Baines replaces Canseco on AL All-Star team
Click here for more on this story Posted: Monday July 12, 1999 01:18 AM Jed Jacobsohn/Allsport BOSTON (AP) Baltimore Orioles designated hitter Harold Baines replaced ailing AL home run leader Jose Canseco of Tampa Bay on the American League All-Star team Sunday. Baines, one of the steadiest hitters in the game but also one of the least talkative, was pretty nonchalant about making his sixth All-Star team. "I'm not into that history stuff," Baines said after the Orioles beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-2 Sunday. "I'm just glad to make the team." Canseco, who leads the AL with 31 home runs, had back surgery Sunday to repair a herniated disc and is out indefinitely. "There's a distinct possibility he will play this year," Devil Rays manager Larry Rothschild said. "We've had a lot of injuries this season, but obviously this is a big one. There's nothing we can do about it." The 40-year-old Baines is having one of his best seasons in years, batting .345 with 19 home runs and 63 RBIs. His career-high in homers is 29, set in 1984 with the Chicago White Sox "It's nice they called me," Baines said. "But I won't feel a special moment until I get there."

HAROLD BAINES
Harold Baines was one of the most popular players in Chicago White Sox history, spending parts of 14 seasons and three stints with the southsiders. He was scouted personally by Bill Veeck when he was still in Little League, gaining attention with his perfect swing from the left-side of the batters' box. Baines was robbed by work stoppages, missing close to one full season of games due to strikes, which left him 134 hits shy of the magical 3,000 mark. Because of that fact and his more than 1,600 games as a designated hitter, Baines faces an uphill battle toward Cooperstown.

SAMMY SOSA
Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire captivated the nation during their Home Run Chase of 1998, which ended with Sammy at 66 and McGwire at 70. It was the first of four straight seasons of 50 or more homers for Sosa, who has topped the 60 mark three times. The likable Sosa won the 1998 National League Most Valuable Player Award and grew to become a huge fan favorite, not only in Chicago, but throughout America and in his home country, the Dominican Republic.
In the first game played by the Cubs after the terrible events of September 11, 2001, Sosa belted a home run and carried a small U.S. flag around the bases. His trademark hop and his kiss and heart-touching ritual after hitting a home run, have been imitated by kids all over the globe. Thanks to his infectious smile and positive attitude, Sosa has become the greatest ambassador of the game since Cal Ripken Jr. Early in 2003, Sosa became the first Latin American player, and only the 18th overall, to hit 500 home runs.
Nicknames
Sosa seems like the type of player who would have a popular nickname, but he doesn't. He's simply known by all as "Sammy."
