Chris D'Amato leads the Warriors to another Division III Championship Salem, VA - Eastern Connecticut State University put together a near-perfect game and pounded Montclair State, 16-1, in the Division III Baseball Championship title game May 27 in Salem, Virginia. Eight of the nine Eastern Conn State starters collected at least one hit, and the Warriors stroked eight doubles in an 18-hit attack. Starting pitcher Scott Czerwinski picked up his second victory in as many starts during the championship series as he allowed only four hits in seven innings of work. The bottom third of the Warriors lineup was especially productive as Chris D'Amato, Steven Rembisz and Anthony Formato were a collective eight-for-12 with two doubles, five runs scored and eight runs batted in. The national championship was the third for head coach Bill Holowaty in his 30 years at Eastern Connecticut State. The Warriors also won NCAA championships in 1990 and 1982.

Jeffs Open Florida Swing with Win Over Anderson, Loss to UMass Boston
March 13, 2005
FORT MYERS, FL - The Amherst College baseball team opened its season with a decisive 5-1 win over Anderson University on Saturday night, followed by a gut-wrenching 9-8 loss to UMass Boston on Sunday afternoon. Both games were played in Fort Myers, Florida.
Saturday’s victory was marked by stellar pitching performances from junior fireballer Joe Vladeck (Washington, DC) and rookie reliever Chris Edgar (Massapequa, NY). Vladeck surrendered just one run (unearned) on one hit while striking out six in five complete innings. Edgar earned the save with four strong innings in his collegiate debut, fanning six and scattering two hits. Junior outfielder Andrew Green (Lexington, MA) doubled, tripled, drove in a run and stole a base to pace the offense. Junior first baseman Dave Levinson (Philadelphia, PA) finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.
On Sunday, Amherst took what seemed to be a commanding 8-3 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning, only to fall victim to a six-run UMass Boston rally, capped by a game-sealing bases-loaded walk. The Jeffs rallied for five runs to take a 6-2 lead in the top of the sixth, sparked by senior co-captain Dave Powers’ (Andover, MA) game-tying RBI double. Amherst sophomore starter Brian Donahue (Sudbury, MA) pitched five strong innings and exited the game with 6-2 cushion, before giving way to junior Rob Anderson (Winnetka, IL) and senior Ed Imperatore (Tenafly, NJ). Green finished 2-for-3 with a walk in the loss.

Peter Reinharz, Brian C. Anderson EMAIL RESPOND PRINT T S ports have always been a repository of a culture's values, mirroring and shaping society. At least since the time of The Iliad The Joy of Sports Respecting the rules was central to sports' most noble creation: the sportsman. Broadly, the sportsman exhibited sportsmanship: a code of conduct centered on fairness and on graciousness in winning and losing. Going further still, a real sportsman upheld certain standards of clean living, civility, and decorum off the playing field; as a figure of public respect, he was respectable. T hough thankfully the sportsman hasn't completely vanished, he is an endangered species today. Three sweeping changes, all beginning in the sixties, have hastened his decline.
