Where Have You Gone Brady Anderson?
by Aaron Goldstein
21 February 2005 While it is true that steroids threatens the integrity of the game, baseball's past is not nearly as pristine as certain writers would lead you to believe.
Sometimes baseball players will have one
Elster signed a free agent contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1997 but injuries limited him to 39 games. Elster returned to the Texas Rangers in 1998 but hit only 8 homeruns while knocking in 37 runs. He ended his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2000.
In 1996, there were some who argued that it was the baseballs themselves not the players who were juiced. To most eyes, all baseballs look the same, but some believe that if balls are wound and stitched tighter, then the ball will be harder and smaller, and thus easier for batters to the hit out of the park. But 1996 was by no means the only season where a major league player displayed sudden power and just as quickly lost that power. Let us consider Davey Johnson. Most remember Johnson as the man who managed the New York Mets to the 1986 World Series (including Kevin Elster). Johnson also managed the Cincinnati Reds, the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Baltimore Orioles. Yes, Johnson also managed Brady Anderson on the 1996 and 1997 Orioles.

Brady Anderson G AB R H HR RBI BB SO SB CS OBP SLG AVG P/PA HBP GIDP G/F It was hoped that better times were upon the Orioles and Brady Anderson entering the 2001 season. In 2000, Anderson had struggled mightily in the middle of the season after suffering various sprains and strains. A very strong September (.308 with a .477 OBP) had given hope that the injuries were the cause of the sub-par season, and that Anderson could be counted on for at least representative play for the 2001 year, acting as a table-setter and base theft maven for the newly younger Oriole crew. This was simply not to be. Brady Anderson took one of the most severe career nose-dives in baseball history. Even though he was aging and was clearly only a shadow of the player he had been, Anderson could still be expected to provide a reasonable level of offense. Anderson started in the toilet in 2001, hitting .194, while struggling to a .282 OBP. And from there, it only got worse. He had no power, he had no bat speed, and he had no excuses. He simply seemed to have lost the ability to hit a baseball. There were no telltale issues. His strikeout ratio did not appreciate noticably, nor did his pitches per plate appearance, and he still added about .100 points to his OBP/BA ratio through his BB’s. He simply didn’t hit any more.

This is the last week of the season for the Orioles, and a time that I usually find myself waxing a bit nostalgic. The journey's almost over for this year. The boys and men that comprised the 2001 Baltimore Orioles, that lifted our spirits, disappointed us, made us wince, made us proud; a team that provided us with soaring highs and comedic lows. A season twice interrupted by tragedy, one local and not especially serious, except economically, the other one worldwide and horrifying. A season that brought me to a new place, too, with new friends (and new enemies, as it turned out), and new challenges (some days I still can't believe I'm hosting this thing.) And now, a large part of it is coming to a close. The friendships and memories endure, but the season itself is but a few days played out, usually in resignation, this particular season with an unusual sense of lost innocence, joy and sorrow...at the change in the world as we know it as Americans, and at the end of the career of Cal Ripken. As the week goes along, I expect to write about various aspects of the season, saving Cal for around Thursday or so, probably before I see him again in person on Friday and Saturday (early weather reports...possible rain Friday, cold and overcast on Saturday.)

Hi, and welcome to today’s TABALT chat, which is with Baltimore Orioles outfielder Brady Anderson . Brady has been with the Orioles longer than any current member of the team other than Cal Ripken Jr. That might not last much longer, though, as Anderson has had a rough season and the Orioles are looking to rebuild with youth. During the recent train derailment that stopped play in Camden Yards for three days, Brady took the time to sit down with our readers.
Fergus McGee, guest chat editor
Moderator at 2:27 PM ET: Thanks for stopping by, Brady.
Brady Anderson at 2:28 PM ET: No problem.
Moderator at 2:28 PM ET: We are now taking questions for Brady.
WaylonLuvsMonty at 2:30 PM ET: Brady, who do you think is the best looking man in baseball?
Brady Anderson at 2:31 PM ET: What? Why are you asking me that? I’m here to talk about baseball, not about Javy Lopez.
TomLasagna at 2:33 PM ET: Are you afraid to come out of the closet because of the abuse you’ll get from fans, or more because your teammates will shun you and make fun of you?
Brady Anderson at 2:37 PM ET: What? I’m not gay! I don’t know why you think I’m gay! I’m really very straight! I’m not remotely attracted to men! I like women! And I thought we were here to talk about baseball.

By Aaron Goldstein I have not read Jose Canseco’s book “Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant ‘Roids, Smash Hits and How Baseball Got Big.” However, many people have formed an opinion about baseball players and steroids. Bill O’Reilly believes that if Barry Bonds should pass Hank Aaron on the all time homerun list that there should be an asterisk placed next to Bonds name. One columnist, Ben Shapiro, goes further than that. In an article titled, “Ban baseball’s steroid users for life,” Shapiro calls upon Major League Baseball to ban Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire and anyone else who has used anabolic steroids for life. Now I read Shapiro’s column from time to time. He’s pretty sensible when it comes to foreign affairs, media and political correctness on university campuses. But I am afraid he has missed the mark here.
