1999 Post-Season Review Kansas City Royals
By Tom Tippett
January 11, 2000 This article takes a look at how the Kansas City Royals did in the 1999 season relative to preseason expectations. For an overview of the approach used in this review, and a definition of some of the key terms and statistics, please see the overview page called 1999 Team-by-Team Performance Reviews
Capsule Summary
Projected Actual Runs for 780 856 Runs allowed 849 921 Run Margin -69 -65 Wins 74 64 Pythagorean wins 74 75 Placement 3rd 4th Sometimes, the final standings can be a little deceiving. In 1998, the Royals won 72 games and finished third in the division. But they were second-last in the AL in both runs scored and runs allowed, and they were outscored by 185 runs, easily the worst differential in the league. Not surprisingly, they also lost far more games (41) by five or more runs than any other team in baseball. If it wasn't for a 17-16 record on one-run games, Kansas City would have finished in the basement. Then Jose Offerman and Dean Palmer, their two best offensive players, left as free agents, and there were widespread reports that they needed to cut payroll even further and would therefore trade their best pitcher, Kevin Appier, before the season. So there didn't seem to be a lot of reason to be optimistic about 1999. Or did there?

Projecting the 1999 Season An Update
By Tom Tippett
April 2, 1999 Three weeks ago, we completed the process of developing projected 1999 statistics and ratings for over 1400 players and running a series of computer simulations of the upcoming season. At that time, we published an article that presented our predicted 1999 standings and talked about the outlook for all thirty teams. But much has happened since then. We've learned that Kerry Wood, Matt Morris, and Kerry Ligtenberg will miss the season with injuries. That Gary Disarcina's broken arm isn't healing as quickly as first hoped. That some veteran players have been released and a few others have retired. That Orel Hershiser exercised his option to join another team (the Mets) when it became clear he wouldn't be in the Indians rotation. And so on. So we thought it would be fun to run another 20 simulations of the 1999 season using the latest rosters and injury information. This article presents the updated standings and throws in a few observations about the post-season and the MVP, Cy Young, and Rookie of the Year awards as well. If you're interested in learning more about how we developed the player projections, check out the page titled

After a 13-win campaign the next year, tied for the team best, he was the opening day starter in 1992 and posted a 15-8 record with the league's second-best ERA (2.46) for a team that only went 72-90. A Quarter of A Billion Dollars That’s right, Alex Rodriguez signed the most lucrative deal in sports history, getting $252 million for 10 years from the Texas Rangers. The Rangers stepped up and took the big gamble, adding youth and slugging to a team with older sluggers Rafael Palmeiro and Ivan Rodriguez. But still, that’s just over ¼ of a billion dollars. That’s billion with a B! Like the political pundit once said, you keep talking about billions and billions of dollars and eventually we’re talking about some real money. Yes, Rodriguez is young, averaged more than 40 home runs per year in his short career, and now, he is, by far, the richest player in baseball history. In fact, his deal is so large, he will be paid more than the estimated worth of nearly one third of baseball teams. It brings to mind the two old questions: is anyone worth that much money; and how much can you spend? Let’s start on the first question.

Appier, Wohlers making news this spring
Kevin Appier has been attracting attention all spring. Now the attention is truly justified. The Kansas City right-hander is close to being the pitcher he was when he was rated among the best in the American League. The arm problems that sidelined him last season appear to be a piece of his past. He has been throwing in the 84-86 range, which would not be satisfactory during the season, but is a good step toward getting back to 90 which is his top at his best. The Cleveland Indians have been especially interested. It looks as if the St. Louis Cardinals will be their principal competition.

Sunday, December 10, 2000 Baseball meeting roundup Exec blasts Hampton deal; Mets turn attention to Appier

By RONALD BLUM
AP Sports Writer
Hampton's record $121 million, eight-year contract was formally announced Saturday, a deal that left other teams scrambling for second-tier pitchers such as Darren Dreifort and Kevin Appier. The New York Mets talked to Appier's agents Saturday and were to meet again Sunday. Appier appeared to be leaning toward the Mets, though Baltimore was still in the chase. As the meetings neared the completion of their second day, there still hadn't been a single trade. In the only other major news Saturday, catcher Todd Hundley reached a preliminary agreement on a $23.5 million, four-year contract with his hometown Chicago Cubs. He then criticized Hampton for saying he made the decision because of family. To him, it was another instance of a team giving in to a player. Rodriguez and Ramirez, the top two position players in this year's free-agent class, figure to get even more, possibly breaking the $200 million barrier.
