CENTRAL DISPATCH THE HAWAII FIVE-0 NEWSLETTER Volume 1 April 1999 Issue 2 Aloha, Wedey By Liz Clare Herman Wedemeyer, who played Duke Lukela on Hawaii Five-O, passed away on January 25, 1999. He was 74 years old. Wedemeyer appeared in seven episodes of Hawaii Five-O, including the first episode, "Full Fathom Five," in the first four seasons of the show before joining the cast at the beginning of the fifth season as Sgt. Duke Lukela of the Honolulu Police Department. In the eighth season Duke became a full-fledged member of the Five-O team. He was instantly recognizable for his glasses and silver-haired good looks, and became a fan favorite for his classy, no-nonsense manner. Many Five-O fans do not know that Wedemeyer’s stint as Duke was actually a footnote to an earlier and more glorious brush with national fame. In the 1940s, as a star halfback for St. Mary’s College of California, Wedemeyer (or Wedey, as he was known to his fans) became one of the nation’s leading sports celebrities. He was a two-time All-American, contended for the Heisman Trophy, and played in two major bowl games and two college All-Star games—an unprecedented achievement. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1979. His audacious. lightning-quick style of play earned him the nicknames "Squirmin’ Herman," "The Hawaiian Hurricane," and "The Hawaiian Centipede."

    History
The College Football Hall of Fame has a rather tangled, if not checkered, history. It began in 1947, when a group of Syracuse businessmen formed the National Football Foundation to promote the college sport in general, with establishing a hall of fame as one of its primary purposes. In a 1949 poll of college coaches, athletic directors, and sportswriters, Rutgers University was chosen as the site for the hall, because the first college football game (actually a soccer match) was played there in 1869. When the first induction, of 52 players and coaches, was held in 1951, the hall of fame existed only on paper - and it stayed on paper for more than 25 years. Arthur Evans, who had spearheaded the effort from the beginning, died shortly after that induction, and his successor, George E. Little, became seriously ill after taking over. As a result, the foundation was in disarray until it was reorganized in 1953 under the leadership of Admiral William "Bull" Halsey and sportswriter Grantland Rice.

One of the first Asian American football pioneers was Son Kai Kee who played for the Cal Bears in 1918.
During the 1940's, Babe Nomura played for San Jose State. For most Nisei (second generation Japanese Americans) student athletes, the internment of Japanese Americans into concentration camps during WW2 ended or delayed their participation in sports. Conkling and Francis Wai ( Francis Wai was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor by President Clinton for his heroism in WW2) both played for UCLA during the late 1930's and 1940's. Abe Dung played for Santa Clara University during the 1940s.
One of the early professional pioneers was a halfback named Walter Aichieu who played for the Dayton Triangles during the 1920's. Wally Yonemine played halfback and kick returner for the early San Francisco Forty Niners during the late 1940's. Yonemine later played and coached professional baseball in Japan during the 1950's. Al Lolotai Washington Redskins 1945. Football was a different game in those days since players went on both offense, defense and special teams. Helmets were made of leather and had no face masks. Broken noses and knocked out teeth were common.
In the 1970's-1980's quite a few Asians and Asian Pacific Islanders played football in college and in the pros. Many were of Samoan and Hawaiian decent. Some of the most notable were FB Mosi Tatupu USC and New England Patriots ( one time NFL rushing leader). Manu Tuiasosopu DT played in the Super Bowl (SF49ers vs Miami 1985). Others include Al Noga OLB Minnesota Vikings, kicker John Kim UCLA PAC 10 scoring leader, Micah Matsuzaki WR BYU, and Eion Hu running back Cornell (Ivy League leading rusher). Jesse Sapolu (Hawaii) offensive linemen for the Super Bowl Champion San Francisco 49ers. Sapulo has won four Super Bowl rings. The late Mark Tuinea OT for the Super Bowl Champion Dallas Cowboys. Dan Saleamua played nose tackle for Arizona State and the Kansas City Chiefs. One of the most notable coaches is Norm Chow offensive coach for BYU. Coach Chow was a key architect of the famous "West Coast Offense" at BYU.

Monday, October 13, 2003 College Football: Pickett 'better' pick it up By TED MILLER
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER They arrived together, limping into the Washington team room with self-consciously neutral expressions long after their teammates had bolted. Lingering reporters circled one and then the other. The pair, billed by some as potentially the best pass-catch combination in college football history, was separated by just a few steps, but judging by results the past two weeks, their lauded connection, if not broken, hangs by a tenuous thread. Against both UCLA and Nevada, Washington quarterback Cody Pickett and receiver Reggie Williams, both preseason All-Americans, were the second-best passing tandem on the field. There were bested first by Drew Olson and Craig Bragg, and then this past Saturday by Nevada's Andy Heiser and Maurice Mann, players with little name recognition outside their respective institutions. Most galling: Pickett, a three-year starter, has looked like the second-best quarterback on the field while playing opposite two underclassmen who began the season as backups.
