Carlos Baerga: Future Candidate By Don Ketchum, The Arizona Republic July 13, 2003
Carlos Baerga is keeping himself busy these days as a reserve infielder and the primary pinch-hitter for the Diamondbacks. During the winter, he stays busy as an owner of the Bayamon Vaqueros in his native Puerto Rico. Baerga hopes to keep busy in the future as an owner or front-office executive in the major leagues. "I believe I can help in Major League Baseball in many ways," he said. "I have a big interest in it. Some people have told me I would make a good general manager some day." He knows it won't be easy. He said he has spoken to fellow Hispanic players who have similar aspirations. "I think we (Hispanics) are getting more and more opportunities every day," Baerga said. "Look at Omar Minaya (general manager of the Montreal Expos). "If you give 100 percent in everything you do, on the field and off, most of the time, something good is going to happen. "We don't have all the answers. But we have a lot of good ideas. We have been playing the game a long time. It's a matter of learning, learning from the people who are already there and learning from each other." Baerga has taken young Diamondbacks infielder Alex Cintron, a fellow Puerto Rican, under his wing. Baerga said he enjoys being a mentor to the young Hispanic players.

Puerto Rico: Baseball's Hot Corner In The Winter
By Gabrielle Paese
November 1, 2002
Winter baseball season is upon us. "Play ball!" was heard in three Puerto Rican league ballparks Wednesday night as the 2002-2003 season officially got underway with six teams. There's nothing like winter league baseball in the Caribbean. For one tenth of what it would cost you to watch a major league game in the states you can get choice seating, players' autographs and a pina colada. What takes place on the field is as unpredictable as the weather (usually rain, rain and more rain). Last season, the Bayamon Vaqueros won the league title with an unemployed major league infielder named Carlos Baerga at second base. Baerga performed so well for the team he bought three years ago that he earned himself a job with the Boston Red Sox for the 2002 season. Once again this season, the league offers a pleasant mix of veterans and rookies, making for still better drama than you'll see at any Triple A ballgame. But enough of waxing poetic, here's a quick peek into the upcoming season.

I understand that as a rookie, Swoboda hit homers in his first four official at-bats. Is this correct? Armando Ruiz Flushing, N.Y. It never happened, although Swoboda did hit 19 home runs in his rookie season while playing in 112 games with the Mets in 1965.

MLB FOREIGN EXPANSION by Craig Tomarkin It all started when the Montreal Expos debuted in 1969. They made their first and only post season appearance in strike shortened 1981, with a 60-48 record. Andre Dawson and Gary Carter were the team's hitting stars and they managed to beat the Phillies three games to two in the opening playoff series. In Game 5, Steve Rogers pitched a shut out for them against Steve Carlton to win it. They were unable to outlast the Dodgers in the next series though as Fernando Valensuela allowed only 3 hits in 8 2/3 innings to beat them 2-1 in a thrilling come from behind Game 5 victory. As of 2002, we are still waiting for them to make a World Series appearance. The Toronto Blue Jays were the second foreign team to join the MLB in 1977. Again, a team from Canada. This franchise proved to be stronger than the Expos. They first made the playoffs in 1985 and again in 1989. The team soon became a force, making the playoffs three straight years from 1991 to 1993. The last two seasons they won back to back World Series, establishing them as the first foreign team to build an MLB dynasty. Who will follow as the next foreign team? Will it be another team from Canada or will another country step to the plate?

The Commissioner 02-03-2003, 07:28 AM Still whenever you can add a guy like Baerga, or like Toronto did with Bordick, as your backup it's just a nice little insurance policy to have. Plus, Baerga has always been a great person in general and having his presence in the clubhouse can only be a plus. Obri 02-04-2003, 06:02 AM Baerga does seem to be an infectious guy, and that kind of good aura in the clubhouse is useful. cooldeafguy 04-10-2003, 03:06 PM All I can say is a backup player is better than no backup players at all unless the player is unfortunely named John Rocker...haha :laugh 04-12-2003, 12:17 PM

