How Football Came To Brazil
A Miller's Tale The introducer of the British sport into Brazil
Charles William Milller Brazil is well known for its Carnival, its Beautiful Women and Football Whereas the first two of these items are bedded in early historical and cultural roots the third is much more recent dating back to the end of the last century. It is a tale of true sportsmanship and ideals of adventure and of course good fortune ... and starts with an expatriate named Miller who worked on the railway construction project in Sao Paulo together with some 3000 other immigrant families from the British Isles in the last decades of the 19th century. At that time the population of Sao Paulo City was 300,000. This was the golden age of industrial development. Today Sao Paulo is the third largest in the world with over 10 million inhabitants. Back to Mr. Miller who decided to send his young boy Charlie to England for a good all-round education. Charlie aged 10 soon after duly arrived at a school in Southampton called Bannisters in 1884. This was the beginning of a soccer apprenticeship by Brazil’s first player. Charles was a natural who quickly picked up the arts of this popular college game in England. The football association was being formed at the time. Eton, Rugby, Charterhouse and other colleges all had developed their own rules to the game. Indeed Rugby refused to drop the ball handling and went on to devise their own separate game.

John Charles Page 1 1. I never had the pleasure of seeing him play but even my father (who is not really interested in football) said he was one of the greatest player he had ever seen. It was fascinating reading his life story in last year's publication, which also helped raised money for Gol charity. It's a shame that although he was such a legend in Italy he didn't command the same status here in Wales and certainly not in the UK. In today's era where the media build up average players to be world beaters his impact on the game and the spirit in which he played doesn't make half these players fit to play the same game. With the Royal family handing out honours and knighthoods left, right and centre to certain people in British sport, somebody should take a long hard look at themselves and ask why did John Charles not die Sir John Charles? Let's hope he was at least able to enjoy watching Wales hammer Scotland 4-0 on Wednesday night. - Hedd Adams-Lewis 2. Met him once after the Germany game, and although he was being continually asked for autographs was very charming and obliged everyone. Will be sadly missed. -

Part 4 The Italian Job In the summer of 1962, John Charles was 31. He had proven himself an outstanding footballer at the very highest level, inspiring one of the most successful periods in Juventus' history and spearheading Wales' exciting and totally unexpected assault on World Cup glory in 1958. He had been in Italy for five years after a world record move from Leeds, but had decided that the time was right to move his young family back to England. Charles still had a soft spot in his heart for his adopted home in West Yorkshire and when he heard that Leeds United were interested in re-signing him, the Welshman had little doubt. Leeds were now back in the Second Division, and other offers were surfacing from First Division sides, but a new broom was sweeping through the Yorkshire club and Charles was excited by what he had seen at his old stomping ground. Former England inside forward Don Revie had left Sunderland to join Leeds as a player in November 1958 and had accepted the club's offer to become manager in 1961. He had started building a young side to be reckoned with and had signed former Scotland midfielder, Bobby Collins, to captain his new Leeds United. A youngster called Billy Bremner and Charles' old team mate

Local News Jeff Charles: The man behind the voice By JOHN SWARTZ, Sports Writer GREENVILLE -- "You can paint this one purple!" The line is as recognizable as "First down -- Pirates" when it comes to East Carolina football, and so is the voice of Jeff Charles. Charles, the play-by-play announcer for Pirates football, is eagerly awaiting the start of another football season. "I'm always excited about a new football season coming up," Charles said. "There's always that excitement and enthusiasm. The people here really get excited about it. I think the key word for this year is 'improvement.' We've got to find a way to improve; we've got to find a way to get back to Pirate football like we've had in years past." "This time of year, when I'm not doing as much on the air, I'm here in the office selling advertising," Charles said. "It's a 12-month deal, and we're always looking for the next advertiser, and we're always looking for the next station." "It's been a labor of love for a long time," Charles said. "I'm starting my 17th season here (at ECU). I decided when I was a junior in high school that I wanted to do this. You don't start as a sports caster; you start in a radio station sweeping up, or doing whatever you can. One thing led to another, and I got a chance to do sports in northern Indiana when I was in college. I worked at a radio station, WKAM, which did all kinds of games."

Charles Miller - the man who brought football to Brazil
Written by josh Brazil is the most fashionable country on the planet. Brazilian clothes, shoes, music, food, football.... from Gilberto Gil to Ronaldinho, havaianas to caipirinhas, Brazil is everywhere. But no one remembers the debt that Brazil owes to Britain – and to one British man, Charles Miller. In the 19th century, the British funded the Brazilian economy, built Brazil’s infrastructure - and taught Brazil how to play football.
Brazil was never part of the British Empire. However, a small but very influential group of Britons lived and worked in Brazil. British values, institutions, expertise and money permeated the country.
Even São Paulo, a provincial little town, plopped in the middle of uninteresting farmland - even that distant, dusty town had a stalwart British community which led a determinedly colonial existence.
In 1874, the chaplain of St Paul’s, the British church in São Paulo, registered the birth of a boy. The father was Scottish; the mother was English; the boy’s name was Charles William Miller.
Like many sons of British expatriates, Charles Miller went “back home” for his education. At the frail age of nine, he was put on a ship at Santos and sent to boarding-school in Southampton.

