Encyclopedia Article Multimedia 1 item Unitas, Johnny (1933-2002), American professional football player, voted the most valuable player (MVP) of the National Football League (NFL) in 1959, 1964, and 1967. John Constantine Unitas was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and attended the University of Louisville, where he was a standout quarterback. After graduating in 1955 he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers of the NFL, but the team released him before the season began. After playing semi-professional football for a year, Unitas signed with the Baltimore Colts in 1956. The quarterback led the Colts to the NFL championship in 1958, 1959, and 1968, although following this last championship the Colts lost the 1969 Super Bowl to the New York Jets, who had won the 1968 American Football League (AFL) championship. The NFL and AFL merged in 1970, and Unitas guided the Colts to a Super Bowl victory in 1971. Throughout his career he set a number of passing records, including the most consecutive games with a touchdown pass (47). He was traded to the San Diego Chargers in 1972 and retired in 1974 with a total of 40,239 career passing yards and 290 touchdowns. Unitas was voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1979.

Johnny Unitas, the Hall of Fame quarterback who broke nearly every NFL passing record and won three championships with the Baltimore Colts in an 18-year career, died of a heart attack Wednesday at age 69. Here are several memories of Johnny U., quarterback for the NFL's All-Time team: Unitas Remembered He was one of the toughest competitors I ever knew, and overcame tremendous odds to become one of the greatest players in NFL history. It was his toughness that enabled him to stay in the pocket until the last moment before releasing the ball, and that always gave his receivers that much more time to get open. I always felt that he invented the two-minute drill. He seemed to have a clock in his head and always knew how much time he had to work with. That skill was most evident in the NFL Championship Game in 1958, when he beat the Giants in overtime in a game that captured the country's attention and helped make the NFL the premier sports league in America. He was the first of the great modern quarterbacks, and his performance set the standard for everyone who followed him at that position. Don Shula, former

Unitas had a heart attack while working out at a physical therapy center in the Baltimore suburb of Timonium, said Vivienne Stearns-Elliott, a spokeswoman for St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson. Doctors and nurses at the scene could not resuscitate him, she said. Unitas underwent emergency triple-bypass surgery in March 1993 after a heart attack. "Johnny U," with his trademark crewcut and black hightops, was the first to throw for 40,000 yards and now ranks seventh, surpassed by a group of quarterbacks who played after him, with rules that make passing easier. Unitas retired after the 1973 season with 22 NFL records, among them marks for most passes attempted and completed, most yards gained passing, most touchdown passes and most seasons leading the league in TD passes.

Johnny Unitas Position:
Quarterback Years: Only one University of Louisville football number has been retired. No. 16 will never be worn again by a Louisville Cardinal because it belongs to Johnny Unitas. As a matter of fact, Unitas did not even wear 16 after he left U of L. The quarterback wore 19 for his entire professional career. Five games into Johnny Unitas’ freshman season (Unitas was allowed to play as a freshman because U of L didn’t belong to the NCAA), head coach Frank Camp knew he had something unique. Tossed in against St. Bonaventure when U of L was trailing 19-0, Unitas completed 11 consecutive passes, three for TDs, in a steady rain and helped put the Cards in front 21-19.

The BellSouth Johnny Unitas Football Museum is located in the football training facility at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium. BellSouth, Louisville's leading telecommunications provider, contributed $500,000 to help create the museum that celebrates the tradition of Cardinal football. The museum, which bears the name of former U of L and NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Johnny Unitas, is housed in the football complex located in the open end zone of the horseshoe-shaped stadium. The 2,000-square foot facility features a cathedral ceiling and balcony area. Exhibits include past U of L greats, a history of the sport at U of L, and a digital video theatre. A glass wall makes the museum visible to stadium visitors. A statue of Unitas was erected as an external focal point of the museum with Frederick Kail of Lutherville, Md., commissioned to produce the sculpture. Kail's work includes a bronze portrait of Johnny Unitas as a tribute from the Baltimore Colts' fans in 1973, the first sculptural rendition of the famous "Peanuts" comic strip characters for Charles Schultz and United Features Syndicate in 1962, and many lacrosse creations.

Notre Dame thought Johnny Unitas was too small. The Pittsburgh Steelers thought he wasn't smart enough. The Baltimore Colts got it right. Unitas, 6-feet and 145 pounds in high school, became a nowhere-to-somewhere story, a backup who kept getting opportunities to succeed at every level. Give me a chance, the crew-cut quarterback would say, and I'll show you. He went from semi-pro dirt fields to stardom with the Colts in the National Football League. And he did it quickly. Three-time MVP Johnny Unitas holds a special place in Baltimore fans' hearts. "The most important thing of all about Unitas," said Weeb Ewbank, his Colts' coach, "is that he had a real hunger. This was a kid who wanted success and didn't have it so long that he wasn't about to waste it when it came." Unitas led the Colts to NFL titles in 1958 and '59, was chosen to five all-league teams and was Player of the Year three times. He played in 10 Pro Bowls. He threw at least one touchdown pass in 47 consecutive games, an NFL record streak that began in his rookie year. When he led Baltimore to a 23-17 overtime victory over the New York Giants in the '58 championship, a game often proclaimed as football's greatest, Unitas boosted the sport's popularity.

The Steelers had waited so long to let him go that it was too late for a chance of being drafted anywhere else. Johnny was left to construction work and the Bloomfield Rams, a semi-pro team that had to sprinkle its field with oil before every game to keep the dust down - since there was no grass to do it. Finally, one fateful day in February of 1956, the lucky call came. The Baltimore Colts were interested in what Johnny might be able to do for them. They saw. They liked. They bought. The $7,000 contract was a far cry from the $3 a game he had been making n his dusty field. So began a 17-year career with the Colts. The 1958 title game in which Unitas took the Colts on two 80-yard drives to beat the New York Giants 23-17 is considered by many as the greatest pro football game ever played. Johnny U. retired in 1973 after one year with the San Diego Chargers. He left behind him records for: most pass attempts (5,186); most completions (2,830); most total yards (40,239); most touchdowns (290); most 300-yard games (26); and most consecutive games throwing touchdown passes (47). He led the Colts to one Super Bowl Crown, three NFL championships, and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1979.