From the Gut
by Lenny Melnick
My first sleeper pick was Benito Santiago, a great new name in 1987.  Of course, I discovered the San Diego catcher in Bill Mazeroski's Baseball Magazine, but the name Benito Santiago was much too good of a sound to pass up.  I just had a feeling.  In 1987, only a handful of books and magazines were published.  Baseball web sites were non-existent, fantasy baseball on television or radio was not to be found, and I had to go to 42nd Street in Manhattan to get the out-of-town newspapers.
The "expert" evaluations we rely on today were somewhat hard to find, and getting inside information we currently read daily in USA Today was REAL work. Let's face it: when you read in a magazine that Benito Santiago is a catcher who can steal bases, or that Kenny Williams is the next Rickey Henderson, or Brent Gates is the second coming of Ryne Sandberg, you get blown away, and hope that your competition will overlook the magazine you just read.
Due to the sparse sources of information ion the 1980's, we often practiced that art of watching the player with our own eyes and making our own evaluations. Often opinions were formulated on nothing more than a look, a hunch, a gut feeling or just the sound of a player's name (as in Benito Santiago).  After all, any astute baseball analyst would know that Mickey Klutts would never be a player because he coudn't field, or that Mark Grace had no power or that Butch Huskey would.
In the spring of 1987, I saw Bobby Bonilla and Mike Greenwell.  Bonilla was a six foot three inch, 210 pound switch-hitter. He had just been traded to the Pirates from the White Sox.  Without easy access to expert evaluations, most members of my league didn't know the difference between Bobby Bonilla, up and coming star, and Juan Bonilla, former Padre, Oriole and Yankee.  I drafted Bobby Bonilla for $3.00. Results: .300 BA, 15 HR and 77 RBI.

Possibly the most popular player in Blue Jays' history, Joe Carter helped Toronto to the post-season in his first three seasons with the team. In Game Six of the 1993 World Series at the Skydome, Carter blasted a three-run home run to deliver Toronto's second straight World Series championship. A consistent run-producer, he drove in 100 or more runs ten times, reached 30 homers six times, and became baseball's highest paid player.

"Century Man" would have been good, since he drove in 100 or more runs 10 times in 12 years.

Hernandez throws 145 pitches in 91-degree heat; Cordero gets 35th save
MIAMI - Livan Hernandez barely trotted out of the batters' box after grounding out to short in the second inning. He ambled slowly up the baseline after hitting a run-scoring single three innings later. Clearly, he was saving his strength for his duties on the mound. The right-hander allowed a season-high 11 hits and threw 145 pitches over eight tough innings, willing the Washington Nationals past the Florida Marlins 4-2 on Sunday to end a season-high six-game losing streak. "Maybe now the team will come back and play better," Hernandez said. "We've got two months of baseball left." Nick Johnson hit a solo homer in the ninth inning and drove in two runs for the Nationals, who avoided a three-game sweep and remained five games behind Atlanta in the NL East. "If you win one in each series, they can only pick up a game on you," Nationals manager Frank Robinson said. "The big swing is the three-game deal. That's why just a little bit of margin can be the difference." Hernandez (13-4), who won for the first time in his last five starts, was a workhorse in 91-degree heat against the team he helped win the 1997 World Series. He had just one perfect inning, and found ways to strand nine baserunners along the way.

Armas and Nationals stop Astros
July 24, 2005 Tony Armas allowed one hit in seven innings and the slumping Washington Nationals capitalized on Willy Taveras's misplay of Carlos Baerga's bases-loaded fly ball to center in the first inning to beat the Houston Astros, 4-2, last night at RFK Stadium. Taveras came in on the ball, then retreated as it sailed over his head. The three-run double gave the Nationals all the runs they needed to break a three-game skid and win for just the fifth time in 17 games. Armas (5-4) allowed just a two-run homer by Lance Berkman in the sixth to help end the Astros' six-game winning streak. Joey Eischen came on to give up a single to Orlando Palmeiro to start the eighth, but Gary Majewski finished the inning, and Chad Cordero pitched the ninth for his 34th save, ensuring Washington will spend another day no worse than tied for first with Atlanta in the East Division. Brandon Backe (8-7) walked Brad Wilkerson to start the first, then gave up Jose Guillen's ground-rule double into the left-field corner. Preston Wilson walked on four pitches with two outs to load the bases and bring up Baerga, who entered the game with just 10 RBIs and was for 4 with the bases loaded. Mets 7, Dodgers 5
