Cannon Invites Football Star Steve Young to Testify before Congressional Panel on BCS Debate
WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Chris Cannon (R-UT) announced today that future NFL Hall of Famer and BYU quarterback Steve Young will testify before the House Judiciary oversight hearing, Thursday, September 4th, about competition within college athletic conferences and potential antitrust aspects of the Bowl Championship Series. "There are tens of thousands of students being unfairly penalized by the current BCS system which virtually prohibits any NCAA Division I football team not part of a BCS Conference, from making a legitimate run at a national title" Cannon said. "I believe the BCS perpetuates a classic case of the rich getting richer and other colleges being denied important revenues. It is my understanding that last year, a total of $109 million dollars were paid out in revenue to Division I-A football programs. Of that, $104 million went to 64 Schools coming from the BCS Conferences while only $5 million was paid to the remaining 54 schools in the five Non-BCS conferences and Independents."

    Seasons change for Steve Young
    By Ann Killion
    Mercury News Staff Columnist

The Hall of Famer opened his front door, clutching a pile of dirty laundry in his famous left hand. ``Oops,'' he said. ``I completely forgot.'' These days Steve Young once swarmed Monday through Friday and postgame on Sundays doesn't have regular appointments with reporters. Or with defensive linemen. Instead, he has regular dates with the checkers at Costco (great prices on diapers), preschool teachers (Braedon, 4, and Jackson, 2, will be in the same school in the fall) and plumbers (why is yellow stuff coming out of the water heater?). But Young will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Sunday, and suddenly his past life is intruding into his current life.

Steve Young's crooked road ends in Canton
      GREG BEACHAM
      Associated Press
      SAN FRANCISCO
For once in his life, Steve Young doesn't have to wait for the good part. Most of the milestones in Young's life were reached only through an extraordinary amount of persistence and patience. Not many players have followed a road to the Pro Football Hall of Fame with as many detours, wrong turns and rest stops as the one traversed by the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback. But that crooked road led to a stellar career, and that career led to first-ballot election to the Hall of Fame. He'll be enshrined in Canton, Ohio, this weekend along with Dan Marino, Fritz Pollard and Benny Friedman. "I don't regret any of the places I went in football," Young said. "Everything gave me an experience or memories that I'll have forever. We had more success in San Francisco, but it was a great time everywhere. I always had fun."

CANTON, Ohio Dan Marino took the long, straight road to the Hall of Fame. Steve Young traversed a long and winding route. Advertisement Both got to the football shrine this weekend thanks to often dominant performances that few NFL quarterbacks could match and few defenses could handle. Marino was the most prolific passer in league history, and Young brought an exciting brand of uninhibited play to the game. They will join yet another quarterback, Benny Friedman, and Fritz Pollard as the Class of 2005. Friedman and Pollard were NFL pioneers. "I don't know that there's much difference in playing the quarterback position, other than Steve was more mobile and ran more and probably didn't go downfield that much," Marino says. "The idea is the same: You got to get the ball to the receivers and not throw interceptions. "I am happy for Steve, it's an incredible honor for anyone who gets inducted. Look at Steve's career and I am proud to be able to go in the Class of '05 with him. He is a guy who won a Super Bowl, and you look at Steve and he had a little adversity early in his career and was able to come back and worked the way he has and to win so many games."

The check was sent to the disbanded United States Football League 10 years ago to settle a make - or - break $1.69 billion antitrust case. It's cash value is $3.76, representing a $1 damage award, trebled to $3, plus 76 cents in interest. The token award was based on the NFL's monopoly power. But the USFL failed to prove the heart of it's case: that its losses were caused by the NFL's monopolistic practices. Wednesday was the 10th anniversary of the historic check, and former USFL executive Steve Ehrhart can't quite shake the sad memory of his old employer. At his office in the Memphis suburbs, Ehrhart still daydreams about the young heroes of his old league. Another legendary quarterback is calling it quits. 49ers QB Steve Young is expected to announce his retirement Monday, having been knocked out of the NFL by a series of concussions. His 15-year career had some rocky moments, especially in the early stages, but it concluded with Young being ranked among the all-time greats ever to play the position. He was given the unenviable task of succeeding Bay Area legend Joe Montana and proceeded to excel in every aspect. Young won a Super Bowl title in January 1995, passing for a Super Bowl-record six touchdowns. He was named the NFL Most Valuable Player in both 1992 and 1994.
