Angels' outfielder Garret Anderson belted a grand slam in the 11th inning Tuesday night.
ARLINGTON, Texas - Garret Anderson did exactly what he wanted to do with the bases loaded in the 11th inning, and extended the Los Angeles Angels' winning streak in the process. After the Texas Rangers intentionally walked Vladimir Guerrero to load the bases with none out, Anderson hit a ball in the air. It landed in the stands for a grand slam, giving the Angels their eighth straight victory, 5-1 on Tuesday night. "Just don't hit the ball on the ground, that's about as much as I thought of right there," said Anderson, whose seventh career slam was his first since May 8, 2003. "I looked for a fastball to hit. Fortunately, he left it in a spot I could get it up in the air." Anderson pulled an 0-1 pitch from left-hander Brian Shouse into the first row of seats in right.

Pete Rozelle Killed Baseball

By Bryan Curtis
Posted Monday, June 24, 2002, at 1:59 PM PT
Writing in the Boston Globe Magazine , Charles P. Pierce argues that baseball's turning point came when NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle used television to turn football into the new national pastime: "Meanwhile, baseball clung to its past the way a dowager clings to the family furs, refusing to acknowledge that it needed to compete as an entertainment entity in the modern era." The sport is being destroyed not by its economics but by its profound indifference to changes in American culture. The problem is "a fundamental insecurity about where baseball is now in the culture, played out in public by the people who are supposed to love the game the most, and not dissimilar to the insecurity that popped up in some American politicians when the Wall finally fell and bluejeans turned out to matter more to the communists than Marx did." A WHILE BACK, I mentioned the idiocy of FEMA requiring firefighters to take sexual harassment training before being sent to New Orleans. Now John Derbyshire has what appears to be the curriculum for FEMA volunteer training. Whatever you think of this in the abstract, it seems awfully dumb to be putting people through this stuff when there's an actual, ongoing disaster. UPDATE: Reader Don Fleming emails: "Is there a firefighter who has been on the job longer than a month anywhere in this country who hasn't already had the diversity training?" Seems unlikely to me. Derbyshire's curriculum is satire. Sadly, I had to read it twice to be sure. posted at 01:47 PM by Glenn Reynolds
THE TAMPA TRIBUNE is running a new "Voices From the Front" section, where they get views from serving soldiers. I think it's a great idea. Installments can be found here and here. Read 'em both, because they have a different take on things than the usual media talking-heads. Congratulations to the Tampa Tribune for adding some diversity to its coverage.
