Baseball could use a little more Roberto Alomar right now. After a 17-year career highlighted by two World Series victories (1992-1993 with the Jays), 10 Gold Gloves and a career .300 average, the 12-time All-Star (every season from 1990 to 2001) second baseman announced his retirement last week, following an erratic spring training start with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. In his farewell press conference, he told the media this. "I've had a long career. I'm real proud of myself, the way I handle myself on the field," Alomar said. "I couldn't play [any] more at the level I want to play. So I decided to retire." "I remember the good, the bad because in the game of baseball, you're going to have some ups and downs," he said. "And when I get home, I can sit at home in my bed and say, 'You know what? I gave everything that I could. I gave my best and I [enjoyed] it.'" His offensive numbers were enough to remember him by. Destined for Cooperstown, he retired just 276 hits shy of the 3,000-hit mark. In his 17 seasons he hit 210 home runs, had 1,508 runs, 1,134 RBIs, 474 stolen bases and 2,724 hits. But it was his defense that he was most proud of.

Newsday, Inc
San Juan - The white stately columns at the entranceway to Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico lend an appropriate touch of foreshadowing to the featured exhibit inside. They suggest a touch of royalty, a touch of class, a touch of historical significance. They suggest the presence of a hero. The hero is a native Puerto Rican who touched the lives of many during his 38 years on Earth and who continues to touch many more, a little more than 30 years after his tragic death. For the debut of a 22-game slate of regular- season major-league baseball games on this diverse tropical island, the omnipresence of Roberto Clemente is just the right touch. "He is the biggest star in Puerto Rico. You still hear people speaking his name. Everybody knows his story," said Mets second baseman Roberto Alomar, the best of the many modern-day native sons. "He's an idol, a guy who everybody respects and that we look up to. If you talk about Puerto Rican ballplayers, the first name is Roberto Clemente." That Alomar shares the same given name as Clemente is a nice touch too, because if the former Pirates rightfielder is the first name in Puerto Rican baseball, then the first family is the Alomars. Father Sandy had a 15-year career as a major-league player and remains in the game today as a coach for the Colorado Rockies. Roberto is in his 16th season, as is his brother, catcher Sandy Jr., with the White Sox.

Roberto Alomar retires after 17-year career
12-time All-Star says 'I can't play at level I want to play'
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Roberto Alomar retired Saturday, ending a career in which he became one of baseball's best second basemen and, for a time, its most scorned player. The 12-time All-Star called it quits with Tampa Bay, finishing just 276 hits shy of 3,000. He led Toronto to consecutive World Series titles in 1992-93 and was considered by many a lock for the Hall of Fame until a swift decline the last three seasons as he drifted from team to team. Alomar's legacy was tarnished, however, when he spit in the face of umpire John Hirschbeck in 1996 while with Baltimore. The messy confrontation made front-page news all over the country and turned Alomar into a target for angry fans throughout the majors. He made matters worse afterward by saying he thought Hirschbeck was under stress because his 8-year-old son, John Drew, had died of a rare brain disease three years earlier, prompting the umpire to charge into the Orioles' clubhouse looking for Alomar. Yet soon, the two became friends, and even worked together to raise money to fight that brain disease. And now Alomar deeply regrets losing his temper during a heated argument over balls and strikes.

Main December 27, 2004 Roberto's Back In yesterday's post about the Puerto Rican Winter Leagues , I noticed this item (emphasis added). Bithorn Stadium, just 10 minutes south of San Juan, has struggled to draw even nominal attendance despite a renovated stadium and the presence of Crabbers infielders Alomar and Carlos Baerga (who doubles as team president). A recent injury to Alomar has helped curtail interest , but ardent fans say the team's problems — as well as the league's and, by extension, Puerto Rico's — run much deeper. I couldn't find anything about it on the web, so I contacted Edwin Rodriguez who runs the web page for the winter league. He filled in some details: Alomar started the season in Puerto Rico already under treatment for his lower back. At least once a week he was flying to the states (don't know where) to get treatment. After the second week of the season it was too much for him, his back wasn't in good shape. That much I can tell you, I was asking the same when he left but nobody knew the specifics. This is the same back injury that kept him out of action most of September. I was wondering why there's been

