2003 NFL Rookie Draft Reference Guide 2003 War Rooms: Those Who Decide Who Gets Drafted
by John Holler As important as who gets drafted each year during the NFL’s annual auction of collegiate talent is who is making the calls. If, for example, an owner has final say it could be a very different decision than that of a head coach with an offensive or defensive background. When the Panther hired former Giants defensive coordinator John Fox, it came as no surprise when he snagged Julius Peppers. For that same reason, new Bengals coach Marvin Lewis is being questioned about his certainty of taking QB Carson Palmer with the first pick of the draft or if he will look to trade down to stockpile more picks to get used on both sides of the ball. Each team has a different process of selecting players and the approach used goes a long way in determining how a team will use its picks and if it is willing to sit on the spot currently occupied, take a chance to move up or show a willingness to slide down in the draft for more picks. Here is the FF Mastermind list of who is watching the store for all 32 NFL teams and, when push comes to shove, who has the last word on making the selections for the future of their respective franchises.

Jim Souhan: Today's NFL has become great spectacle
Jim Souhan, Star Tribune July 27, 2005 In a couple of days, the Vikings will barnstorm toward Mankato, to visit a college campus the way the Huns visited Europe. Mankato has played host to the Vikings for 40 years now and, thankfully, the Burger King drive-through wall that Keith Millard ran into has fully recovered, although most patrons of the infamous Albatross bar probably have not. It was in the Albatross that I had my first conversations with Mike Tice, then an aspiring fifth-string tight end who would partake in a nightcap before beating it back to Gage Hall before the 11 p.m. curfew. That was always the most fascinating time at the 'Tross. Before 11, there would be a handful of players hanging out. At 11:05, after the players left, you'd see a handful of muscular young men emerging from the shadows, hoping the female clientele wouldn't know that the real players had a firm curfew and couldn't possibly still be at large.

The Vikings Timeline
Major news in Vikings History and other notable events.
The 80's
In 1981, however, the Vikings finished 7-9, their worst effort since 1967. But it paled in significance compared to the announcement that the Vikings were moving to an indoor stadium for the 1982 season. The old Met (Metropolitan Stadium) had been their home for all of their 21 years. It was at the Met that a young, inexperienced Vikings team became an NFL powerhouse, with the most feared home-field advantage in existence. But no longer would opponents cringe at the thought of playing the short-sleeved Vikings in subzero arctic conditions. "I'll miss that home-field advantage," Grant said wistfully. The Vikings christened the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome by qualifying for the playoffs. Burns had been with the Vikings through the Super Bowl years, starting in 1968 when Grant hired him. Burns invented the single-back style offense (to take advantage of Chuck Foreman's abilities), better known these days as the "West Coast Offense." Make no mistake, it was not Bill Walsh and the S.F. 49ers who invented it and used it so well in the 80's, it was Burns in the 70's that originated it and made it famous. He brought with him the respect he earned and deserved from the players. Since he played such a key role in helping the Vikings to four Super Bowls, they wanted to give him a fifth shot, this time as a winner.

Best Ever Draft Choice Round Table Mr. Cheer or Die's
Views on the Vikes from the Inaugural Hall of Fame fan. Save for a Rainy Day Main SHOUT OUT! Friday June 08, 2005 Best Ever Draft Choice Round Table We recently finished up voting in the Best Ever Vikings Draft Choice Tournament. I invited a few highly paid and sought after Vikings experts to look back at the results. 1. Did you agree with the selection of Fran Tarkenton as the best
ever Vikings draft selection? Piss Boy:
While Tarkenton was an amazing player, I don't think he really was the greatest draft choice the Vikings have ever made. The contest basically boiled down to a popularity contest. Was Tarkenton the most popular Viking ever, yes most likely. Philly Vike: I agree and disagree that Fran Tarkenton is the best ever draft selection. How can you argue with choosing one of the best ever NFL quarterbacks? After all, he passed a record 47000 yards only to be surpassed by Marino in the NFL. Imagine how high that record would have been if they had played in 16 games per year instead of 14, he would have had a record even Marino would not have beaten. After all, Tarkenton also was the QB who introduced the league to what a QB scramble really was. I still hear from people commenting on Tarkenton's ability to scramble. He was different than the guys like Vick or Cunningham, who take off with a wide open field. He scrambled to keep the play alive and get the pass down field. The argument against Tarkenton in my opinion is his performance in the post-season and not winning one of those Super bowls. The disagreement I have is that the winner should have been one of the Purple People Eaters, I don't even care which one of them. It is what the Vikings are known for, even ahead of Tarkenton the non-Viking fan will first comment on that defense. How can we as a group of Vikings faithful not vote in a player, any player from one of the greatest NFL defenses ever? Have we forgotten our roots and tradition now that we are in the humpty dome and our brains have started to over heat?

