Reggie White dead at 43 : Sad. Just sad.
posted by wfrazerjr to Football at 11:19 AM CST (101 comments total) Yeah. And before the "He was just another racist knucklehead" posse arrives, of which I would have happily been a member, it's worth noting:
According to Andrea Kremer, who was with the family up until last week, he not only recanted those remarks, the whole episode made him question his belief system to the point where he recanted religion as he knew it, and was in the middle of a spiritual quest to get to the root of his faith.
He hadn't been to church in years. He was learning Hebrew so he could read the scriptures directly... he might not have been the most open minded guy, but I will give him credit for trying as hard as he could to make himself better.
My condolences to his family.

chicobangs, you're right to attempt to give him credit for trying, but if he truly wanted to change his ways why didn't he just recant what he said? If the shoe were on the other foot people of White's conservative ilk would not do the same. I offer my compassion to White's family, but it's just sad that to people like White compassion is only campaign slogan.

Listening to the ESPN Sunday Morning NFL program, I was shocked when I heard that Reggie White passed away this morning of what appears to be a massive heart attack (some are now saying sleep apnea). Posted by admin on Sunday, December 26th, 2004 at 1:40 pm. Something to say?

Reggie White, Former NFL Player
Even now, more than two months later, it is still hard to believe. How could Reggie White, the greatest defensive lineman ever to wear an Eagles uniform, be gone? How could such a powerful, dynamic man be dead at age 43? It doesn't seem possible.
White died of respiratory failure on December 26th at his home in Cornelius, North Carolina. Mike Quick, White's former teammate with the Eagles, was preparing to leave for St. Louis for the Eagles-Rams game when he received a phone call from Sara, Reggie's wife, telling him the news.
"It's a huge loss," Quick said. "He was a great person. He had one of the biggest hearts of anybody I know. The most important things to him were his belief (in God) and his wife and family. He always stood for something."
In announcing White's death to the Fox TV audience, Hall of Fame defensive end Howie Long said: "I've always felt that Reggie White was the best defensive end ever to play in the NFL, but today is about remembering Reggie White the man. He touched so many lives, both inside and outside the game of football. He should be remembered for those contributions as much as the ones that he made on the football field."
The Maxwell Club is honoring White tonight with The Spirit Award given to an individual who made an important and lasting contribution to the community. White did that, especially during his eight seasons with the Eagles. He set a club record with 124 quarterbacks sacks, but his impact did not stop there. He also worked in the impoverished neighborhoods of North Philadelphia, bringing food, clothing and hope to the people who lived there.

Former NFL star Reggie White died Sunday morning at his home near Huntersville, N.C., his wife said. White turned 43 on Dec. 19.
A public viewing service for White will be held from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at A.L. Jinwright Funeral Service in Charlotte. A private service also will be held, though the details won't be made public, the funeral home said.
Sara White confirmed her husband's death saying that she believes White died of respiratory failure related to his sleep apnea.
The Knoxville News Sentinel reported that White died of a massive heart attack.
An autopsy is to be performed to determine the exact cause of death.
"Today our beloved husband, father and friend passed away," Sara White said through the pastor. "His family appreciates your thoughts and prayers as we mourn the loss of Reggie White. We want to thank you in advance for honoring our privacy."
Reggie and Sara White have two children, Jeremy and Jecholia. Reggie White was born in December 19, 1961 and is a graduate of Howard High School in Chattanooga.

TAMPA - Jon Gruden was stoic and composed as he answered questions from the media Sunday after a 10th Tampa Bay loss. But when the topic turned to the death of NFL great Reggie White, the Bucs coach showed emotion. "That ruined my day," said Gruden, who got to know the defensive end in 1993-94 as Green Bay's receivers coach. "Reggie was a very close friend of mine. It was a tragic loss for mankind. Certainly for a lot of us who knew him, it was stunning. You can measure defeat easily. It's a sick feeling. But death is final, and I'm not really good at that." Then, as he added, "I certainly wish Sarah White and her family the best," his eyes grew teary and his voice cracked.

Sum of White: ferocity, community, humor
Reggie White impacted teammates, coaches, foes and people who had no football connection.
By Associated Press Published December 27, 2004 After Eagles defensive tackle Jerome Brown was killed in an automobile accident in Brooksville 12 years ago, Reggie White delivered the eulogy. The service remains memorable in part because of White's impassioned tribute, in part because the Eagles placed their ties on Brown's casket in homage to a man who always had to borrow one to conform to Buddy Ryan's road dress code.