Super Sunday
January - the month that began with bowl games - Orange, Sugar, Cotton, Rose - and ended with a bowl - Super. In Baltimore, everybody talked about the Ravens, last year's champs. Could they do it again? Would they make it into the playoffs? On the last day of the season, they limped in. How would they do against the Dolphins in Miami? A week of speculation amounted to a week of agony and anticipation. The team just didn't seem to have the same chemistry they did a year ago, everybody lamented.
January was also the month of intensive mini-mester courses at the college, classes that met for four weeks, five days a week, six hours a day. The people who enrolled in these classes were usually trying to knock off a required course in as short a time as possible. They came to class like people going to work, carrying backpacks and briefcases, lunch bags, water bottles, cell phones, paperback novels, newspapers, steaming Styrofoam coffee mugs, bags with bagels, Danish, croissants. They came like they were settling in for the day, and they were.
Roger Castleman had a January mini-mester English 102 class, Introduction to Literature, a week and a day, more or less, devoted to poetry, to drama and to fiction. No sooner were the students sitting with pens poised over notebooks than Castleman was telling them about the ten-page paper they had to turn in twenty-five days from then on some topic of poetry or fiction and the final exam they would take the same day, how they would develop an appreciation and an understanding of the various literary genres and traditions, and develop critical approaches to their analysis and explication. Privately, Castleman thought they'd have enough trouble just reading all the stuff he'd assigned, let alone write lengthy arguments about what they'd read and thought about.

14 touchdowns, 75 games played, and 55 games started ‹ running back Charles Way was a hero for many of the Big Blue faithful who donned his jersey every Sunday. Way was a hero for many who watched New York Giants games for the past five years. A hard nosed running back who pounded it up the field, Way led the Giants to victory on numerous occasions. A critical member of the team, Way brought many intangibles to the table, such as hard work and leadership qualities.
Today, Way is a hero, but for Giants players. As Players' Program Coordinator, Way has tackled a new playing field, one on which he helps Giant players Œrun¹ their financial lives and plan their future careers. Giants' management recognized a need for someone like Way to come in and give team members a player's perspective on planning for the future. Way had what it took to be a mentor for other players: he'd experienced the ups and downs of life in the NFL, made a good salary, and he also had the smarts. He'd been voted to the Academic All-ACC first team selection in his junior year at the University of Virginia. He always had one eye on his future.
As a former player, Way knows what kinds of problems players confront. "Some players don't prepare financially for life after football, and that can get them into major problems," he told me during an interview at Giants Stadium. "Many players have a tendency to believe that they will have a couple more years to save money, so they spend what they have, never thinking that they could get injured at any time, and then what!" he added. It is Way's job to help players recognize that life after football isn't so easy, and players should be saving money yearly to help them build their future. Way also mentioned that all new players must attend a Rookie Symposium in which they are taught about life in the NFL, how to deal with money, how to handle the press, and other issues that revolve around their football fame. The symposium kicks off lots for the players to think about, and Way keeps the ball running.

CHARLES MANN At Nevada Reno, Charles was voted the most valuable defensive lineman in the Big Sky Conference in 1981 and 1982. As a senior, his 14 sacks led the conference. He finished third on his team with 76 tackles and was voted a Division l-AA All-American. When Charles Mann came into the NFL in 1983, his number one goal was to earn respect from his peers. He earned it with four Pro Bowl appearances to his credit. One of the most physical pass-rushers to play the game, Charles used his 6'6", 270 lbs. size and strength to overpower opponents. The Redskins' Defensive End recorded 14 1/2 sacks in 1985…his highest output in one year. However, even when he was not sacking the quarterback, he was still a threat, as his 31 quarterback hurries will attest. The twelve-year veteran, who led the Superbowl XXII-Champion Redskins with 10 sacks, had compiled 83 sacks in his career. Now, that Charles is off the field, he works as hard as he did when he was playing. Mann credits his faith for helping him keep a balance in life. He devotes a great deal of his time to the Good Samaritan Foundation, a organization that he and Art Monk, Tim Johnson, and Earnest Byner founded in 1993 to help restore hope in the inner city. He also finds time to make personal appearances, especially enjoying talking to the youth with a motivational message to reach for your own goals, and walk hand in hand with Christ.

Charles Showing Giants The Way Former Giants fullback helps prepares players for life after football. By Michael Eisen, Giants.com
May 26, 2004 EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Charles Way believes he should still be playing in the NFL. He looks at contemporaries like Sam Gash and Mike Alstott still playing well at fullback and knows he could still be a productive player. But Way's career with the Giants ended after only five seasons in 1999 because of a knee injury. Since then, Way has been the team's Director of Player Development. Way's job is to help prepare players for life after football. He stresses to each player that football careers are short, that players should complete their educations, learn how to manage their money and get ready for a post-football career. The most intriguing aspect of the Giants' program is the career internship. This year, Delvin Joyce interned for 10 weeks at Deutsch Inc., a leading New York advertising firm, Antwoine Womack worked for the Greg Norman Collection, a division of Reebok, and Scott Peters learned about financial planning at SmithBarney.

