Jim Thorpe's daughter trying to resuscitate father's legend By BLAIR KERKHOFF - The Kansas City Star
    Date: 03/27/99 20:00
About three years ago, Grace Thorpe sensed trouble brewing by the end of the century, and it had nothing to do with a computer chip. "I heard some talk about the greatest athlete of the century and nobody was mentioning dad," Thorpe said. "I thought, `Hey, I better do something about this.' " Thus began Grace Thorpe's quest to restore her father, Jim Thorpe, to the public's sporting conscience. As an Olympic hero, an All-America football player, a founder of the NFL and a major league baseball player, Thorpe's credentials are well-established. Still... "People were talking about everybody but dad," Grace Thorpe said. "I heard somebody say Deion Sanders was the greatest all-around athlete ever, and, well, dad just shouldn't be forgotten." He has over the second half of the century, except for the well-publicized effort to have his Olympic medals returned. But in 1950, Thorpe overwhelmingly outpolled the likes of Babe Ruth, Red Grange and Jack Dempsey in an Associated Press poll to name the greatest athlete of the half-century.

Dubbed Wa-tho-huck (Bright Path) by his Pottowatomie mother, Thorpe attended several Indian schools, struggling with academics but finding his path in sports, and emerging as the 20th century's most widely gifted. . .athlete. Nelson switches to a less-stylized, mystical look for the illustrations, depicting Thorpe growing from lad to burly manhood, chasing down a jackrabbit, standing downcast at lonely or sad moments, dashing past rival runners or football players as he flashes a faint restrained smile. JIM THORPE DECATHLON (Inducted 1975) Born May 28, 1888, Shawnee, Okla. Died February 28, 1953. Acknowledged as perhaps the greatest athlete of the 20th century and perhaps of all-time, James "Jim" Thorpe excelled in every sport he attempted. His track prowess became apparent at Carlisle Indian School and his performances at the 1912 Olympic Games still remain some of the greatest Olympic feats of all time. A Sac-Fox Indian, he won both the 1912 Olympic decathlon and pentathlon, setting a world record in the former event, although it was the first and only time he ever competed in it. In individual competition, he was fourth in the high jump and seventh in the long jump. His performances, however, were blemished when it was revealed he had played semi-pro baseball in 1911, thus stripping him of the Olympic medals and the Olympic and world records. It wasn't until 1983 that Thorpe's medals were reinstated. Besides track, Thorpe also played college and professional football and was one of the first stars of the National Football League, being a member of both the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame. He also played major league baseball with several teams. He was elected to the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame in 1983.

    JIM THORPE:
    LEGEND AND LEGACY
Michael D. Koehler I hope I will be partly excused by the fact that I was simply an Indian schoolboy and I did not know all about such things." With the help of Pop Warner, his coach, and Moses Friedman, the Superintendent of the Carlisle Indian School, Jim Thorpe wrote the above in a letter to the Amateur Athletic Union, following accusations that he had violated his amateur standing. During the summer of 1909, he had played for and received the financial equivalent of room and board from a semi-professional baseball team in the East Carolina League, the Rocky Mount Railroaders. A humble and unfortunate precursor of his more notable physical accomplishments, Thorpe’s experience with Rocky Mount was at once to intensify his love of athletics and to initiate the first in a chain of events which would lead to personal and, perhaps, national tragedy. Amid a myriad of physical and personal accomplishments which, when considered in historical perspective, spotlight Thorpe as a uniquely gifted athlete, two remain paragons of athletic achievement. During the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm, Jim Thorpe became the first and only athlete to win both the pentathlon and the decathlon, an accomplishment which evidenced the full range of his athletic abilities and earned him the title of "The Greatest Athlete in the World," an honor which was to be reaffirmed 38 years later when the nation’s sports writers voted him the greatest athlete of the half century. Following his experience in the Olympics, Thorpe returned to Carlisle to have, perhaps, his greatest year in football, scoring an unprecedented 25 touchdowns and accumulating a total of 198 points in a single season.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame opened in Canton, Ohio, on Sept. 7, 1963, with the induction of 17 charter members. Canton was chosen as the site because it was there that National Football League was founded (as the American Professional Football Association) in 1920. The hall originally consisted of two buildings. A third was added in 1971, a fourth in 1978. In its 51,000 square feet of space, the hall of fame includes an area tracing the history of pro football, an art gallery, a room devoted to enshrinees and their teams, and many special exhibits. The hall of fame library contains many original documents, press clippings, books and magazines. Members are chosen by a 36-member panel comprising one media person from each of the 30 NFL cities, a representative of the Professional Football Writers Association, and five at-large voters. To be eligible, players must be retired for five years. A coach becomes eligible immediately upon retirement. Contributors can still be active. Induction takes place during Hall of Fame weekend, in late July or early August, which includes an NFL exhibition game at Canton's Fawcett Field.

King Gustav V of Sweden: "Sir, you are the greatest athlete in the world." Jim Thorpe (reportedly): "Thanks, king." Ninety-three years after this singular exchange July 15, 1912, at the closing ceremonies of the Stockholm Olympics, no athlete has emerged as Jim Thorpe's equal. Though the word hadn't been coined, he was a superstar in college football, a whiz at track and field, the NFL's first marquee player and a respectable major league outfielder. Thorpe, a full-blooded American Indian, was named the best male athlete of both the half-century and century. He is a member of the pro football and track and field halls of fame. A town was renamed for him (Jim Thorpe, Pa.) near where he starred in football for what then was known as the Carlisle Indian School. A movie starring Burt Lancaster was made of his life. The U.S. Postal Service issued a stamp bearing his likeness in 1998. The following year, the House of Representatives passed a resolution declaring him the greatest athlete of the century.

    Jim's Youth
    The Carlisle School:
Carlisle school was set up by Lt. Richard Henry Pratt of the U.S. Army as a way to help Indians integrate into the American culture. They hired Glenn S. "Pop" Warner as a football coach.
When Jim went there, in 1904, he was learning a trade as an electrician.
One day in the spring of 1907 Jim passes the athletic fields and watches the track team practicing the high jump. Jim's only 5'9" and 144lbs. He asks if he can try. So wearing a pair of overalls he clears the jump. The boys run and tell Pop Warner that Jim just broke the school record. Soon enough Jim's on the track team. That year Jim dominated the field at the PA Junior College Interscholastic meet in Harrisburg.
In fall Jim wanted to go out for the football team. Pop tried to discourage him, he was too small. "You're my most valuable trackman and I don't want you hurt playing football!" Jim kept bugging him until Pop gave in.
