Indians, Reds favorites for World Series, Sox, Cubs, not yet ready for prime time

Many questions have to be answered. Will the Indians continue to dominate the American League Central? Can the Red Sox finally catch the Yankees? Does the addition of Ken Griffey Jr. elevate the previously low budget Reds to contenders? And, oh yea, will either the White Sox or Cubs give fans a reason to follow them in September?
According to my calculations (they are pretty reliable, trust me), the Yankees, Indians, and Mariners will all win their divisions in the American League, and the Blue Jays will make the playoffs via the wild card. In the National League, the Braves, Reds, and Diamondbacks will all win their respective divisions, with the Mets taking the wild card spot. The World Series will come down to the Indians and Reds, with the Tribe winning in six.
By the end of summer, or maybe even in the next couple months, we will know the answers. However, for now, here is how I think each team will fair.
AL East
New York Yankees

With a pitching rotation that includes Roger Clemens, Orlando Hernandez, David Cone and Andy Pettite, it will be no surprise if the Yankees tear through the American League on their way to their third straight World Series. They have an explosive line-up that is as tough one-through-five as any in baseball, and they have a bullpen that can shut down opponents in the late innings. With Ramiro Mendoza and Mariano Rivera finishing games, a seventh inning lead will usually become a win. The Yanks should win the AL East and will be the odds on favorites to repeat as World Series Champs. With a payroll reaching nearly 82 million, there is no excuse not to.

Which Batteries (Catchers and Pitchers) tended to start together? The below data includes all games played 1969-2003, as well as 1963 and 1965-1968 for the A.L. Batteries selected according to the formula (M - P * C / T) >= 10, where T = team games, P = games started by the pitcher, C = games started by the catcher, and M = mutual starts by the pitcher and catcher. In essence, any battery which started together 10 more times than would have been expected if their individual starts had been distributed randomly is considered to include a personal catcher.

Move Over
Mario Mendoza I f 2003 turns out to be the year the Chicago Cubs win the World Series, that's one thing. If it's the Boston Red Sox, that's a seriously big deal too. Obviously. 58 saves for Eric Gagne would be something, as would 660 home runs or a sixth MVP for Barry Bonds. Yeah, sure, Roger Clemens hanging it up is kinda memorable and everything about the Detroit Tigers is cool, but Mario Mendoza has been waiting for company for a long long time, and now that he's getting it, it's big news. So the guy hit .215 lifetime. BFD. Lots of shortstops hit .215 lifetime. Juan Castro's made a career out of hitting .215 lifetime (.211 actually,) and gets credit for being a "slick fielding shortstop" when he's really not just because compared to his bat, his glove looks freaking awesome. (Shortstops are all too often considered great glove men for this reason, but that's another column. A boring column, no doubt, but another one.) Anyway.

Monday, 12 September 2005 2002 National League The Giants rode Barry Bonds' broad back to 95 wins, a Wild Card playoff berth, and the NL pennant.  Arizona won 98 to take the West, St. Louis 97 to win the Central, and Atlanta led the league with 101 victories in winning the East.  Los Angeles was the other strong team, with 92 victories.  On the flip side, Milwaukee lost 106, San Diego 96, and Chicago 95. Barry Bonds won the MVP, the batting title, led in walks, on-base (a ridiculous .582), slugging and OPS, and runs created.  Sammy Sosa led in homers and runs, Lance Berkman in RBI, Vlad Guerrero in hits, Bobby Abreu in doubles, and Luis Castillo in steals.  Randy Johnson won the pitching Triple Crown with leads in wins, ERA and strikeouts, and won the Cy Young.  John Smoltz led in saves. Park, who signed a five-year, $65 million contract in the off-season, will be counted on as the No. 1 starter of a pedestrian staff. Though Park posted solid numbers in his career, his best work always came at Dodger Stadium, where his career record was 42-24 with a 2.98 ERA. It will be interesting to see how he will adjust to the sauna-like Texas heat. But with fastballs that routinely approach the mid-90s, few can deny his physical talent. How quickly, too, times have changed- who would imagine it would only take one player to change the collective baseball ideology in Asia. Second reason: the Dodgers failed to snatch Suzuki last year. The Mariners outbid the Dodgers by paying $13.125 million to the Blue Wave to negotiate with Suzuki, then soon after, the right-fielder signed a three-year contract worth over $14 million, which is a hefty bargain in the major leagues for his services.

A Great Example of Pitch-by-Pitch Strategy
Tom Tippett
October 14, 1998 In game 5 of the National League Championship Series between the Padres and Braves, a critical situation arose in the top of the fourth inning. The Braves were trailing 2-1, and a pair of singles had put men on first and third with one out. John Smoltz, the Braves starting pitcher, was due up. The Braves, who were down three games to one and facing elimination, had to decide whether to let Smoltz bat or go with a pinch hitter. That decision was fairly easy. As pitchers go, Smoltz has been a better-than-average hitter the last couple of years, and it didn't make sense to pull an often-dominant pitcher this early in the game with only one out in the inning. Especially when the bullpen has been Atlanta's achilles heel all season. OK, so Smoltz is coming to the plate. If you're managing the Braves, what do you do? Do you let him swing away, risking an inning-ending double play? Do you ask Smoltz to sacrifice the runner to second, holding the runner at third, putting two men in scoring position for your leadoff hitter? Do you have him put down a squeeze bunt? If it's going to be a squeeze, do you use the suicide squeeze (where the runner breaks from third when the pitcher begins his motion) or the safety squeeze (where the runner waits to see the ball in play before breaking for home)?
