him seventh on the major leagues' all-time home run list
1 Early Life
Sammy Sosa's family was very poor and he grew up in an abandoned hospital. He started playing baseball at a young age, and at times used a folded milk carton for a glove as he could not afford a real one. His talent was apparent at a young age, so much so that the Philadelphia Phillies attempted to sign him at age 15, but this deal was not allowed by Major League Baseball because of a rule making the minimum age for contracts between major league teams and players 16. After turning 16, he signed with the Texas Rangers in 1985.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Harold Douglass Baines (born March 15 in Easton, Maryland ) is a former right fielder and designated hitter in Major League Baseball who played in the American League from to , and is best known for his three stints with the Chicago White Sox . His 1,628 career runs batted in rank 10th in AL history. Baines began his career with the White Sox as the number-one pick in the amateur draft in , after being spotted by then-White Sox owner Bill Veeck while playing Little League ball at the age of 12. In 1980 the smooth-swinging 20-year-old became a regular outfielder on the team, and began to produce in when he had 165 hits home runs and 105 RBIs. He ended the longest game in major league history (eight hours and six minutes over 25 innings on successive evenings) with his home run against the Milwaukee Brewers Chuck Porter on May 9 ; the bat he used is currently kept at the Baseball Hall of Fame . He also led the AL in slugging percentage in 1984. In , a succession of knee problems began which would gradually end his fielding career, forcing him to become a regular designated hitter. Despite the knee ailments and the resulting lack of speed, however, he remained a powerful hitter, picking up 166 hits in Midway through the season, the
