2003 INDUCTION DAY
July 20, 2003, Pasadena, California
On Sunday, July 20, 2003, a capacity crowd of nearly 200 people filled the Donald R. Wright Auditorium of the Pasadena Central Library, Pasadena, California, for the 2003 Induction Day ceremony of the Baseball Reliquary’s Shrine of the Eternals. The festivities began at 2:00 PM with the traditional bell ringing for the late Hilda Chester. The afternoon’s Master of Ceremonies, Terry Cannon, also Executive Director of the Baseball Reliquary, announced that Hilda was perhaps the most famous fan in baseball history, a denizen of the Ebbets Field bleachers in Brooklyn for more than 30 years: “One day, while passing a junk shop near her home, Hilda spotted a cowbell for sale in the window. Price: 10 cents. From that moment on, a mighty percussionist was unleashed in the Ebbets Field bleachers: Cowbell Hilda.”
“The Star-Spangled Banner” was performed on violin by veteran comedian and Pittsburgh Pirates fan Hugh Fink. Fink’s version was inspired by Jimi Hendrix’ legendary rendition of the National Anthem at Woodstock in 1969.
Before the 2003 Keynote Address and introduction of the 2003 class of inductees, two annual awards were presented by the Baseball Reliquary.

Jim Dandy #42 Classic Moment: September 4, 1993 Jim Abbott did not get off to a good start against the Indians when he issued a leadoff walk to Kenny Lofton. But Felix Fermin grounded into a double play and then Abbott settled into cruise control. Though Abbott struck out only three, the Indians never advanced a runner past first base and hit only six balls out of the infield as Abbott pitched the first no-hitter at Yankee Stadium since Dave Righetti did it 10 years earlier. Leading off the ninth inning, Lofton attempted to force the Yankees' one-handed pitcher to field a bunt, but fouled his attempt off and heard raucous boos from the Stadium crowd. Two batters after Lofton grounded out to shortstop, Carlos Baerga did the same to end the game. Baerga, a switch-hitter, took the unorthodox approach of batting left-handed against Abbott, but the ploy did not work. Earlier in the season, Abbott had carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning against the White Sox, but it was broken up by Bo Jackson's single.

Jim Abbott has battled the odds his entire life. Despite being born with only one hand, he was the 15th player to ever make a professional debut in the Major Leagues. Many considered the move a publicity stunt, but Abbott proved his doubters wrong by winning 12 games for the California Angels with a 3.92 ERA in his rookie season. On the mound, Abbott wore a right-hander's fielder's glove at the end of his right arm. While completing his follow-through after delivering a pitch, he rapidly switched the glove to his left hand so he could handle any balls hit back to him. In that first 1989 season as a professional, he won more games as a rookie than any other previous player without Major League experience. Although he was born without a right hand, Abbott was taught by his father to focus on his gifts and to find alternative ways to win. A baseball fan, Abbott spent hours as a youngster bouncing a ball off a wall to practice fielding as well as throwing. In high school, he was the starting quarterback for his football team, which went to the finals of the Michigan state championship. Jim showed enough promise as a pitcher to be drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays shortly after graduation. However, he chose to attend the University of Michigan on a baseball scholarship instead. Abbott led the Wolverines to Big Ten titles in his freshmen and junior years, and graduated with career record of 26 wins and 8 losses.

It is a clear summer night at Fenway Park in Boston. The Boston Red Sox and the
California Angels are in a hot pennant race. The Boston Red Sox are the best
hitting team in the American League. The Angels need a win and are counting on
their rookie pitcher. The old green stadium is overflowing with die-hard Red Sox fans as the rookie takes the mound. He has to concentrate on tonight's game and ignore the crowd. The game advanced with no trouble for the rookie. In the end, he gave up four harmless hits and, most importantly, no runs. When he got the final man out, giving his team a 4-0 victory, he starts to walk off the mound. All over Fenway Park, not only Angel fans, but Red Sox fans stood and

A Message From Jim Abbott By Jim Abbott Wed, 16 Feb 2005, 17:47
It Is Not What's Gone - But What's Given Not too long ago a little girl in my neighborhood was born without a hand. She was born just after my own second daughter Ella was born. Her parents were obviously shaken up. About a week later, I saw them at a neighborhood function and they came over to me and asked what my thoughts were, if I had any advice, for them and for their daughter. My advice? This is their daughter's life and they were asking my advice? Talk about humbling. What do you say? I had nothing very smart to say. I told myself I wouldn't let that happen again. That it was important that I could share what I have learned. I've learned that there are millions of people out there ignoring disabilities and accomplishing incredible feats. I learned that you can learn to do things differently, but do them just as well. I've learned that it's not the disability that defines you, it's how you deal with the challenges the disability presents you with. I've learned that we have an obligation to the abilities we do have, not the disability.

People will tell you that I overcame obstacles…maybe. But the truth is I was incredibly blessed in my life. More was given than was ever taken away.
Some of you may know that my career statistics weren’t that great. There were some incredible highlights and some agonizing lowlights. The truth is, I won’t go to the hall of fame. But if a career can be measured by special moments, lessons learned, and a connection with people then I would stack mine up with anyone’s. Maybe there is an obligation to share. To try and learn from the experiences life puts us through.
When you play major league baseball it is easy to become self-absorbed. Your world can become very narrow. One of the aspects of speaking that I enjoy is getting out in the real world and seeing how hard people work. I have been amazed at how much their pursuit of excellence is similar to that same pursuit on a baseball diamond. There are so many similar challenges.

Jim Abbott, One Handed Baseball Pitcher and Motivational Speaker Famed one handed major league baseball player Jim Abbott, who overcame a birth defect of only one hand. He became an amazing pro pitcher and ball player. Through stories, anecdotes, jokes, some self deprecation, and even failure and pain, he shows that people can overcome perceived limitations, and reach their dreams. Southpaw Jim Abbott was born without a right hand. He spent hours as a youngster bouncing a ball off a wall to practice fielding as well as throwing. Instead of looking at what he did not have, Abbott's fathers helped him finds ways to win. Along the way he pitched for the University of Michigan, carried the U.S. flag at the Pan American Games and won the gold-medal game at the 1988 Olympics.

Jim Abbott: Let's Give Him A Hand! One-Handed Pitcher Jim Abbott OK, OK, I admit the headline is a bit tasteless. But if anybody deserves a round of applause, it's this guy. I had the pleasure of seeing him pitch once, and even though he got pounded, it was still pretty neat to see him work. And while he didn't generate Hall of Fame stats, he did have a 10 year career and even pitched a no-hitter once. And as Len Hochberg explains, Abbott is an all-around athlete: As hard as it is to imagine Abbott playing baseball with one hand, how about other sports? In high school, he quarterbacked his team to the Michigan state championship game. "To this day, he's one of the best athletes I've ever been around," says Langston, now one of his closest friends. "We play golf together. Numerous times he's kicked my tail." January 20, 2005 in
