http://library.thinkquest.org/12590/white.htm
White, Reggie (1961- )
American professional football player, one of the greatest defensive players in the National Football League (NFL). Playing the defensive-end position, White became noted for his ability to sack the quarterback (tackle the quarterback behind the line of scrimmage). Reginald Howard White was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and educated at the University of Tennessee. He joined the Memphis Showboats of the United States Football League (USFL) in 1984, recording 23.5 sacks over the next two seasons. White began playing for the Philadelphia Eagles of the NFL in 1985, joining the team during the season, after three games had already been played. He recorded 13 sacks in the 13 remaining games that year. Over the next three seasons he posted 18, 21, and 18 sacks, respectively. From 1989 to 1992 he remained a mainstay of the Eagles' defense, and in 1991 the team's defense ranked first in the NFL. In the early 1990s White became involved in the movement to establish unrestricted free agency in the NFL. After free agency was instituted in 1993, he signed a contract with the Green Bay Packers. The Packers had ranked 23rd in the NFL in defense in 1992, but they finished 2nd in the league in 1993, White's first season with the team. White played in the NFL Pro Bowl numerous times during his career. An ordained minister, he also became known for his humanitarian activities. He recorded a Super Bowl record 3 sacs in Super Bowl XXXI.

Reggie White, 1961-2004
The football community was stunned with the news of the untimely passing of NFL legend Reggie White Sunday morning. An autopsy Monday morning confirmed the 43-year-old future hall of famer died of respiratory failure caused by sleep apnea.
White, a two-time NFL defensive player of the year, terrorized pro quarterbacks throughout a career that started in 1984 with the Memphis Showboats in the USFL and continued with the Philadelphia Eagles, Green Bay Packers, and Carolina Panthers. He was selected to a record 13 consecutive Pro Bowls, and held the league's all-time sack record (198) when he retired in 2001.
White was one of the best, if not the best, defensive ends to ever play the game, and he will be eligible for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006. When that time comes, he is a lock to be selected.

In his four years with the Vols, Reggie White collected a school-record 32 sacks in establishing himself as the most prolific pass rusher in Tennessee history. The 1983 team captain drew little publicity until the sixth game of his senior year. By then, his domination was evident. He collected 100 tackles on the season, 72 of them unassisted, and set the school-record with 15 sacks for the year. He had a sack in every game but two and dropped the quarterback four times against The Citadel, another school record. White was named the SEC's Player of the Year and while earning consensus All-America and All-SEC honors. White was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2002. He retired as the NFL's all-time sack leader with 198.

Many of you are probably aware football defensive great, Reggie White, died recently.
What many do not know is that the man know as a the "Minister of Defense" was a mighty man of G-d, and a Messianic Believer.
While listening to Fox News as they announced Reggie's death, they mentioned that in his final years he had been studying Judaism. This statement probably confused many as they knew him as a fiery Baptist Preacher who tackled controversial issues like he tackled quarterbacks, head-on, from the Word of G-d.
During Reggie's last year in football, one of His friends had given him a teaching on Torah by Monte Judah. This teaching open Reggie's eyes to the mighty Hebrew Roots of Scripture and lead to study both Torah and Hebrew. According to Reggie, it opened his eyes to see Scripture as never before.

For a decade and a half, Reggie White dominated the National Football League as one of its most ferocious defensive players. White habitually struck terror into many an offense with his strength; he possessed speed, stamina, and the ability to size up situations for maximum impact. Former Philadelphia Eagles head coach Buddy Ryan once called White the "perfect defensive lineman...probably the most gifted defensive athlete I've ever been around." After eight seasons with the Eagles, in 1993 White signed a four-year, $17 million contract with the Green Bay Packers; it was an unprecedented amount for a defensive player. Upon his retirement from the NFL in 2001, White was credited with a record 198 career sacks; he had been named to the Pro Bowl an impressive 13 times in succession (although he failed to play in 1994 due to injury). In 1999, the Green Bay Packers retired White's jersey number (92) after his retirement from that team.

When I was in 11th grade, I participated in Reggie White's "Positive Student t-shirt Design Contest" here in Wisconsin. I ended up winning, and got to meet Reggie and Sara at Brookfield Square mall as well as received a bagfull of prizes. Inside was Reggie's autobiography, signed by him, Sara, and his two kids. At one point Reggie wrote: "use your talent to influence others for the good". I know Reggie White made some verbal mistakes along the way, but I think he had a really good heart and definitely used his talents to influence others for the good. Now I am 24 with a child of my own, but that is still regarded as the coolest thing that ever happened to me. My prayers to his wife and children and may he rest in peace.

Reggie White *Reggie White was born on this date in 1961. He was an African-American football player and minister.
From Chattanooga Tennessee, he graduated from Howard High School winning All-State in Basketball and All-American in Football and Basketball. He was player of the Year in Chattanooga and Player of the Year in the nation with Patrick Ewing as first runner-up. White was nicknamed the "Minister of Defense" (a dual reference to his football prowess and to his Evangelical Christian ordination) was one of the American football's most prolific defensive ends in college, the USFL and the NFL. He played football at the University of Tennessee, setting school records for most sacks in a career, season and game, records he still holds. After college, White signed on with the Memphis Showboats of the USFL, playing with them for two seasons, racking up 23.5 sacks, 192 tackles and seven forced fumbles in 34 starts.
After the USFL folded, White came to the NFL and was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles. He played with the Eagles for eight seasons, picking up 124 sacks and becoming the Eagles' all-time sack leader. He also set a (then) record season best with 21 sacks in 1987. In 1993, White went to the Green Bay Packers, where he played for six more seasons. There, White notched up another 68.5 sacks, becoming the Packers' all-time leader in that category. He also helped the Packers to two Super Bowls. White raised controversy in 1998 when he publicly condemned homosexuality. White, an ordained minister, spoke before the Wisconsin State Assembly, saying, "We've allowed this sin [homosexuality] to run rampant in our nation, and because it has run rampant in our nation, our nation is in the condition it's in today."