Introduction

As a long time fan of Charles Buchan's Football Monthly I have always tried to discover some kind of history of the magazine. No official reference exists and so what follows is my attempt at research into the background of this wonderful publication. If by chance there is someone out there with more information please get in touch so that I can add more background.
In the current climate football magazines struggle - Match of the Day has now published its final issue; Total Football's circulation is still trying for 30,000 copies sold.
Manchester United Magazine (IPC) has seen its circulation slump by 21% to 44,000 in 2002.
IPC's World Soccer hovers around the 55,000 mark and increased by 5% in 2002 and the new monthly format for Shoot has regenerated its figures with a 35% year on increase to 30,000.
World Soccer is the UK's leading international football title.

September 15, 2005 Ghosts Director Robert Wise is dead . He was a workmanlike director, capable with big sweeping musicals like West Side Story and The Sound of Music . But my favorite Wise picture is The Haunting , a spine-tingler about several human guinea pigs placed in a haunted house. Now, it feels dated and forced, but watching it as a kid on the Four O'Clock Movie, I was terrified. Coincidentally, I was watching The Grudge on HBO last night, a recent satisfying and creepy ghost picture from Japanese director Takashi Shimizu.
The Grudge. It got me to thinking about ghost pictures. They're a favorite because ghosts are equivocal. They may be friendly, they may be sinister. They may be trying to communicate, they may be trying to eat your face. They also may be the figment of a disturbed mind. And there is often a backstory supporting their existence. Here, quickly, are the five best ghost movies I've seen.

Text only Add to favourites Suggest similar pages FOOTBALLCULTURE ... Charles Miller (BBC) Bringing the Game to Brazil After ten years spent studying in England, Charles Miller returned to the country of his birth Brazil and was amazed that no-one knew how to play football. He educated the nation and his legacy still lives on, explains Ben Lyttleton. The birth of football in Brazil can be traced to 1894, the year 19-year-old Charles Miller disembarked at Santos port clutching two footballs. On the long voyage to Brazil, Miller had been practising his ball skills, dribbling from one end of the ship's deck to the other. His Scottish father John, a rail engineer based in Sao Paulo, had sent him to English boarding-schools for a decent education. All Charles had learnt in his ten years away were the rules of football. 'What have you got there, Charles?' said John when he saw him on the dockside for the first time. 'My degree,' came the reply. 'Your son has graduated in football.' Miller was amazed that no-one else knew the rules and, once the cricket season was over, divided friends and colleagues into two teams and taught them how to play. The first game, between expatriate employees from railway and gas companies, took place on land where the mules that pulled Sao Paulo's trains grazed. One journalist wrote in 1896: 'It gives them great satisfaction or fills them with great sorrow if this yellowish bladder enters a rectangle formed by the wooden posts.' Miller himself said: 'The general feeling at the time was, 'What a great little sport, what a nice little game.' Within six years, the Brazilians were playing the game alongside the English elite. 'I was asked to referee a game for small boys, which was 20-a-side,' Miller said. 'Even for this match about 1,500 people turned up.'

Click here to submit your question Christian Ehehalt of Stamford, Conn. ZEISE: As for the offensive line, it is wide open right now. The only sure thing seems to be that Charles Spencer will be an excellent left tackle and Mike McGlynn will be the right tackle. The rest of the line seems to be up in the air, although Jon Simonitis, Joe Villani and Neal Tracey seem to be holding down the other three line jobs right now and Simonitis is a two-year starter so you'd think he'll rise to the top at right guard fairly quickly. Expect a lot of change here because this is an area of emphasis with this staff. There will be some shuffling going on until they find the right mix of the best five players. Coach Wannstedt said earlier this year he wouldn't be surprised if one or more of the young kids, like John Brown or John Bachman, finds his way into the lineup so that should give you some insight as to just how wide open the offensive line is. Q: I read the Blue-Gold game is going to be April 16 but where is it going to be held?

My son and his fiancee are getting married soon, and I have serious questions about the ceremony. My son is 28 and very successful. His fiancee is 26 and is a very intelligent, successful woman. They have been together many years, living together for the last three. The problem is not their relationship, but my son and his intended are both witchesthat's right, witchesand they are having a "handfasting," a witchcraft wedding ceremony. My wife and I are devout Catholics, and it seems that going to a pagan ceremony goes against all our religious beliefs. Even one of the elder priests in our parish said it would be against God to attend such an event, though a younger priest said as long as we didn't take part in the ceremony, it would be OK. I know my son doesn't believe in Satan or evil. He's a very good boy, and I'm proud of him. He has even allowed me to read the ceremony that will be performed. Actually, it's just about the most beautiful ceremony I've ever read, but I'm very confused. Should I possibly go against my faith to support my son by attending a pagan rite, or should I alienate my son because of my own religious beliefs? Any advice would be appreciated.
