HANK AARON They called him the Hammer. Hank Aaron is the greatest home run hitter in Major League history, one of the most complete players of his era, and among the greatest of all time. Although best known as the player who broke Babe Ruth's career home run record, Hank Aaron was more than just a slugger: he was a real American hero who broke down racial barriers to pursue his dream. Originally playing for the Indianapolis Clowns of the Negro American League, Aaron was the last player from the Negro Leagues to reach the Majors. Playing in the desegregated major leagues in 1954 at age 20 with the Milwaukee Braves, Aaron was an immediate impact player, hitting .280 his rookie season and .314 as a sophomore. He won the batting title with a .328 average in 1956 and was named National League MVP in 1957, leading the league in home runs and runs batted in (RBIs.). Aaron enjoyed a twenty three-year Major League Baseball career during which he rewrote the game's hitting record book. He holds more Major League batting records than any other player in history, including most home runs (lifetime 755) and most RBIs (lifetime 2,297). He became the first big leaguer to total 3,000 hits and 500 home runs. Aaron was elected the Hall of Fame in 1982.

So the percentage in weapons is in my favor and I let the fellow with the ball do the fretting." - Hank Aaron T he Hank Aaron Award was introduced in 1999 to honor the 25 th Anniversary of Hank Aaron breaking Babe Ruth's all-time home run record. It was the first major award to be introduced in more than thirty years and it recognizes the best overall hitter in each league. D uring the 1999 season, winners were determined by assigning a pre-determined number of points for each hit, home run, and run batted in. During the 2000 season and subsequent years, the play-by-play broadcasters and color analysts from each club's radio and television stations will vote for three players from each league. Each first place vote will receive five points, each second place vote receives three points, and a third place vote receives one point. In 2003 the same points were distributed; however, fans now accounted for 30% of the votes which were taken via MLB.com's website. Baseball begins season-long tribute to Hank Aaron
Click here for more on this story Posted: Thursday April 08, 1999 10:35 PM AP ATLANTA (CNN/SI) It's taken 25 years, but it appears as though Hank Aaron is finally getting his due. On the 25th anniversary of his hitting career home run No. 715 and breaking the all-time record, Aaron was saluted by the Atlanta Braves before Thursday's game with the Phillies. This ceremony was the beginning of season-long celebration of The Hammer that will have the home run king being honored at ballparks across the country. Commissioner Bud Selig, NL president Len Coleman and Al Downing, who surrendered the historic homer, were among the many on hand to honor Aaron during the 45-minute ceremony. "You know 25 years ago ... when I hit that home run to beat the Babe's record, it was truly one of the most remarkable evenings that I have ever had in baseball," Aaron said following a two-minute standing ovation from the big crowd at 50,000-seat Turner Field.

He sat in an office at Turner Field, where Aaron, 65, is now senior vice president and assistant to the president of the Atlanta Braves . He answered questions from users about all aspects of baseball and his career. From Eddy Rivera: What was going through your mind each time you stepped into the batters box knowing you were 1 hit away from the record? Hank Aaron: I don't think anything was going through my mind. I knew eventually it would happen and I was waiting for a good pitch to hit. From Laruccia: Is it fair to say that if someone broke your record today, they would not be treated unfairly as you were.

http://www.who2.com/hankaaron.html
HANK AARON Baseball Player Henry "Hank" Aaron hit 755 home runs during his major league career, making him America's all-time home run leader. Aaron hit #715 on April 8, 1974, moving him past the record 714 career homers of Babe Ruth . Much like Roger Maris , Aaron was maligned by some fans who thought he was somehow unfit to surpass the mighty Ruth. (Racism played a part; Aaron was black, and passed Ruth's record only 28 years after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in major league baseball.) Aaron retired after the 1976 season, holding the all-time home run and RBI records and having played in a record 24 All-Star Games.
Extra credit : Aaron's nickname was "Hammerin' Hank"... He batted and threw right-handed... Aaron wore uniform #44 in the major leagues except during his rookie year, when he wore #5... His brother Tommie Aaron was also a major-leaguer who played with the Braves... Aaron published his autobiography, I Had a Hammer, in 1991... He was elected to baseball's Hall of Fame in 1982... Aaron hit his 715th home run off of Los Angeles Dodger pitcher Al Downing... Slugger Sadaharu Oh hit 868 homers during his career (1959-80) in Japan's major leagues, making him the worldwide home run leader... Aaron started his career with the Milwaukee Braves; the team moved to Georgia in 1966, becoming the Atlanta Braves. Aaron played for a new Milwaukee franchise, the Brewers, in 1975 and 1976.
