Dec. 28, 1958: A legend is born

The Baltimore Colts liked to say they acquired Johnny Unitas for 80 cents, the price of a phone call from Baltimore to Pittsburgh. That's true, but the real story was what Unitas was doing in Pittsburgh, running a pile driver and playing for a semipro team called the Bloomfield Rams. He'd been cut the year before by the Steelers, who waited until the ninth round of the 1955 NFL draft to choose the former walk-on at Louisville. When the Steelers cut Unitas, team owner Art Rooney wanted to know the reason. Rooney favored local kids, and Unitas had gone to high school in Pittsburgh. "Aw," a member of the coaching braintrust told Rooney, "he's too dumb to remember the plays."

The halftime dedication celebration of the university's homecoming game against the College of the Holy Cross, of Worcester, Mass., will include tributes to Johnny U. from Maryland Governor Robert L. Ehrlich, Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith and former Baltimore Colts star running back Tom Matte. The game begins at 1 p.m. ET. In April, Towson University sought to fulfill Sandra Unitas' dream to name its newly renovated and expanded stadium for one of Baltimore's most famous and revered legends and one of the greatest football players of all-time by christening it Johnny Unitas Stadium. At that time, Sandra Unitas also kicked off a campaign to raise the final $5.25 million of the $32 million stadium project cost. The renovations included seating for 11,000 fans, a 48,000-square-foot field house, an expanded concourse and concession area, and a larger, modernized press box. The money raised through donations from private corporations and the public is being used to subsidize the cost of the renovations, which otherwise would have been covered by the sale of the stadium's naming rights.

Johnny Unitas Award Finalists
For so many years the Unitas has been a pre-cursor to the Heisman and it looks like it could be that way this year. Looking at the candidates, there's a couple of rocket arms, a couple of future pros, and a couple of over-rated guys. Here's my rundown and you tell me why I'm wrong: Rockets: J.P. Losman (Tulane) and B.J. Symons (Texas Tech)

These guys never met a pass pattern they didn't like and couldn't throw. Incredible arm strenghth (and arm endurance!) Losman might make it to the pros but I seriously doubt it. Symons out to be a Heisman front-runner because he's got a great shot to re-write a lot of records in the NCAA.
Future Pros: Eli Manning (Ole Miss), Jon Navarre (Michigan), Philip Rivers (NC State), and Matt Schaub (Virginia)
These guys are the real deal. Eli is no Peyton, but that's more of a compliment to Peyton than a knock on Eli. Navarre is a great leader and will make a fine backup in the pros. Rivers and Schaub are exceptional QBs and at least one of them is going to be a starter on Sundays.
Over-rated: Jason White (Oklahoma)
Here's the skinny: White is an average QB with a lot of guts. It works for him, but he's the least capable passer of all the other candidates. On a roster, he would backup any of the other six candidates. Yes, White has some numbers, but that mere fact that he needs a walker to get from the huddle to the line ought to tell you a little something about the help he gets from his offensive line. If anyone in this mix benefits from the system they're playing in, it's White. No disprespect, but he is probably just one of the top 20 QBs in college ball. There's no place for this guy in the NFL. He's the Sooners version of Major Applewhite.

He was the first to throw for 40,000 yards in his career and now ranks seventh, surpassed by a group of quarterbacks who played in an era when the rules made passing easier. Unitas retired after the 1973 season holding 22 records, including most passes attempted and completed and most touchdown passes. Send your tributes and memories of Unitas' glorious career. I was 11-years-old when I first saw him play - I am now 55. He was brilliant as a strategist, and tough as a river dock street fighter. The modern steroid loaded players on artificial turf couldn't hold a candle to him.

Unitas died in September at age 69. Now his statue also may serve as a memorial to a man who never forgot his alma mater as he achieved unprecedented glory in professional football. While he left U of L almost 50 years ago, he remained an important part of the institution, both as a symbol of pride and as an active fund raiser and occasional recruiter. Never flamboyant or boastful, Unitas played football with a confidence that always seemed to get the job donethoroughly and quietly. A pure drop-back passer, Unitas was the first to throw for 40,000 yards and now ranks seventh on the all-time list, surpassed only by a group of quarterbacks who played several more games each season under rules that make passing easier. Unitas retired after the 1973 season with 22 NFL records, among them marks for most passes attempted and completed, most passing yardage, most touchdown passes and most seasons leading the league in TD passes. He completed 2,830 of 5,186 passes for 40,239 yards and 290 touchdowns. He threw at least one TD pass in 47 straight games, a record not challenged since it was set from 1956 to 1960. In 1987 Frank Gitschier, who recruited Unitas to U of L in 1950 when larger schools passed on him, persuaded Unitas to lend his name to the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award. The award annually honors the top senior quarterback in college football.

Golden arm taught me so much
By GARY SHELTON, Times Sports Columnist Bart Starr, my friend said. Bart Starr, my friend said. Johnny Unitas, said I. At the time, I was very young, and there was much about the NFL I did not know. But I knew this. I knew about Johnny U. I knew about the high-top shoes and the flat-top hair and the No. 19 jersey. I knew about the Golden Arm. Like a lot of people my age, I fell in love with professional football because I fell in love with the way Unitas threw a football. It was simple as that. He used the football the way Zorro used a sword, the way Robin Hood used a bow. It seemed like a rite of passage that, when you were through with them, you graduated to him. He was a little old for me, to tell the truth. He was the quarterback of, say, the older brothers on the block. The kids my age talked about other quarterbacks, of Starr and Roman Gabriel, of Daryle Lamonica and John Hadl. We were children of the '60s. Unitas was the quarterback who made the NFL great in the '50s. Still, the pictures on the wall of my room were of Unitas, cut from magazines and glued there. There was nothing pretty about Unitas. When he dropped back in the pocket, it was like watching an ostrich try to dance the Lambada. He had ugly hair, spindly legs and a crooked grin.

    Johnny Unitas: 1933-2002
Pure leadership: Evolving eras make it difficult to compare all-time quarterbacks, but "Johnny U.' always is in the discussion.
Compiled from Times wires published September 12, 2002 Johnny Unitas, who rose from a $6-a-game sandlot player to become perhaps professional football's greatest quarterback, died Wednesday in suburban Baltimore. He was 69. Mr. Unitas had a heart attack while working out at a physical therapy center in Timonium, Md., Vivienne Stearns-Elliott, a spokeswoman for St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson, told The Associated Press. Mr. Unitas had triple bypass surgery in 1993 after a heart attack. When he retired after the 1973 season after 18 years in the NFL the first 17 with the Baltimore Colts Mr. Unitas had a big part of the record book to himself. He led the Colts to three NFL championships. He was the first quarterback to pass for more than 40,000 yards in a career. From 1956 to 1960, he completed at least one touchdown pass in 47 consecutive games, still the record.
