Cabrera coming back?
August 30, 2004 Boston Globe baseball scribe Gordon Edes weighs in on the Olde Towne Team in this edition of the Ask Edes mailbag. ADVERTISEMENT Regarding the future shortstop situation, I think it would be smart for the Sox to send Cabrera to arbitration, and get a 1 or 2 year deal done. At the end of his contract, Hanley Ramirez will probably be ready. Also, what are the chances for Youkilis for AL Rookie of the Year? Dan, Andover A: Why do you consider the wild-card to have been a "successful innovation"? We'll never again see a pennant race between two great teams (see Joe Sheehan's recent piece in baseballprospectus.com, which expresses what a lot of fans I know have been saying). It may have been good for the Red Sox, but that's not the same as "good for baseball" (and anyway it's dramatically lowered the stakes in all Yankee/Red Sox races). Steve, New York, NY A: How close are the figures between Sox management and Pedro Martinez, Jason Varitek, and Derek Lowe? Do you see the Sox going after any higher-profile free agents like Edgar Renteria, Carl Pavano, and Carlos Beltran in the offseason? George, Schenectady

The National Baseball Hall of Fame Our affiliation with the National Baseball Hall of Fame continues in its fourth year as sponsor of Baseball As America Boggs Goes In a Red Sox, Sandberg a Cub Ryne Sandberg, 45, never achieved the illusive championship it took Boggs 15 years to earn, but he knows something about Gold Gloves, having won nine in a row. His fielding percentage at second base of .989 is the highest of anyone playing more than 800 games there. For seven full years out of his 16 big league seasons, Sandberg never made a single throwing error. Similarities in Career Paths Two young men from opposite sides of the country taking such similar paths to success, both infielders, both strong hitters and strong fielders, both dedicated to the game from childhood. What else did they have in common that resulted in their becoming the dominant players of their era at what they did? Sandberg Describes Defining Moment: 5 for 6, 7 RBI

by Bryan yesterday , trying to discredit Joe Mauer based on his height. I am going to e-mail Joe my comments, but a great rebuttal on this argument is made by Aaron Gleeman today. But like most breakout players, Willis has his skeptics. Dontrelle saw his ERA fall to 3.30 after a second half in which his earned run average was 4.60. He started to allow more home runs, walks, and hits, trends that scare away most fantasy owners. But the reason to hope with Willis is his age, since last year was only his age 21 season. Last year Dontrelle became the fourteenth southpaw in the last 80 years to have twelve or more wins while being twenty-one. The group, chronologically, with their ERA+: Curt Simmons- 1950- 120

Avery was one of the best young left-handers in the NL at the beginning of the Nineties but has not had an ERA under 4.00 nor pitched 200 innings since 1993. By the way, former teammates Greg Maddux and Avery were both born on April 14. Maddux is 4 years older. And Maddux has a 182 more career wins. Both made it to the majors at age 20. Through age 23 Avery led Maddux, 50 to 45 in wins. Posted on May 9, 2003 at 4:12 PM

    John Manuel's Prospect Pulse
How The Sausage Is Made: Inside The Ranking Process by John Manuel
March 4, 2005 Baseball America has been putting Top 100 Prospects lists together since 1990, when Steve Avery graced the top of our first list. Just over one year later, Avery was winning a National League Championship Series MVP, and he won 47 games from 1991-93 as the Braves began their still-unbroken string of division titles. He was, in other words, a deciding factor in helping his team win championships. That’s the essence of an elite prospect. While Avery’s career took a path few anticipated—early highs followed by a sudden loss of arm strength and drawn-out period of dwindling returns—he fit exactly the profile the Braves had set out for him. He was a front-of-the-rotation power pitcher, and only John Smoltz surpassed him as a big-game pitcher for Atlanta. Players with a peak value like Avery, short career and all, are what scouts look for in the draft, what organizations look for in their farm systems, and what Baseball America looks for when it compiles its Top 100 Prospects list. The goal of teams is to win championships, and when ranking prospects, we seek out players who can help their teams do that.
