Official Site Ricky Williams tells Dolphins he's retiring NFL.com wire reports MIAMI (July 25, 2004) Ricky Williams has decided to retire at the peak of his career, stunning the Miami Dolphins and leaving them with an enormous void in their backfield one week before the start of training camp. The 27-year-old Williams, who rushed for 3,225 yards in two seasons with the Dolphins, told them this week of his decision before leaving town, a team source told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. His retirement after just five NFL seasons caught the Dolphins by surprise. The news was first reported by The Miami Herald "You can't understand how free I feel," Williams told the Herald in a cell phone interview July 24 before boarding a plane in Hawaii and heading to Asia to begin several months of travel. Long ambivalent about life in the sports spotlight, Williams said there's no chance he'll change his mind, and he plans to file his retirement papers with the NFL on July 26 or 27. He told coach Dave Wannstedt of his decision July 23 and said Wannstedt tried to persuade him to reconsider. Miami opens camp July 30.

The 62nd Annual Maxwell Award
College Player of the Year
Ricky Williams, University of Texas
When Mack Brown took over as head football coach at the University of Texas this past season, he was faced with a dilemma. He did not like long hair. He had a policy forbidding it on every team he coached. But at Texas, he inherited a running back named Ricky Williams, who wore his hair in dreadlocks. What's a coach to do? Mack Brown looked at the 6'1", 230 pound Williams, watched him run and decided those dreadlocks weren't so bad, after all.
Carl Peterson, CEO, Kansas
City Chiefs, presents the 1998
Maxwell Award to Ricky Williams. "I was thinking about wearing braids myself after about the fourth game," Brown said. "Ricky is the best player I've ever seen. I think he's one of the best, if not the best, college football player ever." Williams, who is the 62nd recipient of the Maxwell Award as Collegiate Player of the Year, broke almost every offensive record on the books. He surpassed Tony Dorsett as college football's all-time leading rusher with 6,279 yards. He also set new standards for rushing touchdowns (72), points scored (452), and all-purpose yards (7,206). Williams helped restore the luster to the Longhorn football program. The team was 4-7 in his junior year and that was one reason why he chose to stay in school rather than enter the 1998 NFL draft. He wanted to get the Longhorns back on their feet which he did this past season as they finished 9-3.

Miami Dolphins running back Ricky Williams isn't sure why he is back playing football, but his honesty shouldn't be held against him writes columnist Ron Borges.
COMMENTARY Ron Borges NBCSports.com contributor Ricky Williams seems always to confuse and confound. Maybe we need to listen a little closer. Sports writers listen to him and shake their heads in amazement. Talk radio's screaming heads edit his sound bites and do their best to make him look like a fool or someone floating, like Jimi Hendrix, with "purple haze all in my eyes.'' They question his loyalty, as if that word even still exists in the National Football League, and insist his teammates in Miami want nothing to do with him. The fact is, they all know a healthy Ricky Williams can produce 1,500 hard yards in a way few other backs can duplicate, and they'll be glad to take it if he does. Coaches, of course, shiver when they hear him speak. He seems so cavalier about a game they feel ranks somewhere between a religious experience and a declaration of war that it is beyond their capabilities of understanding to know how to react to him.

Fish bet on risky Ricky Saban, too, might be sorry Ricky Williams shows up in Dolphins camp thinner and sorrier than he had been before he quit on team last season. DAVIE, Fla. - Ricky Williams is on trial with the Dolphins, even after he stood up at a team meeting Sunday and apologized for disappearing on them for a year. He quit once. How long will he stick around this time? "I think everybody is very accepting of his ability and respectful of him as a competitor," Dolphins rookie coach Nick Saban said. "I think that everybody is anxious to see that he is committed and to evaluate his level of commitment to what he's trying to accomplish." Well, at least Williams made it to training camp this summer. One year ago, he quit one week before camp, probably not so coincidentally days after he found out he owed the NFL a four-game suspension for his third positive marijuana test.

