Reggie White (1961-2004) On the mourning of Boxing Day, the nation was gripped in shock after learning that Reggie White, one of the greatest individuals to play the game of football, had died due to respiratory failure. He was only 43 years old. White’s death was initially speculated to be caused by a coronary thrombosis (heart attack), however, a preliminary autopsy has led medical examiners to believe that White's death was a result of respiratory problems, including sarcoidosis and sleep apnea. Known as the “Minister of Defense” partly because he was an ordained minister, and partly because he was arguably the greatest defender the game had ever seen. Wearing his characteristic Number 92 and playing the position of Defensive End, Reggie White was more a force of nature when he played, sweeping through to terrorize and intimidate his opponents. No other defender could single-handedly influence and impact a game the way that Reggie White could. Reggie White has received many accolades both on and off the football field. He achieved his fame on the football field as one of the most feared and intimidating players ever to play the game. Standing 6’5” and weighing 300 pounds, White was surprisingly fast and agile for a man of his stature. His physical abilities and intellectual prowess allowed him to dominate the game, with an astounding gamesmanship that remains unrivaled to this day. Even, towards the end of his career when he had lost a step or two, he could still be one of the most effective players found on the field.

White dies Sunday morning
ESPN.com news services Reggie White, a fearsome defensive end for the Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers who was one of the great players in NFL history, has died. White turned 43 on Dec. 19. White acknowledges the crowd when the Packers retired his number in 1999 then he unretired and played for Carolina in 2000. Through the family pastor, Sara White confirmed her husband's death. "Today our beloved husband, father and friend passed away," Sara White said through the pastor. "His family appreciates your thoughts and prayers as we mourn the loss of Reggie White. We want to thank you in advance for honoring our privacy." White died at Presbyterian Hospital, where he was taken after his wife called 911. A police officer was outside White's Tudor-style home in a gated community, and would not let a reporter approach the house. The cause of death was not immediately known. White, however, had a respiratory ailment for several years that affected his sleep, according to Keith Johnson, a pastor serving as family spokesman.

Memories of No. 92 ESPN.com As towering a presence as Reggie White was on the field, he was that much more impressive off the field. ESPN.com believes those who knew him are the best to truly describe White. Here are just some of the many things they had to say about the "Minister of Defense." Mike Golic Golic "Reggie White was the greatest defensive end of all time, but as great as he was on the field, he was that much greater off the field. I'd like to take a moment to tell you what kind of person Reggie White was. I had the pleasure to play with Reggie from 1987-1992, and those were five wonderful years because he was there. He was a man who led wherever he went whether it was on the football field or off it. When he chose a path, he stuck to it, and that's part of the reason why he was great on and off the field. He was one of my closest friends off the field, and I'm extremely sad that I'm here to have to eulogize such a great man. I will miss Reggie, and my thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, Sara, and his two lovely children."