GLAAD: During a shocking March 25 speech to the Wisconsin Legislature, Green BayPackers player Reggie White accused the U.S. of going away from God by allowing homosexuality to "run rampant." White said, "homosexuality is a decision, it's not a race. People from all different ethnic backgrounds live in this lifestyle. But people from all different ethnic backgrounds also are liars and cheaters and malicious and back-stabbing." He then said, "I've often had people ask me, 'Would you allow a homosexual to be your friend?' Yes I will. And the reason is because I know that that person has problems. If I can minister to those problems, I will. But the Bible strictly speaks against it." He then explained that God had created different races for different reasons. Blacks, he said, are gifted at worship and celebration, while whites are good at organization. "Hispanics were gifted in family structure, and you can see a Hispanic person, and they can put 20, 30 people in one home," he said, adding that the Japanese and other Asians are inventive and "can turn a television into a watch." Assembly Speaker Scott Jenson had invited White, who is also an ordained minister, to speak about his community work. Jenson said that sexual orientation is biologically based, and not a decision.

Ordained minister and football legend Reggie White died yesterday at the age of 43. Called the "Minister of Defense," White was known for his faith both on and off the field. Green Bay quarterback Brett Favre said, "He may have been best player I've ever seen and certainly was the best I've ever played with or against." TrackBack
Comments I have been a fan of Reggie since his days with the University of Tennessee. He was a dominant player and always a gentleman. Many forget he played with the mighty Memphis Showboats of the USFL. I have always appreciated his strong public stance for right. That said, this morning on sports radio the host said Reggie had not been to church in 4 years, had renounced Christianity, and was studying Hebrew to convert to Judaism. Has anyone else heard this? Even if true it doesn't diminsh the fine example he set. I will pray for his family. I will be praying for his family. Posted by: ben at December 27, 2004 10:43 AM

An attractive and interesting card of a great defensive player Cons None The Bottom Line Reggie White: 1961-2004. A man whose most famous ministry may have been on the football field. Full Review Whenever he took the field, Reggie White was one of the most feared and respected defensive ends of his era. In fifteen NFL seasons with the Eagles, Packers, and Panthers, White recorded 198 sacks, a number topped only by Bruce Smith. In nine of his fifteen seasons, he logged 10 or more sacks. White led the NFL in that category twice, including a career best of 21 sacks in the strike-shortened 1987 season. Whenever Reggie White took the field, offenses had to be on their guard. Their efforts to stop White often weren't good enough. Not only did White show proficiency for nailing quarterbacks, but he also had a knack for stuffing runners and forcing fumbles. He was twice named NFL Defensive Player Of The Year for his superior skills. After starting his pro career with the Memphis Showboats of the USFL in 1984, White joined the Philadelphia Eagles, who held his NFL draft rights, in 1985. His first NFL campaign was a strong one, where he logged 13 sacks. He became an integral component in the Eagles' Gang Green defense. His NFL rookie card came in 1986, before he started wearing his familiar #92 jersey for the Eagles (Smiley Creswell wore #92 for the Eagles in 1985). On his Topps card #275, White is shown wearing #91, but did switch to #92 in his second NFL season. In the featured photo, White strikes a pose as if couldn't wait to take the field and wreak more havoc on his opponents.

Same old Reggie
Rest assured, White will make his presence felt in Carolina
By Ron Borges
As published in print Aug. 7, 2000
Reggie White It had it while he was becoming the most prolific pass rusher in NFL history, first for the Philadelphia Eagles and then the Green Bay Packers after a brief stint in the defunct USFL. Most of all, it had it last year, even while he sat in repose. At 38, Reggie White was a multimillionaire in retirement, a minister of good works who could dedicate his life full time to his Christian ministry and street-outreach programs without ever having to worry about being leg-whipped by a pass blocker or barreled into by 600 pounds of double-team blocks. What could be a better life? But after a year of living in the silence of safety, White could not shake one thing. He could not shake the fact that he made 16 sacks in his final NFL season, a number most defensive linemen only dream of, and he still loved making every one of them. His last employers, the Packers, were not among them, but to their credit, they did nothing to discourage him or his suitors, and today he is back working at his violent trade after a one-year sabbatical. Back, Carolina head coach George Seifert says, as a situational player expected to participate in only 15-20 plays a game.
