Fresh Titan fans give Orange faithful a run for their money by Mike Gibson Mike Keith's voice was taut, fraught with an almost desperate expectation as he set the play, the kick-off following a Buffalo Bills touchdown, the kick and ensuing run-back that would almost certainly punctuate the Tennessee Titans' 1999 season with a forlorn period. In this, the second of two AFC Wildcard play-off games, the Titans were down 16-15, with the better part of a football field separating them from victory, and a mere 16 seconds left to traverse the distance. "Do the Titans have a miracle left in them in what has been a magical season to this point?" Keith shrilled, presciently. "If they do, they need it now." Then he and color commentator Pat Ryan watched as Buffalo specialist Doug Christie booted a high, short kick, fielded by the Titans' Lorenzo Neal at the 25 yard line. But rather than lurching down the field in headlong desperation, Neal unhesitatingly swiveled and pitched the ball to burly Titans tight end Frank Wycheck. Wycheck, in turn, side-stepped and launched a bullet, a hard, airtight spiral to the far left side of the field and an expectant Kevin Dyson, the lithe, dizzingly fast wide receiver acquired by the Titans in 1998.

"I want to go out on top, and I want to retire as a Titan because I had so many great years here," Wycheck said at a news conference, with his wife, Cherryn, seated nearby. "I did everything I set out to do and much more. From a guy who wasn't even supposed to be in a training camp, let alone to where I ended up, I'm truly proud and I couldn't ask for anything more. It's been a truly great ride." Wycheck recently became the fourth tight end to top 500 catches, joining

But the Giants made a determined goal-line stand, got the ball on their own 5-yard line, and drove downfield for a TD. In the 4th quarter, Frank Gifford caught a TD pass to give the Giants a 17-14 lead. But Colts star quarterback Johnny Unitas passed his team down the field, completing 3 to Ray Berry for 62 yards. With 7 seconds left, the Colts kicked a field goal to force the first post-season overtime. In the extra period, the Giants punted and Unitas went to work. He took the Colts 80 yards before fullback Alan "The Horse" Ameche bulled into the end zone from the 1-yard line to end what many still call "the greatest game ever played." "The Immaculate Reception" December 23, 1972, AFC Divisional Playoffs, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania: Pittsburgh Steelers 13, Oakland Raiders 7 Down 7-6, with just over a minute left, the Steelers' Terry Bradshaw fired a pass downfield to halfback John Fuqua, who was hit hard by Raiders defender Jack Tatum just as the ball arrived. It hit one of the players and bounced in the air and, luckily for the Steelers, into the hands of rookie running back Franco Harris. After his "immaculate reception," Harris ran 42 yards to score with 5 seconds left.