Ricky's stirring up pot again Sources say the Dolphins locker room is already divided about the return of former running back Ricky Williams, who walked away from the team last year just one week before training camp. When Ricky Williams walks into coach Nick Saban's first team meeting today at 1 p.m., he should not anticipate a welcome back chant of "Ricky, Ricky, Ricky," from his jilted Dolphin teammates. The red carpet is rolled up and in storage. Even if the old Ricky shows up - assuming he doesn't change his mind - and busts one between the tackles on his first carry at practice tomorrow morning, the clock is ticking on his bizarre Dolphins career. It seems clear that Saban, a Bill Belichick no-nonsense disciple, has made a business decision by embracing the return of Williams to restore his value as a football player so he can be traded. Whether that happens before the Oct. 18 trade deadline or after the season, Saban is taking a huge risk.

Ricky Williams cleared to practice with Dolphins
July 20, 2005 RALEIGH, North Carolina (Reuters) - Running back Ricky Williams, who unexpectedly retired from the Miami Dolphins just before last season, has been cleared by the NFL to practice with them but must serve a four-game substance-abuse suspension. The decision allows the 28-year-old to report to Miami's training camp Sunday. Williams, who led the NFL in rushing in 2002, retired from football last year four days before training camp. It came after he learned he had failed his third drug test, The Miami Herald and South Florida Sun-Sentinel have reported. Williams decided this spring he wanted to return to football. "If he decides to return, Ricky Williams is eligible to report on the first day of training camp without incurring (an additional) violation of the substance-abuse program," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told The Herald. "His four-game suspension for violating the program would be served (during) the first four games of the regular season." If a player retires while being in the NFL's substance-abuse program and then tries to return within a calendar year, that is considered a substance-abuse violation because it could be a way to avoid being tested for drug use.

In the autumn of 1995, the 49ers fullback, William Floyd, had a knee destroyed by tacklers. Management had been overworking him mercilessly. On the play before his injury Floyd had carried four men for about two yards. The TV replay of his leg above the knee going one way and his leg below the knee going the other ended what was left of my mild football addiction. So it was only peripherally that I followed the career of a running back named Ricky Williams, who in '95 was a freshman at the University of Texas. He had speed, power, and dreadlocks (before they were fashionable). He broke state records held by Doak Walker and Earl Campbell. The New Orleans Saints drafted him in 1999; Mike Ditka gave up eight players to get him. Williams injured a shoulder in his second NFL season and missed six games, but still gained 1000 yards. As he was recovering, he was induced by Glaxo SmithKline to be the celebrity patient in a campaign to sell Paxil to the 12 million Americans who allegedly suffer from "Social Anxiety Disorder." Glaxo had to sell the concept that shyness is actually a medical condition — "a chemical imbalance in the brain" — that can be corrected by a pill. Williams gave interviews in which he thankfully quoted a therapist advising him that his reluctance to be accosted by strangers at airports could be overcome by medication. Williams was traded to the Miami Dolphins in 2002. That season he led the league in yards gained rushing (1853) and number of carries (383). In 2003 his yardage dropped slightly but again he had the most carries (393).

Player Apologizes To Team, Fans
POSTED: 12:51 pm EDT July 25, 2005 UPDATED: 3:02 pm EDT July 25, 2005 MIAMI Ricky Williams admitted Monday that his huge outstanding debt to the Miami Dolphins was one of his motivations for coming back to football. Ricky Williams returns to the Dolphins Williams owes $8.6 million in bonus money to the Dolphins for breaching his contract by abruptly retiring. He retired unexpectedly just before the start of last year's training camp, and critics believe his departure played in a role in Miami's losing season last year Williams said he would be dishonest if he didn't admit that the settlement contributed to his decision, because even if he had started a new job, the settlement would always be "chasing him." Williams acknowledged shortly after retiring that he failed drug tests and faced a suspension for testing positive three times for marijuana.
