I'm in love with Mary Jane. She's my main thing. She makes me feel alright. She makes my heart sing.
I don't want to be anything other than what I've been trying to be lately. All I have to do is think of me, and I have peace of mind.
Ricky Williams collegiate and professional football star has apparently done the unthinkable. He did something so terrible that he created national media controversy and earned the scorn of both teammates and fans: He retired from football in his prime, at the height of his wealth, fame, and on-field dominance. All this, presumably, because he wanted to be free to smoke marijuana, without the constant burdens of on-the-job drug testing and image maintenance for the football consuming public. But there's a little more to it than that. Ricky Williams' new life actually sounds pretty good. He's off in the California countryside (in the aptly named "Grass Valley"), studying the Indian healing science of Ayurveda, "the knowledge and wisdom of life." Living in a small house, trying to stay out of the spotlight, Williams is learning a new discipline that he might one day use to help others. Of course, it's doubtful that anyone would go on the record as being against "the knowledge and wisdom of life." Yet, not too many seem to be able to leave Ricky alone or accept his career and lifestyle change. The sports media continue to speculate about Ricky's possible return to football. For months, his former teammates have blamed him for abandoning them and sinking their season. It would seem that a lot of folks can't figure out why anyone would just leave millions of dollars on the table.

Ricky Williams to Retire
Posted by James Joyner at 08:02 ESPN - Report: Ricky Williams to retire after 5 seasons Miami Dolphins running back Ricky Williams has told the team he plans to retire after just five NFL seasons, The Miami Herald reported on its Web site early Sunday morning. "He wants to get on with his life, wants to move on to bigger and better things," Herald reporter and ESPN commentator Dan Le Batard told SportsCenter.
According to the Herald's report, Williams wants to travel the world and is tired of the demands and restraints of a professional football career. "I just don't want to be in this business anymore," Williams told the paper. "I was never strong enough to not play football, but I'm strong enough now. I've considered everything about this. Everyone has thrown every possible scenario at me about why I shouldn't do this, but they're in denial. I'm happy with my decision. I'm finally free. I can't remember ever being this happy." He said he has already told his mother, Sandy; his agent, Leigh Steinberg; backup running back Travis Minor; and friends and family of his decision. According to Le Batard, the Dolphins are stunned by the news and members of the organization are still trying to talk Williams out of his decision, one the Herald says should be finalized this week when Williams faxes his retirement papers to the league. "I have no comment," Miami coach Dave Wannstedt told the Herald when asked about Williams' retiring. "Players report Friday. Right now, it's a 10-day dead period. We'll get everybody started on Friday.'' Wannstedt acknowledged talking with Williams but declined to give details of their conversation.

Dolphins' Williams Begins With An Apology
By Mark Maske Washington Post Staff Writer Tuesday, July 26, 2005; Page E01 DAVIE, Fla., July 25 The Miami Dolphins put aside their skepticism and welcomed back Ricky Williams on Monday. The prodigal-son tailback participated in the opening practice of training camp with the team he abandoned last season, then publicly issued the apology that he made first to his teammates Sunday when he addressed them in the locker room at the club's training facility. "I realized by making that decision [to retire last summer], I affected the team in a negative way," Williams said during a news conference. "I'm very regretful that people were hurt in the process of me doing that, and I do realize that to a lot of people it comes off as being very, very selfish. So I do offer an apology to all of the people who were negatively affected by my decision."
Ricky Williams is back in football, but the running back didn't specify for how long.

« SoCal Readers Main Commissar Says ... » July 25, 2004 Ricky Williams Man, a lot of people are sure giving this guy a bunch of shit because he's quitting football at age 27. So what? He made his money, he doesn't want to play football, he likes to smoke weed ... have at it. He's not your trained football monkey. Good for him. PS - If I become incredibly wealthy and decide to retire from the world of marketing and advertising, I hope that these same folks won't be nearly as critical of me as I'm hanging up the Excel spreadsheets. UPDATE: Arguing With Signposts takes a similarly nonplussed approach: In his own convoluted way, Ricky Williams is following a path blazed by the late Pat Tillman: follow your star, not the world's. Ok, maybe his particular star is less noble and a little hazy through all of the ganja smoke, but it's his life. TrackBack (4)

The Dolphins might have been tipped off that this might be an unusual season for Williams when management learned through a newspaper story that Williams had failed a drug test and was being docked four games' pay this season.
In May, three South Florida newspapers reported that Williams tested positive for marijuana and faced a fine of at least $650,000 for violating the league's substance-abuse policy for a second time since joining the Dolphins.

America's football heroes tackle life off the field Terry Bradshaw and Ricky Williams reveal their battles with depression and anxiety and kick off a nationwide effort to help others
New York, May 1, 2003 - Football icons Terry Bradshaw and Ricky Williams are encouraging Americans to take action if their lives are being impacted by depression or anxiety. To kick off National Mental Health Awareness Month, in May, the football heroes will share their experiences with depression and anxiety at an event in New York City, the first stop on a multi-city tour sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline as part of their ongoing efforts to empower and encourage depression and anxiety sufferers to seek help and treatment. "Looking back, I have been depressed for most of my life, even when I was a teenager. Finally, having a name for what I was feeling - depression - explained a lot about my actions," stated Terry Bradshaw, former quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, four-time Super Bowl winner, member of the Football Hall of Fame and two-time Emmy winner for Outstanding Sports Personality. "My hope is that by sharing my story with others, it will help people understand that they don't have to be embarrassed to ask for help. Taking that first step towards a diagnosis and treatment was one of the bravest things I've ever had to do." "Going public with my battle with social anxiety disorder has not only made me a better friend and father, it has had an impact on people I never even met. I am amazed at the response I get from people across the country who tell me that my story has helped them or a loved one get treated," said Ricky Williams, running back for the Miami Dolphins, leading NFL rusher for the 2002 football season, Most Valuable Player of the 2002 Pro Bowl and 1998 Heisman trophy winner. "At one point I would have not been able to get on a plane or talk to a group of three people. Now, I look forward to traveling across the country to speak to large groups about taking the first step towards a better life."

Daily Texan Staff The Ricky Williams Foundation, established by former UT running back Ricky Williams, donated 34 tickets to the first Longhorn football game of the season to the Big Brothers Big Sisters Office of Central Texas Tuesday. The event was put together by a collaboration between the foundation and BBBS. Sandy Williams, Ricky's mother, is the chairwoman of the foundation. She spent Tuesday afternoon handing out tickets to a group of enthusiastic children. She and Ricky developed the idea for the foundation, which has been in operation since May 2000. "It [donating tickets] gives them [kids] exposure to the college campus, the college students so they can see that they too can be the football player, the cheerleader or the band member," Williams said. "They see what they can do with hard work."
