The Biggest Group of Losers Ever!
And now, for the part 1 of the fantasy draft:
The Home Team:
The Biggest 1st Round Draft Busts of the Past Twelve Years
Cornerback: When I was playing flag football in 1998 on Boston Common with the other workers from Niketown, I blew a coverage on a deep out and got burned. My nickname all week was Chris Canty, the frequently toasted cornerback who the Patriots selected with the twenty-ninth pick in 1997. Paring him with Bryan Westbrook, who was taken by the Lions with the fifth selection in 1997, would be one of the most passer-friendly defensive backfields that the NFL has ever seen. Safety: George Teague, who the Packers took at twenty-nine in 1993, was never as good as he should have been. I heard Chris Canty played safety once so we get to put him on this list twice!

Q: If I take a Running Back drafted in this year's first round for my fantasy team, how likely is it that he'll be a stud? A: This is a key concern for fantasy players, and there were two Running Backs drafted in the first round in the 2002 draft. William Green (#16 pick) goes to Cleveland and T.J.Duckett (#18) goes to Atlanta, where both players will likely have to share playing time. In this feature we'll look at this strictly from the standpoint of how RB's drafted in the first round do in their rookie season: Running Backs drafted in the first round from 1990-2001 Yr Player Pick

The NCAA News October 25, 1999 Stinchcomb, Schade win academic honors in fall sports Former University of Georgia offensive lineman Matt Stinchcomb and Kelly Schade, a softball player from Simpson (Iowa) College, were chosen as the 1998-99 GTE Academic All-America of the Year Team Members for all sports. The selections were announced following a special committee voting of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Stinchcomb was the recipient in the university (Divisions I-A and I-AA) division and Schade earned the honors for the college (Divisions II and III) division. Stinchcomb was a two-time all-American at Georgia and a finalist for the 1998 Lombardi Award as the nation's top lineman. He also was a two-time GTE Academic All-America team member and was the Oakland Raiders' first-round selection (18th overall) in the 1999 National Football League draft. He suffered a shoulder injury in the preseason and will miss the entire 1999 NFL season. Schade was one of the top pitchers in the history of NCAA softball. In 1999, she pitched 25 shutouts and recorded 37 wins and 371 strikeouts, all Division III records. She also hurled two shutouts and won four games in the Division III Women's Softball Championship, leading her team to its second national title in three years. Presently a member of the Virginia Roadsters of the WPASL, she graduated with a degree in economics and was also a GTE Academic All-American for two seasons. To be eligible for the GTE Academic All-America Team, an athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve and maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.200 (4.000 scale). Throughout the 1998-99 academic year, a GTE Academic All-America Team Member of the Year was named in each of 10 programs (football, volleyball, men's and women's basketball, baseball, softball, men's and women's fall at-large and men's and women's spring at-large) in the university and college divisions. Stinchcomb and Schade were chosen from among those 20 finalists.

Marino puts more fans in the seats
By Mark Kreidler Bee Sports Columnist CANTON, Ohio - Great moments in sporting history: As he jogged out to take his place on the field for the first start of his career as an NFL quarterback in 1983, Dan Marino was stopped by veteran Miami safety Lyle Blackwood. "I just wanted to say good luck, Dan," Blackwood told him, as Marino remembered it Sunday. "And not to put any pressure on you, but if you play bad, we'll lose." Thus inspired, Marino took his game to such heights that he ultimately became a first-ballot inductee into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. But beyond that, he brought an entire Miami fan base along for the ride. A bunch of it showed up in Canton, transforming Fawcett Stadium into the aqua and orange equivalent of a Dolphins home game. Everywhere Marino looked, he saw tributes to his past, with No. 13 jerseys littering the 21,000-plus in attendance.

    http://www.rpweld3.com/reviews/redzone.html
    Red Zone
Setting: The modern world of American Football. Build a team and set it up against your opponent's.
Game Play: Lousy. Drafting a team is easy and cool. Players take turns picking their favorite cards out of their deck with the only restriction being that you cannot use someone that your opponent already has in play. That's where the joy ends. First, you do a kickoff, where one player flips the top card of his deck and reads the K value in yards. The other player flips the top card of his deck and reads the KR value. Calculate where the ball is for the first play using the formula K-20+KR = Ball. Now, let's see what the first play is. Put any one play card in your hand facedown on the table. Your opponent will play a card from his hand which has a defense on it. You each reveal these cards and then flip a card off your decks.
Your card tells us what color your play was. His card tells him what color his defense was. Now we look at one of the two 3-page charts included in the game and compare your Green Fullback Drive to his Yellow Stunt defense and we get a number. The number is 2. That is how many yards the ball moved forward. That is all explained in the first 12 pages of the rulebook. After that come 32 more pages explaining what to do if you get a letter code (DL, LB, OL, RB, WR, F, Long, INC, INT, DB, DL*, LB*, or QB).
Using each and every one of these codes allows you to simulate interceptions, tackles, fumbles and injuries just like a real game of professional football. And it will take longer than a real game of professional football to do it. This game is for stats-obsessed football junkies who are living without power. It is hideously complex and involves a lot of table-checking. Apparently they forgot to write in any action or excitement.

September 12, 2004 Endangered Species A racial dividing line exists at the running back position,
and there doesn't seem to be a clear reason why. By Chris Harry and Charles Robinson
Sentinel Staff Writers Chicago Bears running back Brock Forsey knew they would come. He and his agent had discussed it on numerous occasions Forsey being white and all. By the time he gouged the Arizona Cardinals for 134 yards in a game last season, Forsey had an idea of what awaited. People would want to ask him about being a white running back about what it was like to be the NFL's version of the bearded lady. Fifty-eight years after the NFL's reintegration, Forsey had become the once-in-an-eon celestial event, a quizzical and momentary rarity in a league spinning on an axis of speed and agility. An anomaly in a sport that in 2004 features no white running backs on active NFL rosters, two white starters among the 117 Division I-A college programs and precious few legitimate I-A prospects in the nation's high schools. This year, last year, 10 years ago little has changed.

For PC football fans, it's become almost a given that you can't have impressive on-field action and realistic league and simulation results in the same football simulation. Front Page Sports: Football Pro? Great league management, a vast array of coaching options, and solid simulation results - but anemic play on the gridiron. Madden NFL 98? Addictive gameplay and pulse-pounding drama on the field - and merely average coaching and league-play features away from it. NFL GameDay 99 is no exception. If you're looking for a simulation that lets you use real-life lineups, create custom leagues, or launch a career that spans several seasons, you're out of luck here. But if you're in search of the most realistic - and consequently most challenging - on-field play you can find in a football simulation, GameDay 99 is at the head of the class. There are lots of reasons for GameDay 99's success on the field, but the biggest is the artificial intelligence (AI) programming of the computer-controlled opponents. If you think you can rip off big chunks of yardage by running the same play over and over again, you've got another thing coming. The defenses really do adjust to your play-calling tendencies, and gamers accustomed to steamrolling even powerhouses like San Francisco and Green Bay in other action-oriented games will be a little miffed to learn that it's just not gonna happen here. Your only hope for scoring success in GameDay 99 is the same as in the NFL: Establish a balanced attack and stick with it as long as possible.
