I Remember Reggie White
by Alan Ross Reggie White's premature death shocked the sports world. How could this phenomenal fortress of muscle and mind exit so young at 43? Those who observed him from a distance will forever freeze in time the pinnacle moment of White's professional football career: a champion ball-capped, T-shirted White jogging around the perimeter of the Louisiana Superdome and holding high the trophy he and the Green Bay Packers had just earned in Super Bowl XXXI. While many NFL greats leave an indelible stamp on the field, not as many make their marks as exemplary human beings. Those closest to Reggie clearly saw that distinction. I Remember Reggie White presents the recollections and favorite stories of this dynamic minister and pro football's Minister of Defense as captured in more than two dozen interviews with teammates, friends, coaches, acquaintances, and members of the media. The narrative spans his career from his days at Chattanooga (Tenn.) Howard High School, the University of Tennessee, and the defunct USFL Memphis Showboats through his NFL days with the Philadelphia Eagles and the Green Bay Packers. Reggie White left behind a massive legacy. A thirteen-time Pro Bowler and consensus two-time Defensive Player of the Year, he retired as the NFL's all-time sack leader. Selected to the NFL's 75th Anniversary All-Time Team in 1994, he still holds the Super Bowl single-game sack record.

White said his decision was based
on several factors, including
the chance to have a positive
influence on others and to play

building on Lake Norman. Most people expected that the next step in Reggie White's football life was to have been an induction to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in four years. Instead, White, the NFL's all-time sacks leader, ended a one-year retirement, when he agreed to contract terms with the Carolina Panthers on Friday 21 July. "We look forward to having Reggie White on our football team,'' coach George Seifert said. "He brings a special talent and special mindset that we believe will help in our development as a team.'' "To see No. 92 out there in our colors, I caught myself looking over there two or three times and saying 'Wow, there's Reggie White in our uniform,'" quarterback Steve Beuerlein said. The move gave the Panthers in 2000 the highest-profile player in franchise history and it was thought perhaps a major upgrade to a defense that ranked 26th in 1999 with only 35 sacks.

There was much more than just football in the life of one the greatest defensive linemen in football history.
The quest for truth is a human endeavor that crosses ages, cultures and millennia. It is the driving force that animates the lives of many. It is this burning desire for truth that drives most scientists to ask "why?" after each discovery. This desire has launched humans both deep into space and taken us on a microscopic tour of the atom. While this passion might seem fitting for a scientist, it is somewhat surprising coming from a 300-pound NFL superstar. Last week, Reggie White, arguably the greatest defensive lineman in football history, passed away suddenly at the age 43. It turns out there was much more than just football in the life of Mr. White. In his prime as a player, White was well known for preaching Judeo-Christian values, both inside the locker room and out. He was lovingly referred to by fans as the "Minister of Defense" a reference to his exceptional play as a defensive player, and his passion for religion.

RIP, Reggie White
Reggie White, dead at 43 If you don't care about football or don't have a husband who has the radio in the bathroom tuned to sports talk radio, you probably have no idea who Reggie White was. A pro football player. A defensive end. Had the most sacks of any player in NFL history. He was certainly a great football player and had a personality that matched his size. He's also being eulogized as an even greater person off the field. A number of football people believe that. Of course, it's expected to say nice things about a public figure when he dies, so I don't necessarily hold anything against these people, but... I don't agree with them. John Aravosis at America Blog has compiled a selection of Reggie's greatest hits for your perusal. Some of them, especially the excerpts from the speech Reggie gave to the Wisconsin legislature have been fodder for Jim Rome and other talk radio personalities for years. The more vitriolic homophobic comments weren't ever given as much air time since they weren't funny. Reggie White was a football player and a minister and was supposed to be a role model for the boys and young men who looked up to him as a great football player. He used that position to spread hate and fear. That's sad.

But before his death, the football star confessed that sports trivialized faith and religion. Will his message be heard? By Tom Krattenmaker When I interviewed pro football veteran Troy Vincent last spring for my research on religion in sports, I asked how he accounted for the rise of Christianity in the National Football League (a cause that the Pro Bowl cornerback Vincent has helped advance). Vincent was quick with his answer: Reggie White. A whole constellation of factors has gone into the growth of faith in the game over the past two decades, but Vincent was certainly right in the sense that White, "the Minister of Defense," brought new legitimacy to the now prevalent practice of Christian sports stars using their status as a soapbox from which they evangelize. Never before had a Christian player combined such on-field achievement White was selected to the Pro Bowl a record 13 times with such outspoken proclamations of faith and unabashed proselytizing.

    Obituary
    Reggie White
Green Bay Packers football player known as the minister of defence - and offence
    Michael Carlson
    Thursday December 30, 2004
    The Guardian

Reggie White, who has died of heart failure aged 43, apparently due to a respiratory condition, was one of the greatest defensive players in American football history. He was known as "the minister of defence" because he was, indeed, an ordained minister. His community work and outspoken off-field relationship with the Lord were another side of the fierce competitive leadership he showed on the field. In 1993, White was one of the first players to take advantage of unfettered free agency. He showcased himself on a nationwide tour of teams, announcing that the Lord had instructed him to find an urban area where he could continue his inner-city ministry. He wound up signing an unprecedented, for a lineman, four-year $17million contract with the Green Bay Packers.