A History of Mira Costa High School Mustang Football “This history of Mira Costa Football was originally prepared in 2000 to celebrate the founding of the High School and its 50 Year Reunion. This history is ongoing and records the growth of the Mustang Spirit and Tradition that has resulted in a football program that demands respect in League and CIF play. All alumni, players and supporters, share in the growth of this tradition.”
Don Morrow
Head Coach
The 2004 Mustang Football season was different. It was unlike any season in recent years. Accustomed to winning often and having undefeated regular seasons, followed by CIF semi-final or final championship game appearances, the 2004 season fell short of these high expectations. While it was an off year in terms of a wins and losses it was an amazing year for this talented group of Mustangs as they overcame multiple challenges and adversity.
True to form, preseason polls had this team rated in the top 20 in the CIF Southern Section (consisting of more than 500 teams); it was favored to win its 5th straight Bay League title, and had not lost in 39 regular season games.
The schedule was tough – it began with a home game against North Torrance and a Mustang victory, 31-27. This was an outstanding effort considering that North Torrance completed the remainder of its regular season undefeated and eventually lost in the CIF Division X championship game. The following week, the Mustangs traveled to play Division 1, Orange County powerhouse, Esperanza. The Mira Costa boys played their opponents tough and a 14-14 half time score, but the Aztecs took advantage of some Mustang mistakes and dominated the second half for a 38-14 victory – it marked the first time that Mira Costa had lost a regular season game since 1999 – a span of 40 games. Esperanza went on to a successful season and lost a CIF Division I semi-final game.

Vikings vs. Buccaneers Recap
By Ted Glover Minnesota ’s loss to Tampa Bay was uglier than Phyllis Diller without makeup, truly a hideous thought. There were some bright spots, but they were few and far between, and there is a ways to go before the Vikings can be considered a legitimate Super Bowl contender. So with that in mind, let’s give out some grades. Quarterback: F. 5 turnovers, whether you were hurried in the pocket or not, is unacceptable. During the off-season, the team was transformed and Daunte Culpepper was anointed as the unquestioned leader. And with all the bad play that went on yesterday, Culpepper drove the team down the field and had them first and goal with just over two minutes to go. And Culpepper promptly threw an interception. Yes, it went through Moe Williams’ hands, but the ball was poorly thrown, high and outside, so there was dual culpability there.

Published By:
Sunday, April 24, 2005 PERMALINK:
NBA first-round playoff picks The first weekend of the NBA playoffs is more than half over and I still haven't put my virtual money or my mouth on the line as to who will advance past the first round. Thus, without getting into too many details (the round will be over if I start spouting; although I'll try to chime in here a few times later in the week), here is the thumbnail version of the way I see it shaking out, with cavaets included where current events have already overtaken my original "wisdom." Eastern Conference Heat over Nets in 4 The Nets have quite possibly the worst collection low post players in the league. The Heat have Shaq. And I still don't like Vince Carter. Pistons over Sixers in 5. Philly gets a game only as a means of respecting AI, the second-most valuable player in the NBA this year behind Shaq. A sweep wouldn't surprise me. Pacers over Celts in 6. Until yesterday's blowout, I had Indiana winning this in 5. Guess I'm still living in the past, where 'Toine Walker was a rally killer instead of franchise rescuer, and Paul Pierce always has to takeand missthe last shot. Seriously, although they enjoy a serious edge at point guard (Payton over Anthony Johnson), and better depth, I don't see the Celts overcoming deficiencies in the paint (even with Jermaine O'Neal's bum shoulder) or on the sidelines (Carlisle may be the league's best coach).
