Citizens at Bat: Baseball's Community All-Stars
By Frank Fitzpatrick Policy Review
July-August 1996, Number 78
Poor battered baseball . It's got more problems than the Detroit Tigers pitching staff. Among Generation X's favorite sports, it ranks somewhere between beach volleyball and Mortal Kombat. Its TV ratings resemble Greg Maddux's earned-run average, and you can count its marketable superstars on one of Ken Griffey Jr.'s fingers. But baseball is tops in one dubious category. There are unquestionably more boors in baseball than in any other sport. As the game battles to repair its tattered image, its legion of louts just battlestheir fans, reporters, opposing players, even themselves. They rebuff autograph-hunters. They berate sportswriters (when they aren't hiding from them). They charge the mound whenever a pitcher dares to throw inside. And some even abuse themselves with alcohol and drugs. Fortunately, this isn't the whole story. There are many players who are doing much more than keeping tabloid reporters gainfully employed. They are as committed to their performance off the baseball diamond as onold-fashioned role models for kids hungry to see even one adult stand by his word. These players are using their resources and influence to help some of the neediest in their communities. Though most promote charitable causes, they are not merely mannequins on display for some local charity. Performance-based contributionsa homer for the heart association, a save for the Salvation Army, a grand slam for Goodwillare fine as far as they go. But they do little to connect players with real people.

Abbott retires at 31: 'It's time to admit reality'
July 27, 1999 BY JOHN LOWE
FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER CLEVELAND He made the decision and spoke of the decision in the same quiet and dignified way that he conducted his career, which was one of the most extraordinary and admirable in sports history. Jim Abbott has decided to retire.
Jim Abbott "I think I've come to the end, baseball-wise," the left-hander said Monday from his home in California. "Unless some miracle happens that I don't foresee, it's time for me to move on and look in other areas and aspects of life. It's time to admit reality." Abbott, 31, was released last Friday by the Milwaukee Brewers, who recently had dropped him from the rotation. There was speculation that Abbott (2-8, 6.91 ERA) would try to catch on with another team. But he has concluded in the past few weeks that he no longer can pitch effectively. Monday, he summarized his career and his humanitarian impact like a man who had thrown his last pitch. "I feel fulfilled. I feel satisfied," said Abbott, who played at Flint Central and the University of Michigan. "My career wasn't always great, but it was wonderful. I learned so many lessons and had so many great friends and experiences. I don't feel the emptiness that I felt after I was released by the Angels a few years ago. "My experiences, added up, make me feel like I've had a Hall of Fame career."

Jim "Catfish" Hunter
The story of James Augustus Hunter reads like a Hollywood script. Born the last of eight children in Perquimans County, North Carolina, Jim Hunter rose to superstar status in baseball while maintaining his down home North Carolina character. Better known as "Catfish", Hunter achieved an impressive list of pitching statistics that have placed him in the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in the North Carolina Museum of History in Raleigh as well as in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. The youngest son of Abbott and Millie Hunter, Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing baseball with his brothers. While at Perquimans High School , Hunter excelled in a variety of sports, enjoying success as a linebacker and offensive end in football as well as a shortstop, cleanup batter and pitcher in baseball. His pitching skill began to attract scouts from major league baseball teams to Hertford. In his senior year, Hunter was wounded in a hunting accident which led to the loss of one of his toes and the lodging of shotgun pellets in his foot. The accident left Hunter somewhat hobbled and jeopardized his prospects in the eyes of many professional scouts, but the Kansas City Athletics had faith in the young pitcher and signed Hunter to a contract. Charles O. Finley, the Kansas City owner, gave Hunter the nickname "Catfish". The investment that Finley and the Athletics made in "Catfish" was returned many times over. Hunter's first major league victory came on July 27, 1965 in Fenway Park against the Boston Red Sox. In 1966 Hunter was named to the American League All-Star team and was named again in 1967. In 1968 Charles Finley moved the Athletics from Kansas City to Oakland and on May 8 that year in a game against the Minnesota Twins, Hunter pitched the first perfect game in the American League since 1922. He continued to win games and in 1974 both received the Cy Young Award

Press Release — January 4, 2005
Boggs, Sandberg Elected to the Hall of Fame
Will be Inducted in Ceremony on July 31, 2005, in Cooperstown (COOPERSTOWN, N.Y.): Wade Boggs , winner of five American League batting titles, and Ryne Sandberg A record 516 ballots were cast by BBWAA members with 10 or more consecutive years’ service, eclipsing by one the previous mark in 2001 when Dave Winfield and Kirby Puckett were elected. Players must be named on 75 percent of the ballots submitted to gain election. This year, 387 votes were needed. Boggs was listed on 474 ballots (91.86 percent), which ranks 19th among the percentage leaders in Hall voting. His vote total was the third in history behind Nolan Ryan (491) and George Brett (488), both in 1999. Boggs became the 41st player elected in his first year of eligibility, which does not include Lou Gehrig (1939) and Roberto Clemente (1973), who were honored in special elections. Sandberg received 393 votes, which reflected 76.2 percent of the electorate. His six votes above the cut tied Bill Terry (1954) and Gabby Hartnett (1955) for the 12th slimmest margin. Sandberg’s election came in his third year of eligibility. He was 71 votes shy of election last year. Boggs and Sandberg bring to 260 the number of elected members of the Hall. Of that total, 195 are players, of which 102 have been through the BBWAA ballot. Boggs is the 12th third baseman and Sandberg the 17th second baseman named to the Hall.

WHO ARE THE BIGGEST STARS IN BASEBALL? ECONOMISTS HAVE AN ANSWER COLUMBUS, Ohio Was Don Mattingly of the New York Yankees the biggest star among Major League Baseball hitters from 1990 to 1994? Such an assertion is sure to spark an argument among fans, but two Ohio State University economists have evidence to back up that claim. The researchers developed a method to measure the elusive concept of "star quality" among baseball players based on how much fans paid for their baseball cards. They then came up with a formula to figure how much this star quality was worth to the players teams in terms of ticket sales, concessions and other revenue. (See charts at end of release.) "Millions of baseball fans throughout the country are voting for their favorite players when they buy baseball cards," said Lucia Dunn, co-author of the research and a professor of economics at Ohio State. "As a result, we can use the prices of baseball cards to determine how popular certain players are and, ultimately, how much this popularity is worth to their teams." Dunn did the research with Charles Mullin, a graduate student at Ohio State who conducted the study for his dissertation.
