King Gustav V of Sweden: "Sir, you are the greatest athlete in the world."
Jim Thorpe (reportedly): "Thanks, king."
Thorpe, a full-blooded American Indian, was named the best male athlete of both the half-century and century. He is a member of the pro football and track and field halls of fame. A town was renamed for him (Jim Thorpe, Pa.) near where he starred in football for what then was known as the Carlisle Indian School. A movie starring Burt Lancaster was made of his life. The U.S. Postal Service issued a stamp bearing his likeness in 1998. The following year, the House of Representatives passed a resolution declaring him the greatest athlete of the century.
Could, say, Bo Jackson or Deion Sanders equal all that?
Forget it.

Said Jim, seriously: "We were raised on canned condensed milk and we ran out of cans."
Yet his greatest fame was achieved between the two football seasons and far, far from home.
Then came the decathlon, a three-day event from July?13 to 15. He placed fourth or better in all 10 events and finished 700 points ahead of his nearest rival.
"I hope I will be partly excused by the fact that I was simply an Indian schoolboy and did not know I was doing wrong," his letter read.
How unfair were the two governing bodies? Wrote the customarily gentle Rice more than 40 years later, "They merely robbed the Indian in cold-blooded fashion. ... The treatment accorded Thorpe, in my opinion, is one of the cruel turns of all American sport."
Thorpe played for six pro teams before retiring in 1928 at 41, but none won a championship. After Stockholm, it seemed, everything was downhill.
Thorpe had four children with each of his first two wives, but his heavy drinking contributed to the breakup of both marriages. He went from job to job and during the Depression of the 1930s often played an Indian chief in the movies.

Williams Named to Thorpe Watch List
List is second to which junior defensive back has been named July 27, 2004 OKLAHOMA CITY
- The leading candidates for the 2004 Jim Thorpe Award have been announced in a preseason watch list released by the Jim Thorpe Association. Virginia Tech junior cornerback Jimmy Williams is one of 29 college players on the list. It marks the second preseason list the junior from Hampton has been named to, as he is also a preseason candidate for the Bronko Nagurski Defensive Player of the Year. The Thorpe Award, presented annually to the nation's best college defensive back, is one of college football's most sought after and prestigious awards. It is named after history's greatest all-around athlete, a man who excelled as a running back, passer and kicker on offense, but also was an awesome defensive back. Recognized in the Pro Football Hall of Fame simply as "The Legend", Thorpe also played professional baseball and won Olympic gold medals in the decathlon and pentathlon. The watch list will be narrowed to 10 semifinalists the first Monday in November and then to three finalists the Monday before Thanksgiving. The winner will be announced on ESPN's College Football Awards Show, telecast from Disney World on Dec. 9. The official presentation of the award will be in Oklahoma City on Feb. 8.

Statistics also showed that most female teachers in the state were paid less than one-half the salary of their male counterparts.

We are now into the year 2000 and as we begin the new millennium it is important for us to appreciate the history of sport in our country by cherishing some of the relics from the past. For this column, my first in the New Year, I will highlight a few recent additions to the fabulous collection that we have been able to assemble here at the MCI National Sports Gallery. He was born near Prague, Indian Territory (now in Oklahoma), and educated at Haskell Institute, in Lawrence, Kansas, and at Carlisle Indian School. His full name was James Francis Thorpe, but his original Native American name was Wa-tho-huck (“Bright Path”); his parents were of Sac (Sauk) and Fox ancestry. In 1907, his first year at Carlisle, young Thorpe displayed remarkable prowess in football and track and won the attention of Pop Warner , then Carlisle's coach of these sports. Thorpe performed brilliantly on the varsity football team, but in 1909 he withdrew from the school and went to North Carolina. There he worked as a farmhand and played semiprofessional baseball. Returning to Carlisle in 1911, Thorpe played halfback on the football team, contributing largely to Carlisle victories over some of the most powerful teams in the country. In 1911 and 1912 he made the All-American team. Thorpe excelled during this period in many other sports, including
