The former NCAA heavyweight wrestling champion from Minnesota wants to win a spot on the defensive line. At 6-foot-3 and 286 pounds, the 27-year-old Lesnar has not played football since his senior year of high school in South Dakota. "He's very serious about this," said Lesnar's agent, Ed Hitchcock. "He worked out today and (coach) Mike Tice said he wanted to sign him." Lesnar retired from the WWE in March. In April, he sustained a pulled groin, bruised pelvis, broken jaw and broken left hand in a motorcycle accident. Lesnar tried out for the Vikings in June. He had another workout with them on July 27. After that workout a month ago, Lesnar said, "This isn't a publicity stunt."

Studwell has more say in college talent and Tice and Brzezinski, who also go on the road to scout talent this time of year, are more focused on pro players.

Nov. 7, 2004 our player. All the discussion is over with. PFW: Many GMs seem to concentrate on watching players who their scouts say fit their system, rather than looking at every player in the draft. But coming out of college, many players are still very flexible and can be molded easily. I understand there is a crunch for time and that no GM has the time to evaluate every player in the country, but is it narrow-minded to concentrate heavily on scheme fits? How do the Vikings approach it?
Corners and safeties and really everybody else across the board, with the exception maybe of a West Coast offense that is looking for a particular type of quarterback and may not have the big arm to throw the vertical routes and throw deep like we do. Then maybe we can give a little bit on that part of it. From our standpoint, we do not evaluate players based on schematics. We evaluate them based on abilities and projections and character and all the above.

For Lesnar, Life Goes On
By RONALD JORDAN
Media General News Service
Published: Jul 8, 2004
Brock Lesnar, the former WWE heavyweight champion, is proving that there is definitely life after wrestling, or at least there's a spotlight. For the 6-foot-3, 290-pound Lesnar, the latest media attention came on Monday when ESPN.com featured the former wrestler in its cover story. The in-depth article, titled ``Grappling With His Future,'' focused on Lesnar's departure from pro wrestling and his strong determination to play in the National Football League. ``While Steve McMichael (a former Chicago Bear), Bill Goldberg (the one-time Atlanta Falcon) and even Dwayne `The Rock' Johnson (who played at the University of Miami) used successful football careers to catapult them onto the professional wrestling stage, Lesnar is trying to do just the opposite,'' wrote ESPN staff writer Wayne Drehs. ``Lesnar, the former NCAA heavyweight wrestling champion and the World Wrestling Entertainment's youngest champion ever, walked away from a seven-year, $45-million contract (actually $9 million) in March. In part because he was fed up with his wrestling persona, 'The Next Big Thing.' In part because he was sick of the travel. But mostly because of his lifelong dream to play professional football.''

Minny controversy
Vikings at center of post-draft talks again
Posted: Monday April 28, 2003 3:48 PM
In my years covering the Vikings, I figured out a tried and true formula for discerning which way Minnesota was going to go on draft day. Whatever scenario created the biggest possible headline or plunged the team into controversy, that's what the Vikings were destined to do. From selecting a tumbling Randy Moss in 1998, to using their infamous "bonus" pick on Dimitrius Underwood in 1999 not to mention passing on Warren Sapp in favor of Derrick Alexander in 1995 the Vikings have been an organization that knows how to make news.

100 Greatest Players of All-Time
#6 Dick Butkus Dick Butkus, Linebacker/Center
Illinois, 1962-1964 Known more for his intensity and ferocity as a pro superstar, Dick Butkus began his legacy as the best linebacker to ever play college football. Everyone knows all about his hitting and meanness, but most don't remember just how fast he was in college with running back quickness making play after play after play. It wasn't just the 373 tackles he made in his career, it was the way he made the tackles as the most unblockable linebacker college football has ever seen. Butkus set the standard to which all other linebackers are measured with the Butkus Award going each year to the nation's best college football linebacker. The 1963 Illini: Following a miserable 2-7 season, the 1963 Illini shocked the Big Ten led by Butkus and the solid defense going 8-1-1 on the way to the Rose Bowl. With Butkus leading the defense and fullback Jim Grabowski the star on offense, the Illini beat Washington 17-7 to finish with a No. 3 AP ranking. The Illinois tradition: When you think of schools with a tradition of great linebackers and you'll instantly think of Penn State, maybe Alabama and possibly USC. Illinois can boast a group of linebackers as strong as any school led by Butkus, Ray Nitschke, Scott Studwell, Kevin Hardy, Dana Howard, Simeon Rice (who began at linebacker) and John Holecek.

Vikings vs. Buccaneers Recap by PFC Vikings Columnist Ted Glover
Minnesota ’s loss to Tampa Bay was uglier than Phyllis Diller without makeup, truly a hideous thought. There were some bright spots, but they were few and far between, and there is a ways to go before the Vikings can be considered a legitimate Super Bowl contender. So with that in mind, let’s give out some grades. Quarterback: F. 5 turnovers, whether you were hurried in the pocket or not, is unacceptable. During the off-season, the team was transformed and Daunte Culpepper was anointed as the unquestioned leader. And with all the bad play that went on yesterday, Culpepper drove the team down the field and had them first and goal with just over two minutes to go. And Culpepper promptly threw an interception.