Roberto Alomar and the Hall of Fame : A "couple thousand words" on why Robbie Alomar deserves your vote. If you had one. Of course, if you did you wouldn't be here reading this, you'd be out making stuff up.
posted by yerfatma to Baseball at 6:37 AM CST (18 comments total) Why do people keep trying to determine Hall of Fame worthiness by numbers? This makes no sense to me. Instead, simply ask yourself the following question: Was Roberto Alomar a dominating player at his position for a significant portion of his career?
If the answer is yes, he goes. If not, he stays out. And the answer is an easy yes, in my mind.
It pains me to say that too. I think the guy is a selfish prick who I wouldn't let play for my company softball team. I would scribble out is autograph. I would pee on his rookie card.
Hall or no, Alomar is an all-time great. It's a shame a tantrum in 1996 and a lousy end of his career may ruin the way he's remembered.
He did that to himself. He tarnished his own record. He's the one who spit on that ump. He's the one who cashed checks while playing the most consistently lazy brand of baseball I have ever seen from a man in a Mets uniform(!). He's the one who insisted on sliding into first base despite, you know, laws of physics and all that garbage. The shame is his and his alone.

Roberto Alomar has always been a fan favorite and a highly collected player. He is one great hitters and has been one of the best in baseball for years. Most of his fans think he is a sure thing to make the Hall of Fame and with a .300 career batting average and being a 12 time All-Star there is a good chance of that happening.

96. March 1997 Boston Baseball: Overhaul MLB Discipline System
Time to Overhaul baseball s Discipline System. The roberto alomar spitting incident exposed many flaws in Major League baseball’s discipline system.
http://roadsidephotos.sabr.org/baseball/bb97-1.htm
As the ugly publicity was dying down, Richie Phillips, head of the umpires’ union, threw oil on the flames. Thundering, "Players are not entitled to due process," Phillips demanded that the American League order Alomar to serve his suspension during the playoffs, without a hearing. Otherwise, he warned, the umpires would ignore the no-strike clause in their own contract and boycott the playoffs. MLB's lawyers swung into action, as fans thirsty for the first untainted postseason since 1993 instead watched the game return to the courtroom.
Major League Baseball should learn several lessons from this sorry spectacle:
A baseball insider must handle discipline . A credible disciplinary system requires a credible judge someone with a baseball background. Former league presidents Dr. Bobby Brown and Bill White qualified, but their replacements do not. While Gene Budig’s five-game suspension of Alomar may have been too lenient, the umpires would have been less hostile if the decision had been made by a career baseball man, not a university administrator with only two years’ baseball experience. MLB needs a respected elder statesman to serve as discipline czar: someone like Joe Morgan, Frank Robinson or retired National League umpire Doug Harvey, nicknamed "God" by the players.
Players should not be suspended before a hearing . Umpires and fans were furious that after his suspension, Alomar kept playing as though nothing had happened. This flows from a MLB policy which authorizes suspension of a player immediately after the league president reviews the umpire’s report of an incident, but then allows the player to postpone the suspension by filing an appeal. "Appeal" is a misnomer: what MLB calls an “appeal” is really the player’s only chance to tell his side of the story. MLB knows that a court or arbitrator would invalidate any major penalty imposed on a player who hasn’t received a hearing, so it should stop announcing “suspensions” which can’t be enforced.

MLB FOREIGN EXPANSION by Craig Tomarkin It all started when the Montreal Expos debuted in 1969. They made their first and only post season appearance in strike shortened 1981, with a 60-48 record. Andre Dawson and Gary Carter were the team's hitting stars and they managed to beat the Phillies three games to two in the opening playoff series. In Game 5, Steve Rogers pitched a shut out for them against Steve Carlton to win it. They were unable to outlast the Dodgers in the next series though as Fernando Valensuela allowed only 3 hits in 8 2/3 innings to beat them 2-1 in a thrilling come from behind Game 5 victory. As of 2002, we are still waiting for them to make a World Series appearance. The Toronto Blue Jays were the second foreign team to join the MLB in 1977. Again, a team from Canada. This franchise proved to be stronger than the Expos. They first made the playoffs in 1985 and again in 1989. The team soon became a force, making the playoffs three straight years from 1991 to 1993. The last two seasons they won back to back World Series, establishing them as the first foreign team to build an MLB dynasty. Who will follow as the next foreign team? Will it be another team from Canada or will another country step to the plate?
