THEY MIGHT BE LIKENED TO A PAIR OF MAGICIANS AS THEY EXERCISE THEIR defensive skills in the middle of the infield, often flipping the ball between them with nonchalant grace and perfect timing during a double play. They aren't kids anymore, but there have been no signs that age has detracted from their ability to work together or individually with consistent smoothness.

Roberto Alomar, Hall of Famer?
As you have read by now, Roberto Alomar retired over the weekend. (who had him retiring ahead of Sandy Jr. in the pool?) The question that I always enjoy considering when a big name retires is... hall of famer or not? Let's look at his credentials.
Twelve consecutive All-Star games from 1990-2001
Ten Gold Gloves over an eleven year period from 1991-2001
.300 career batting average, 2,724 hits and 474 stolen bases
A career fielding percentage of .984
Five top ten finishes in batting average
Seven top ten finishes in stolen bases
Seven trips to the playoffs and two World Series titles
In one of those World Series years with Toronto (1993), Alomar had perhaps his finest season. He set career highs (at the time) in hits, home runs, runs scored, RBIs, stolen bases and batting average (not to mention on-base and slugging percentage). His .326-17-93-55 line that season would make anyone proud. He may have been even better in 1999 for Cleveland. He hit a career high 24 home runs and drove in a career high 120. He also scored a career high 138, and hit .323 with 37 steals. He had a Power/Speed number of 29.1 that season, good for 3rd in the league behind only Junior Griffey and Pudge Rodriguez (that was IRod's MVP year with 35 HR and 25 SB). In my memory, he was the best or one of the best 2B in baseball from about 1993 to 2000.

Roberto Alomar to Tampa
I could spend this time to write about Alfonso Soriano who agreed to terms with Texas today (keeping John Hart's excellent record of avoiding arbitration intact), or we could spend more time discussing my favorite free agent name , but instead, let's talk about Robbie Alomar.
Pending his physical, Roberto Alomar will be playing for Lou Piniella in 2005. Alomar will attempt to follow in Wade Boggs footsteps (Boggs finished his career with the Rays, getting the 200 hits he needed to cross the magical 3,000 hits barrier in his final two years). Alomar can join Boggs and the 3,000 hits club with 276 more hits. He also needs just 26 stolen bases to join the 500 SB club. Alomar is third in his career among active major leaguers in steals (trailing Lofton and Bonds). He will turn 37 in April, so he might be able to squeeze out a couple of decent seasons to put him over those marks. The mere mention of Alomar takes me back to 1993 when he hit .326 with 17 HRs, 93 RBIs and 55 SBs to anchor my first ever rotisserie team to a championship.
I wish nothing but the best for Alomar as he attempts to put the finishing touches on a hall-of-fame career. It would be nice if this worked out good for the Devil Rays, too. They can use all the help they can get.

Roberto Alomar calls it quits after 17 seasons
March 20, 2005 12-time All-Star, Roberto Alomar called it quits yesterday after 17 seasons in the major leagues. A 10-time Gold Glove winner and career .300 hitter, Alomar was an All-Star for 12 consecutive seasons from 1990 to 2001, and finished 276 hits shy of 3,000. He led the Toronto Blue Jays to consecutive World Series titles in 1992-93 and is considered by many a Hall of Fame candidate. "I played a lot of games and I said I would never embarrass myself on the field," Alomar said. "I had a long career, but I can't play at the level I want to play, so it's time to retire. I just can't go anymore. My back, legs and eyes aren't the same." Alomar's announcement came one day after he committed two errors in one inning of a spring-training game with the Devil Rays, who signed him to a $600,000, one-year contract in January.
A switch-hitting middle infielder, Alomar also played for San Diego, Cleveland, the New York Mets, Arizona, and the Chicago White Sox. In his prime, he was one of the best all-around players in the game, blessed with speed, smarts and extra-base power.

The best all-time Latino players of the major leagues.
Whether in the slick, high definition of plasma screens or on grainy film of days gone by, certain images in baseball have become as familiar as the sight of a sun-drenched field on a warm summer day: Roberto Clemente running with abandon from first to third on a single.
For more than a century, Latino players have impacted baseball in ways both large and small. And although only seven Latin American-born players are among the 258 players whose bronze plaques adorn the walls of the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, there can be no doubt that their ranks in that shrine will swell in the coming years given the impact Hispanic players are having in the majors today.

By Richard Rodriguez
Date: 10-14-96 About the only issue on which Al Gore waxed passionately during last week's vice-presidential debate was Oriole baseball player Roberto Alomar's behavior. Americans admire baseball, after all, for being a game of rules. Yet perhaps for that very reason, baseball is no longer America's no. 1 pastime. If we want to blame anyone for coarse behavior, we should look to ourselves. PNS editor Richard Rodriguez, author of "Days of Obligation: An Argument with my Mexican Father," writes essays for the Los Angeles Times Sunday Opinion and PBS' The News Hour with Jim Lehrer. After Pete Rose and Tonya Harding and O.J. Simpson, you'd think Americans would have learned a lesson or two about sports heroes and the people who make them. But what lesson did we take from the sorry story of Roberto Alomar? Mr. Alomar is a brilliant baseball star for the Baltimore Orioles. But two weeks ago, in a crucial late-season game, Mr. Alomar had a temper tantrum after he was called out on strikes by home-plate umpire John Hirschbeck. The brilliant baseball star turned into a jerk. He screamed, he bumped the umpire, and then spit into Mr. Hirschbeck's face. Ejected from the game, morose in the clubhouse, Alomar made matters worse by describing the umpire as "bitter" because Hirschbeck's 8-year-old son recently died of a rare brain disease.
