A TRIBUTE TO JOHNNY UNITAS:
By Darrell Carter
T In 1955, Johnny Unitas was drafted in the ninth round by the Pittsburgh Steelers with the 102nd pick in the National Football League annual draft. The former University of Louisville quarterback was cut before the season started. Then, in 1956, he was signed as a free-agent backup for the Baltimore Colts for $7,000. Several games into the season, the first-string quarterback went down to injuries, and Unitas replaced him. The rest is, as they say, history. As a child, like hundreds of thousands of other Baltimore fans, I remember well the thrill of watching him throw passes to John Mackey. John Unitas served his sport with elegance and great appreciation for the art of the game. His hunched shoulders, crew-cut hair, bowlegged physique, and high top shoes became the talk of the league, though his true signature echoed on the playing field, Sunday after Sunday. I had the honor of meeting him on several occasions, and can say that he was a gentle man, as well as a gentleman. When the former Cleveland Browns moved to Baltimore and became the Ravens, he embraced the team as if they were his own. In contrast, he refused to participate in activities related to the Baltimore Colts after his old team left town in the middle of the night and headed for Indianapolis. This contrast showed his allegiance to Baltimore, and his love for the game and for good sportsmanship.

Sept. 12, 2002 Unitas was unusual in that off the field he had probably ordinary intelligence, yet on the field he was Albert Einstein. His feel for football, his ability to read and react to defenses, and his play-calling was second to none. In those days, the quarterback ran the game and called the plays. When Weeb Eubank, his coach with the Colts, left and was replaced by Don Shula, there was immediate conflict. Eubank just left the offense to Unitas, whereas Shula wanted input into it. Shula and Unitas did not get along, but they coexisted for a number of years. However, the relationship was never quite what it should have been. Great defensive players like Hall of Famers Deacon Jones and Sam Huff will not say anything bad about Unitas and will call him possibly the greatest competitor they ever played against. Bart Starr, who was a contemporary and one of the great quarterbacks of all time, always had great admiration for Unitas as well.

Johnny Unitas not only invented the modern quarterback he invented the modern NFL BY BILL PETERSON Some years ago, the great Johnny Unitas said one didn't really become a quarterback until he could tell the coach to go to hell. Surely, though, Unitas knew it took more than that. Lots of guys tell the coach to go to hell, and they'll never be Johnny Unitas. To be Johnny Unitas, after all, one would have to be somewhat more than what passes today for a complete quarterback. Today's complete quarterback calls no plays; he executes and improvises on the dictates of the coaches, who do the planning. Just as Franklin Delano Roosevelt won World War II with less staff than Hillary Rodham Clinton employed as First Lady, yesteryear's football greats made do with a lot less advice. Today's head football coach rises through the ranks to a position from which he handles the media and hires a large staff, which he organizes and directs. Among the coach's underlings are chiefs of staff for the offense, defense and special teams. While the football team always has been directed from the top down, the distance from top to down has increased, which has decreased the responsibilities of the quarterback.

You couldn't help but pick Johnny Unitas out of a football crowd. And you couldn't help but admire his extraordinary ability to pick apart defenses with commanding, unwavering confidence. He never backed down from anybody over 18 NFL seasons, building an unsurpassed reputation for toughness while gaining status as one of the most fabled stars in league history. Johnny U. was a master craftsman, an unlikely looking athlete who overcame physical limitations with impressive intangibles. He wasn't fast, but he knew when and how to run. His arm was not as strong as some, but he threw with remarkable touch and timing. Most of all, Unitas had courage, coolness under fire and the ability to lead, a quality Baltimore teammate John Mackey acknowledged when he said, "It's like being in the huddle with God."

  • The first pro football player Before Johnny Unitas, college stars were the only famous football players. The great No. 19 changed that forever and took the NFL to the top. By Allen Barra For many of us, Johnny Unitas was the first pro football player. I mean that in several senses. He was the first pro football player many of us knew, the first to be mentioned at the dinner table along with Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays and Yogi Berra, perhaps not as famous as them, but ... How shall I phrase this? The first pro football player whose name your mother knew. He was the first pro football player whose picture we recognized that crew cut looked like something he'd been born with the first football player whose number, 19, we wore, and the first one whose throwing style (right shoulder hunched down, both hands gripping the ball as he dropped back to throw) we tried to imitate like the windups of Sandy Koufax and Juan Marichal.

Thursday, September 12, 2002 Farewell, Johnny U Hall of Fame Quarterback Johnny Unitas died yesterday of a heart attack . Growing up, Johnny U was my idol. I dreamed of few things more than being a quarterback, and Unitas was the best. A master at staying in the pocket until the last possible moment, and then delivering the ball so that only his intended receiver could get to it, Unitas defined what a quarterback should be. The tight spirals, the nerves of steel, the willingness to take the punishment if it meant making a play- Unitas was the whole package. Unitas led the Colts to NFL titles in 1958 and '59, helped them win Super Bowl V, was chosen to five all-league teams and was Player of the Year three times. He played in 10 Pro Bowls. He threw at least one touchdown pass in 47 consecutive games, an NFL record that began in his rookie year. When he led Baltimore to a 23-17 overtime victory over the New York Giants in the 1958 championship, a game often proclaimed as football's greatest, Unitas boosted the sport's popularity.
